St. Louis Cardinals at Houston Astros, Jun 7, 2008 6:05 PM CDT
I find it at least a little odd that the 2 players on the Astros that have typically played every day in the past unless hurt, have both been given days off in the last 2 games(Tejada yesterday and Lee today)... I know Tejada doesn't like sitting so I'm sure sitting for 2 games so far this season didn't make him really happy yesterday. I kind of thought that maybe Matsui would get a rest tonight since Loretta had such a nice game last night... but that didn't happen either.
As most of us seen coming with hearing Cooper's recent comments, Bourn is batting 7th tonight and Pence batting 1st. That's definitely a move int he right directly. Nice to see Erstad get another start today as well.

Lee has been struggling at the plate....
just like Tejada. So I assume Cooper believes that a rest might do both some good. I like Erstad in LF. He has been productive at the plate and he will provide some defense in LF that Lee doesn’t. In fact, this game has a damned good defensive outfield.
Chacon allows a lead offf singlel....but gets the next three.....
with 2 groundouts and a line out to CF by Pujols.
The Pujols line drive
scared me off the bat… It looked like it was hit much deeper than it was.
Go 'Stros!
Poo-holes and his smirk.
Someone should knocked him in the teeth for that. Seriously, not to hurt the man, but when is the last time one of our pitchers went high and in to him? He will continue to own us until he gets beat inside. How about a “brush-back” every now and then?
Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.
Not sure it would do much
There are some hitters that brushing them off the plate might be effective… I’m just not real sure how well that would work against Pujols…
Go 'Stros!
True
...plus Ausmus is way too scared to call it up and in. We’ll see next AB…
Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.
I had a feeling
an Ausmus jab was forthcoming..
So what do you think about Towles going down and Quintero coming up?
Go 'Stros!
over the years of watching the Astros pitch to Pujols...
it seems that part of their game plan is to pitch him inside underneath the wrists. he will swing and miss sometimes when it is well executed. but it’s also dangerous, and I’ve seen Pujol punish the Astros after a couple of swings and misses when ball drifts back toward the plate.
Command is always important...
but, changing locations in/out disrupts a hitter’s anticipation. Of course if you can’t locate then you lose. I have noticed in recent games Poo has been serving those outside pitches all over the outfield. Bust him in just to make him aware!

hehe
I actually heard someone call LaRussa a genius over the past week… and it was by someone that I generally feel is very smart when it comes to sports..
Go 'Stros!
Maybe his actions seem unothodox...
because he’s always drunk. Not that I have anything against being drunk, but let’s keep it off the streets. :p

If anyone is a fan of Josh Hamilton
He’s on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week.
Not sure if they sell these on the stands, though. ???
He's a beast
I’m not a fan of his, but you have to at least admire what he’s doing so far this year.
Go 'Stros!
Great.
That may as well be 5 since we are facing Wainwright.

anyone see where Erstad was
on the replay of Glaus’ HR? almost all the way to dead CF, just in case there was a carom off the wall.
El Caballo wouldn’t have been w/i 100 ft of that spot. that contract is going to suck for a long time.
Wise Men?
Does the “Wise Men” reference refer to ALL Astros bench and role players or only to three of them?

I think they used to include Cruz Jr....
but i don’t know if Abercrombie can carry that designation, at 28 years old.
Cardinals hitting Chacon hard this inning
That’s not good either.

Darin Erstad
Was an excellent off-season acquisition. He just made a nice easy catch on the left field foul line that I took for ganted would drop for a hit.

7-0 already on balls hit a long way

Maybe Coop is paying him back...
for pulling him early last time.

Wainwright with second hit.
And it seems like three Astros gloves touched the ball or came close to touching it.
Because you know...
Wainwright is just so good at everything.
He’s a baseball god.
by entropic soul on Jun 7, 2008 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions
that was a strategy
Matsui gave up on the ball, so Wainwright has to run the bases and get tired out. gotta think man
Bourn bunt single
pretty decent bunt, even if Glaus picks it clean, Bourn probably still ends up safe.
Go 'Stros!
we're in serious silver lining time now
but it was nice.
Bourn doesn’t seem to have the ability to deaden the ball when he bunts though. That one was better, but it still had a pretty good pace on it. And the few bunts I’ve seen him put down successfully have been pushed to third. gotta be able to drag it as well.
you're right
he did bunt it too hard, but it was in a good area… hell, with his speed, any bunt not foul is a decent bunt(pretty much)
Go 'Stros!
seemed like Glaus was playing in
but pretty far off the line, so the bunt’s position down the line meant he had to come both in and towards the 3b line. like you said orig though, it was a good bunt. glaus didn’t field it b/c he tried to pick it up w/ the bare hand and that was the only chance he would have had to throw him out. hopefully michael can build on that.
I benched Chacon today..
not because I wanted to,but I got in on the action too late and it was either Shawn Chacon pitching, or Andy Sonnanstine . Sonnanstine is 6-3, so you can see why I went with him.
Go 'Stros!
whoever has Zambrano is probably pissed
although I’m not sure how many of those 7 runs ended up being earned.
I happened to catch the inning during the Dodger-Cub game this afternoon where the Dodgers put up 5 against Zambrano. It was surreal to watch the action and seeing the Cubs fielders dropping outs and throwing the ball away and the whole time Tim McCarver was chattering away blithely. Hilarious.
hindsight good call.
It seems like that league is fairly competitive. My bro is Glenn Davis Mustache. Is there anything at stake for the winner?
Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.
I could throw a few little things in.
Make the prize a little bit better at least.

Tim Lincecum wears rainbow sandals...
According to an answer given to Sports Illustrated, they are his favorite pair of footwear.
........
I'll give you
Wesley Wright AND J.R. Towles!

when he’s not playing with the Giants. :p

Let’s have that seven more times this inning. :p

wainwright imploded in the last game he pitched
after the 6th i think. doubt we’re putting up 7 runs off him, but would be nice to rough him up.
there has been some criticism that LaRussa overworked wainwright....
a lot of consecutive game with 120-125 pitches. LaRussa’s tendency to leave Wainwright in too long came home to roost in that last game.
Now Wainwright leaves with some kind of finger injury…blister maybe?
one of those
even w/ the extreme closeup in HD the Astros broadcast gave us you couldn’t really tell.
I didn’t see a blister, but my medical degree from Guatemala got lost in the mail, so I can’t make official diagnosis just yet.
LaRussa strikes me as the kind of guy
that would break his pitcher’s finger if he couldn’t pitch anymore. I mean, not really, but he just seems like some bastard movie villian that would take things out on his own henchmen. :p

Mercy is for the weak. The enemy deserves no mercy!
Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.
i know
i just figured w/ the cards-cubs connection it was appropriate. i still didn’t care enough to lookup carry’s name to see if i spelled it right or not.
well?
7-1 in the 6th
man on 2nd, nobody out and a guy coming in cold from the Cardinals’ pen.
our situation has improved slightly
that's the kind of thing Rollins got benched for the other day
and to be honest, I’d halfway say Coop should pull him after this inning. I don’t know, that just pisses me off.
Wonder what Romero was doing?
Radio guys say LaRussa doesn't have a lot of friends.
No shit. He’s a former law student, a bastard manager and drinks and drives.
interesting idea
it means you’re burning at least 2 players (unless you do something crazy like sending Lee to LF after he hits, move Ausmus to 2B and put Erstad behind the plate—I think he might be our 3rd catcher). We already used Abercrombie, so we would be pretty depleted on the bench.
with the way Carlos is going, there’s not a lot of hope for something good, but probably more than Matsui.
what the hell, it would have been fun.
Yeah, it is burning two players....but the bases ARE loaded.
That could be the only chance to win this game.
talk about dodging a bullet
wonder if fat albert’s leg is bothering him. doesn’t seem quite himself yesterday and today.
would have been a sweet DP
helped by the fact that their sea turtle was going down the line
1B Ump was in a bad spot to make that call
if he had the full Casino setup
I’m pretty sure that Scott Rolen’s eyeballs would have been popped out by that vise a long time ago
Tejada Home run
Looks like it was caught by an old friend named Ralph who runs a softball league in the west houston area.
Go 'Stros!
ridiculous

wish i could put money on this
a HR to any part of the Crawford Boxes sparks instant whining from the Cards board about the dimensions of MMP
perez is tough
he’s warming up in the ‘pen
maybe he’ll be wild tonight. at least they had to use their pen.
Byrdak needs a band for his specs
They’ve fallen off several times. Is it ok to call him Nerdak?
Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.
oh my
it looked like it was off the end of the bat when he hit it. didn’t think it would go, but he made it close.
baseball is fun
what a scary ending to that inning.
tough to watch on TV, because you just assume it will be a HR when Erstad is up against the LF wall.
Bourn HR...err make it a double
Fan interference… looked like its still a home run. The fan definitely reached over, but missed it.. hit the top of the fence and went over.. s/b a home run… but no instant replay, so it’s a double.
Go 'Stros!
that guy should have been ejected for that stupid hat
they guy reached over, but missed it. should have been a HR.
so the moron cost us a run
That's the knock on Perez
tended to be wild.
if he gets past that, the Cards figure he’ll replace Isringhausen
Maybe we'll get a whole 0 runs again
Like last inning. :p

we've had a lot of wasted oppo's tonight
15 hits, only 4 runs. offense looking 20% less anemic, than our past road trip
carlos lee on deck to hit for pitcher, if Erstad reaches
Lee FB to CF on the first pitch
game over.
keeping up our cardinals pattern of the year. win the first, lose the next two. see if we can change that tomorrow.
Lohse v. ??? I don’t know for us
common theme tonight
those 3 after Flores came in the game, in the 7th? really hurt. also, not getting anything after Matsui’s AB w/ the bases loaded
LaRussa press conference....
on the Astros’ post game show. Cardinals showed such great character, blah, blah, blah…Astros just had a bunch of flukey hits, blah, blah blah.
Just wait until he ruins a family
because of his drinking and driving.
Fuck that dude.
No respect.
