Boston Red Sox at Houston Astros, 1:05 PM CDT
Boston Red Sox at Houston Astros, Jun 29, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
We got ourselves a rubber game!!! Pretty crazy game last night that ended with the Astros beating the Red Sox 11-10.
The Astros are sending Brian Moehler to the hill who has been a very pleasant surprise since joining the rotation. As a starter this season, Moehler has a 4-3 record with a 3.58 ERA over 9 games started. his k/bb ratio is 32/14 and his WHIP is 1.277. Not too bad for a guy who was basically just used for mop up duties for the better part of his Astros career.
A win today would be a great confidence builder for the Astros and would be the 3rd straight series win for the Astros. It would also be nice to take a series against last seasons champions, and the team with the most wins in baseball(50).

Lame steal
Come on, Tejada. You gotta fuckin tag the runner if you get the ball before he gets there.
That happens with the Astros
every time they are on the road too, though. Especially those smaller market teams.

having been to a Yankees game and a Red Sox game
(granted the Yankees won the game I was at), the Red Sox fans in the crowd were much more subdued, but damn there were a lot of them.

It was important to escape that first inning
I saw this as an important game for the Red Sox afer the game last night. A losstoday shows a crack in the wall I figurd they would come with all barrels blazing.
Shutting the Red Sox down in the first was critcal to the Astros chances today.

Pence strikes out looking...
ugh. He looked at a curve on the outside corner, and then looked at a 96 mph fastball at the same spot.
Pence strikes out on three pitches.
I know it’s Beckett.. but he probably would have done the same thing against anyone.
That's not fair....
Beckett took only 5 minutes to go through the 1st, while Moehler took 20 minutes. Hey, Moehler “time of possession” isn’t a good stat in baseball.
Hitting coach needs to swing a bat at Pence and Tejada
to teach them that swinging the bat all the time doesn’t always end well.

I was wondering why wasn’t Mark Loretta playing after thg ame he had last night and when Blum did nothing two games ago, then BOOM

Let's take Blum out
and put Newhan in . Blum already had his awesome at-bat this game! (just kidding)

I think JD said that
Even though Blum had an 0-4 night last time out, he had some good swings and wanted to get him back in soon… whatever that means.
Go 'Stros!
Yer swinging the bat really well, my boy.
Just stop missing the ball.

maybe he won't want to leave houston
and we can trade blum + loretta + matsui to the redsox. i think that’s a good trade, right? ;-)
They just showed
the best interleague records… they showed 8-10 teams and not one of them was from the NL

downside of miggy's move to 5
after his bad at bats the past month I’d gotten used to thinking, at least Berkman’s up next. but now I don’t have that to look forward to.
that being said, I have the feeling Tejada may be about to break out again. he’s been hitting in the low .200’s for a long time now and even if he’s old, he’s not that bad.
dude, seriously
Miggy is not hitting too well recently, but the guy still lines out more than anyone i’ve ever seen.
Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.
Maybe he's just cursed with exteremely bad luck.
by entropic soul on Jun 29, 2008 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions
bad luck may be part of the answer
miggy’s BAbip over the last 28 days is .200. For his career it’s .295, so some of his recent poor performance can probably be chalked up to some bad luck.
good job Puma
nice solid single up the middle. pile up those RBI’s.
JD said it was a change, same as he hit last night. Becket missed getting a glove on it by a hair.
1 run through 5.2 innings.
After the Red Sox scored 6 on friday and 10 on saturday, I think that’s pretty good.

i’m glad he’s pumped, but people are going to get pissed.

Brownie says Pedroia had some words after the K...
but unclear if he was talking to himself or mad at Astros’ reaction.
ballsy move by wiggy
good w/ 2 outs.
i heard brownie or JD say yest that Ellsbury’s arm isn’t particularly respected. He turned but the throw was several feet off the bag and he made it easily. A good throw would have got him by a mile.
Has Cooper started channeling LaRussa?
These games have been lasting a long time partly because Cooper has become switch-happy with bullpen pitchers. Reminds me of the excruciatingly long innings when LaRussa manages a close game.
i feel bad for JD
having to read stupid promos for sitcoms when the games are on my20.
also for Bill Brown when he had to talk about the Best Darn sports show.
Has Coop seen Villareal pitch?
I’m just wondering.. or did he just hear he was pretty good or something?
if Chacon
hadn’t been a bitch about the whole demotion ordeal, that probably would have been a good spot for him, and Villarreal probably wouldn’t be an Astro right now.
by littlevisigoth on Jun 30, 2008 10:39 AM CDT up reply actions
Seriously.
Do we not have anybody better than Villarreal in Round Rock or Corpus Christi?
Oscar’s starting to look more and more like extra warm-up time for the real reliever who comes in and cleans up his mistakes.
Why wasn’t Geary used???
Oh, previous game
He threw 23 pitches in the game the night before. I could see him not being used again so quickly.
Borkowski
probably has the best line of any reliever at RR. over 18.2 innings since his demotion, he has an ERA of 2.41, a WHIP of 1.07, and has yet to yield a home run. do we want him back in Houston? not so sure. Chad Paronto is probably the next best alternative. over 38.2 IP, his ERA is 3.03, WHIP is 1.34, K/BB is 42/9, and has only yielded one dinger. who knows how that would translate up at the MLB level, but it may be worth thinking about. Villareal’s 12 HR in 36.2 IP is beyond unacceptable.

Moerhler's ERA as a starter after today.
3.38
Not surprised. Said in Spring Training he should have been a starter instead of Sampson.
dammit, Bourn slowed down because he thought he was out
on a routine grounder, but Beckett dropped the ball and then Bourn speeded up but it was too late. That isn’t the first time that Bourn has done it on the run the 1st base. In fact, I think Cooper warned him about that earlier in the year.
Yeah...
Sampson should have come out there when Villareal did and picthed a couple.

David Aardsma
I was readin the chron.com (forget who.. Justice I think) and they said his father threw out the first pitch today and they would not let Aardsma catch it because he plays for another team.
yeah, Justice was really blasting that decision...
and McTaggert’s blog took some shots at the Astros’ front office over the same thing.
Memo to Tejada
You don’t HAVE to swing the bat every time the pitcher throws the ball. You can, like.. not swing if the ball looks like it might be too hard to hit.
I like foul balls
I am beginning to appreciate them as an offensive weapon.

Lopez at the Chron
is going to have something about that in his blog. It’s funny that he said it was “something in common with Baylor” or whatever, because at the time, I thought it looked like the sic ‘em bears thing. (Grew up in Waco.)
75% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. . . the other 25% by Michael Bourn
So
here’s what Ortiz had to say (and, apologies for giving the incorrect name previously). Anyway, not a whole lot more information.
75% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. . . the other 25% by Michael Bourn
the first part of that column is about Bourn...
failing to hustle on a ground single which the pitcher juggled and then getting booed. Ortiz said that the veterans talked to Bourn.
Lee said, ‘Don’t do that all the time,’” Bourn recalled.
What? As far as lack of hustle, how about doing it, like, never.
That's why earlier I wondered why
Mark Loretta did not start at second today.

I recall the trade from Florida where it was said by many he was a salary dump so Red Sox could get Beckett.
Now he’s in this third superb year with the Red Sox.

Yeah, I heard that on my car radio.
My immediate thought was: man, you are having a tough time when your home team-paid announcers call you that.
Great win
awesome that we managed to win this series. going into it, i was really more worried about whether or not we would get swept. i’m SOO glad the 5,000 or so (maybe more like 10,000 or more) Red Sox fans at the game yesterday had to go home with their World Champion team getting outshined. i know quite a few of them here and in Massachusettes, so i’m glad i have a series win in my pocket to shut their bandwagon jumping asses up (i know there are a lot of hard core, died in the wool, Red Sox fans out there, but none of the ones i know are).
as bleak as the season looked ten days ago, these last three series have been very reassuring. our next four series before the all-star break are all against teams with losing records (three of which are about where we are), so definitely very winnable, but three of them come on the road. it’d take a 9-4 record in that stretch to get us back above .500, but 8-5 would put us just a game under and is probably the bare minimum to be gunning for. i’m not saying that this is a playoff bound club right now, but we’re finally getting some consistently good starts out of three of our five rotation guys (i’d take 5-6 innings and 3 runs from Runelvys, if we can continue to get it). our bullpen isn’t ironclad by any means, but we’ve got 3-4 guys you can count on more often than not, so i feel okay about them. really, if our offense can just stay in a rythm and not go into any more long sustained droughts, i don’t see why we can’t get seriously into the wild card race.
anyway, it’s good to temper some of the anguish and desperation that we were all feeling for much of June. hopefully July will be a bounceback month for us. the schedule is pretty favorable for it.
Go Astros!
