Towles Sent to Round Rock

Towles demoted to AAA and Quintero recalled.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/5822062.html

The reason for the move is fairly obvious.  The only question is whom to call up as a replacement, Quintero or J.R. House.  Quintero is the safer replacement, since House's defensive ability at catcher is questionable.  Cooper says that Ausmus will be the primary starter over Quintero.  I know Quintero didn't have good hitting stats at Round Rock, but I'm kind of surprised that Quintero won't get more starts, given Ausmus' age and known offensive liability.

If Ausmus becomes the primary starter, then

(1) The other catcher won’t get much experience, so we learn little about how well that secondary catcher might fare currently on a day to day basis as a major leaguer, and (2) we are essentially back to the glory, I mean “gory”, days of the past few years ( Everett, Ausmus, pitcher) when we gave up a third of our offensive lineup to near automatic outs. This time it will be Ausmus, pitcher, Bourn, but the result will be the same – effectively we will throw away 3 innings per game of offensive potential.

The middle of our lineup is clearly better than a year ago, but there’s nothing like 3 likely outs in a row (4 if Ausmus can hit into a few timely double plays) to put the stop to a potential rally.

It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

i don't think the Astros are too concerned about

getting a good look at Quintero. i’m guessing this isn’t designed as a long-term move. i’m guessing they’re hoping Towles finds his stroke, gets some confidence, and they can bring him back up. if Towles continues to struggle, Ausmus is Ausmus, and Quintero excels in limited playing time, I’m sure they’ll reassess the distribution of playing time. as a short-term solution, they’re probably favoring the verteran catcher who has worked more with the pitchers and will be less of a transition.

man, i really hope Towles can have some success at RR and get his confidence back. what you’re saying is absolutely true. we’re just giving away outs at this point, and who knows what the solution with Bourn is.

Even though I don't like "cute" strategies

I’ve wondered if it would be better to bat Bourn 9th (a la Tony LaRussa). This would allow him to continue to play regularly, and if everyone else were simply moved up one slot, Berkman (in particular) would get a few more ABs every week. After the first time through the lineup, the Bourn, Matsui, Tejada, Berkman, etc. lineup would still be in place, but I think there would be less pressure on Bourn in the 9th spot.

i'm with you

but i seriously doubt Cooper would entertain some of the things that go along with that strategy, not the least of which is batting a position player in the 9th spot. Tejada isn’t a very prototypical 2-hole hitter, since he doesn’t take a lot of pitches, and probably isn’t a guy you ever want trying to bunt or give himself up for the leadoff runner. Cooper at times seems adamant about fitting players into roles in the lineup, but then again, he goes and leads off with Pence.

seems to me though, we start a lot of innings with Matsui anyways, why not start the 1st with him? every other time through the lineup, you’d get Bourn hitting in front of Matsui and your sluggers, but you’d guarrantee Berkman an AB in the 1st inning.

i dunno. i’ll be the first to admit that i’m not expert on managing a baseball team. i wish Bourn would just figure it out and end the discussion.

I suspect you are right.

I get the feeling that the Astros don’t view Quintero as a long term part of their plans. I doubt that they believe they need to see more from him to make up their mind on that point. And, in the past, it has been apparent that the Astros don’t like Quintero’s “pitcher handling” skills. So that is probably behind the decision to use Ausmus as the primary catcher.

I agree that if Quintero gets hot when he has the opportunities, he likely will get more starts. If Towles doesn’t look like he will get back to the majors before September (and who knows?), then I would hope that the Astros look at the possibility of trading for a catcher.

All im goign to say is FINALLY!!!

Thsi is a move that should have been done a while ago. Its nothing about productio, its all about making sure the Astros dont totally ruin the developement of this kid.

KC sent Butler down to do the same thing, get his swing back under control, and get his confidence back.

Go rake in minord for 3 to 6 weeks and come back fresh and with a greater appreciation on the MLB and goe on the have a good carreer

Just looking at the Astros, there are many other examples....

Adam Everett and Morgan Ensberg both had terrible hitting stats when they first came up in 2001or 2002 (can’t recall which year); they were sent down to AAA after a couple of months. When Everett and Ensberg returned the next year, they performed much better and became fixtures. Luke Scott bombed when he was given the starting assignment in 2005 and he was sent back to Round Rock. The next year he returned with a vengeance to the major league team. This kind of move is fairly normal for a rookie starter, and it doesn’t mean that the rookie won’t eventually figure things out.

I'm totally happy with this move

The ONLY thing I didn’t like about it is that Bourn wasn’t on the bus with him.

Since Bourn is still around

And they brought up Abercrombie don’t they now have 2 all speed no bat guys?
I am still hoping they talk to Lofton.
Towles did have three hits the other night. I think the trip down was good for him and can see him back in about 4 weeks. I don’t expect 2007 numbers from him but 250 BA, 330 OBP and 400 SLG and he will be around for a long time and make Astros fans very happy to have him.

My friends suggested I see someone about my baseball problem. So I made an appointment but just ended up helping the doctor with his fantasy team.

Yep

I’m not real happy we brough up Abercrombie, but there really isn’t much to choose from in the minors.

I wonder

What would Texas need for Taylor Teagarden?

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

think they see Teagarden as their future at C

not likely to part w/ him unless it’s a very very good offer. And while we may have a lot of pitching in our minors, none are high prospects like they would probably demand.

I wonder how their draft of Smoak will affect their current 1B/DH/C situation?

Texas would probably ask for allthe talent left on the farm for Teagarden

To many teams need young catching, and Teagardens high OBP and OPS as a catcher combined with his above average to GG quality defense, most likely price him out of the Astros range.
