2008 MLB All Star Game, 7:00 PM CDT
In my opinion, the NL (starters at least) looks like a better team than the AL and I am predicting that the NL wins this All Star game.

AL starting lineup: 1: Ichiro Suzuki, RF, Mariners SP: Cliff Lee, Indians |
NL starting lineup: 1: Hanley Ramirez, SS, Marlins SP: Ben Sheets, Brewers |

Yes, Berkman is batting 3rd.
They released the line ups yesterday, I think. If you want to pull the line ups, they are on this page.
Watching the pregame parade...
Is this live? All the players pulling up.. cause if it is.. don’t they have a game to play? I just saw Derek Jeter in a full suit and I’m pretty sure he has to ground out in 40 minutes.
Pretty sure it was tape -delayed or whatever
While it was on, I was also looking at parade pics at the CBSSports.com gallery – it usually takes an hour or more before pics are released.
heh.
David Duchovny (big fan of his here) talks about how when he was young you could cut out the back of milk cartons to get free (discount?) tickets to Yankees games so he could never go unless he drank a lot of milk.
Sheryl Crow sings the national anthym...
While a stealth bomber flies overhead… cause.. stealth bombers are cool I guess. Then 4 Yankees Fall of Famers throw out the first pitches to the Yankees All-Stars and Manager Joe Girardi.
38 minutes since the All Star games “started” and it hasn’t actually started. :p
3 up, 3 down.
It’s like watching an Astros game!
Hanley Ramirez and Chase Utley both strike out.
Lance Berkman manages to put the ball in play. He flies out. If he had squared up a little bit more on the ball, that could have been a double.
Error on second baseman
It IS like watching an Astros game.

Ruled a hit?
I missed that. I’m cooking dinner. But what I saw was an all thumbs second baseman kickomg the ball around not a hit.
Oh well – Still looks like an Astros game.

and not inspiring either (except for Willie McCovey getting out of his wheelchair( (and I thought George Steinbrenner appearance was interesting)

Funny article on Ichiro's
annual pre-game speech at the All-star game. link. It seems like it might be a joke. :D
Soto, Soto, Soto...
Ichiro flies out.
Jeter bounces one to Utley, which bounces off his glove and into his face. He reaches.
Then Jeter steals a base and Soto almost throws it into centerfield.
...
...
Hamilton strikes out and A-Rod pops out in foul territory.
Soto catches that one, but he slips on a bat near the on deck circle and… well, he doesn’t drop the ball.
No score in top of the 2nd.
Pujols grounds out to third.
Chipper Jones gets a hit!
Holliday grounds out, but advances Chipper.
Bruan strikes out swinging.
Meh.
Ball girl in commercial
I’m gullible I know.
In a commercial a ball girl climbs a left field wall in foul territory to make a great catch.
Is that for real? Did it happen in a game? Was it staged by a stunt woman? was it just computer special effects?

Utley makes the worse ground out ever.
Slow bouncer to the first baseman. Right at the bag. Didn’t have to take his foot off the bag to catch the ball.

I wonder if Tejada will get to bat in the game?
I have this hope that Tejada’s pride is so affected by the All Star game that he will have a big hit and that will get his bat hot again for the second half of the season. I know you could come up with a scenario which is just the opposite…but I prefer to take the optimistic tack.
I'm surprised Zambrano didn't stomp around the mound after the hit.
Now Jeter shows why he is so good at the double play.
Berkman to lead off the 4th.
Against a fresh pitcher.
This guy should be worried. He has to come out and face Berkman, Pujols and Chipper.
keep talking about the Cubs and one of their fans will show up
He is currently being irritating at the sane BCB. He adamantly defends the mighty Cubs over at the Cards blog as well.
It’s like saying Beetlejuice three times.
Umps steal a double from Pujols
A close play (which replays show Pujols is safe) at second and Pujols is called out.
Berkman struck out
And Chipper grounded out, by the way.
by entropic soul on Jul 15, 2008 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions
Oh, he was safe?
didn’t even watch the replay
His foot was in there.
Which it happened, I thought he was out, though.. to the umpire’s credit. Only the replay showed him safe.

Berkman playing some nice ball over at first
Almost got Bradley on the bad throw and then got him with Ye Olde Swipe Tag
Nice thing about Berkman playing
Is that we get to see him a lot even when he’s not batting since he’s the first baseman.
:)
Fukudome and Soto
Fukudome looks absolutely silly striking out swinging and Soto strikes out on 3. These are some great guys you sent us, Cubs!!

Hmm..
No clear MVP front runners here.
Maybe Holliday. He did hit a home run. But then again, he popped out with 2 on. Berkman doesn’t have any hits, but he’s played some nice D and does have an RBI. Hanley Ramirez has been on twice and scored a run.
Each of them are probably finished for the night, i would assume.
They'd probably still
give it to an AL player.

so does the AL forfeit if they run out of pitchers?
they don’t have any pos. players left on the bench to throw out there as a scrub. it wouldn’t be fair to allow them to re-use a pitcher, and the pitchers probably wouldn’t be able to do it anyway.
so i gotta think this is Sherrill’s game unless it goes at least 2 more innings
I thought I heard them say that Carlos Guilllen
used in the 8th was the last pos. player on the AL bench.
maybe they send Kazmir to LF (assuming he’s the last pitcher) and shuffle the infield to get some pos. player to pitch.
The long boring pregame ceremonies

Speaking of Tejada
This game makes me think – earlier this season Tejada was running the team in the field. He seemingly controlled pitchers, fielders, everything. Astros were winning.
The last month he’s been nonentity , not only at the plate but in the field.
What happened to his leadership?
Astros fan for life
by Joe in Birmingham on Jul 16, 2008 12:02 AM CDT reply actions
harder to be a leader
when you suck at the plate.
But I haven’t noticed a significant change from his behavior in the field at least. He’s gone to the mound, yelled encouragement, etc.
I think that stuff is just overrated when you’re on a hot streak as a team.
Uggla totally out of it now

Even with the crap ending
Gotta admit it was a lot of fun watching
Some overall (randomly stated) impressions
I just returned from New York on vacation. It was wonderful—went to a Broadway show Saturday, Shea Sunday, Cooperstown Monday, and the ASG on Tuesday.
As someone who was there, I echo many of these sentiments. I thought the pre-game stuff dragged on forever. I did really enjoy seeing all the HOFers, but then, I had just gotten back from Cooperstown that morning (an amazing museum in a great little town) so it was almost like an extension of that part of my trip. I didn’t think Sheryl Crow was all that great, but the timing on the flyover was off so I couldn’t hear the last part of the song anyway. (Josh Groban was fantastic with God Bless America, though.) The in-park announcer was terrible, but apparently he is an older gentleman who’s been there for like 58 years or something. He probably does fine with players he is familiar with.
I asked the friend I was with about the short porch in right field, about why the Yankees don’t get grief about it (someone mentioned that here). Basically, she said because the Yankees are a historic franchise and the Astros are just lame (but she’s a Cardinals’ fan, so what do you expect). Stupid Yankees.
I thought Miggy looked like the Miggy of May (okay, maybe not quite May-strong at the plate, but overall a great game). Berkman looked decent too, so I felt like our players represented well (would not want to be a Marlins’ fan today).
As far as the fans in New York. . . I’m conflicted. I’m impressed with the emotion at each park-the fans really get in to it. Since I’m often the only one in my section at MMP yelling for the Astros (and I can’t tell you how often people look around to see who is cheering-I think they’d prefer that I shut up and “enjoy” the game), I was a little jealous, actually. It was really fun to go to a couple of games in which people actually seemed to know the players and care about the outcome, instead of just wanting to do the wave. On the other hand, I thought the constant booing of Red Sox All-Stars was just classless. I guess those stupid Yankees fans would have preferred to do without J. D. Drew’s homer, huh? Morons. And a couple of Yankees fans and a couple of Tampa Bay fans almost came to blows in my seating section. Could have done without that whole drama.
We ended up leaving during the bottom of the 12th, as it was nearing 1 a.m. local time. We were taking the subway, and knew it would be well over an hour before we got back to Brooklyn. As it turns out, it took two hours to get home. I felt like a loser to leave early, but I had to get up this morning to catch a flight home, and as it turned out, I would have hated to have seen the AL finally win, especially with Lidge on the mound. Dealing with those obnoxious Yankees fans after the win-and fighting with them to get on the subway-would not have been worth it.
Overall, one of the most wonderful vacations I’ve had in a long time. Now it’s time to catch up on some sleep!

It is comforting to know we do get the “feel’ for what’s going on wathhcing the game on the television or internet.
It sounds like a great vacation.
I think next year I’ll visit Cooperstown (or wait four more years to see Biggio and maybe Bagwell there)

Yeah
I can’t say enough good things about Cooperstown and the HOF. It’s an arduous drive from the city (and that’s saying alot, considering that down here we drive everywhere) but it’s absolutely postcard-perfect picturesque scenery and the town itself is a delight. The museum is amazing, although seeing as how there’s virtually NO Astros’ stuff in it (and none in the gift shop), I felt like a red-headed stepchild as a fan. We went to a brewery in the area, which was fantastic, and watched the Home Run Derby from a cute little cafe on Main Street. I think I want to go back in 2012 for the induction ceremony. Oh, and I’m a member of the HOF (get the magazine and whatnot) and that definitely came in handy, as there was a fairly long line to get in, and we got to go to the front of it.

Oh
And as far as leaving early—I know I’m a loser for that, but we got there when the gates opened at 5 p.m. and watched all of both batting practices and all the other on-field activities, so by the time we left we had been there almost 8 hours. It felt like enough (definitely got our money’s worth).
