Boston Red Sox at Houston Astros, Jun 27, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
Runelvys Hernandez(pronounced ROO-nell-vees) makes his first career National League start today after spending parts of 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006 in the Royals organization. While with the Royals, Hernandez earned a 5.38 ERA over 78 starts in which he struck out 231 batters while walking 177. Hernandez has a career 25-33 record as a major leage player. Hopefull this time out, Hernandez will be able to stop the long ball.
Hernandez does have 1 complete game shut out in his career in which he allowed 7 hits and a walk against the Blue Jays on 8/26/2006.

Technology is amazing
Crazy how about 20 seconds after a pitch is thrown, they can replay that pitch with the blue streaks to show you the path… amazing
Go 'Stros!
Good movement
on Matsuzaka’s stuff… His curveball looks like a fastball and then breaks into your knees(for left handers)
Go 'Stros!
Struck out the side??
I arrived in the second inning. Are you saying the Astros struck out three times in the first ?? That’s as bad as you can get!

Scenario:
A pitcher pitches a ball and it hits the ground then bounces behind the catcher and into the umpire’s pocket. The catcher can’t find the ball so a runner from third scores. Does the run count?
I saw it happen to the Astros last night
On one of those weirdest moments in sports shows. >:(

I Want the Dice K...
...that puts a ton of batters on base due to walks. The guy who showed up tonight is mostly either hitting the zone or getting batters to swing.
R.Hernandez Pitch Count Already High
I have a feeling he exits early and Sampson comes in for two to three innings of relief.
Somehow I don't see Sampson and the Red Sox...
mixing very well….

If this is going to come down to pitching
I don’t feel so good.
It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!
And you feel better if
it comes down to hitting?

Most simulations conclude batting order
doesn’t matter all that much, but conclude the best is in order of OBP, highest to lowest.
It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!
I personally
put little into the simulations…
But I want to give my best hitters the most chances… and it irks me to see a game end with a marginal batter hitting in the wrong spot in the order when you should have had a better hitter in that spot anyways.

Youklis' shiner
I actually seen it happen… was watching the Sox vs DBacks game and during warmups the 3rd basemen threw one low that popped up and got him in the eye.. instantly swole up(not completely shut.. but pretty swolen). He left the game.

Wikipedia'd Jim Deshais
Chris Berman nicknamed him Jim “Two Silhouettes on” Deshaies
In 2001, Deshaies ran a tongue-in-cheek campaign urging Baseball Writers Association of America voters to elect him to the Baseball Hall of Fame, even though he knew that he was not qualified for the honor. His goal was to get one vote in the Hall of Fame election, which succeeded when Houston Chronicle writer John Lopez voted for him.
His first full season was with the 1986 Houston Astros. Still considered a rookie that year, he posted 12 wins, good for the Astros rookie record. That record was later broken by Roy Oswalt in 2001.

The over/under in Vegas
for this game (after 4.5 innings) is 7.5 runs.
I’m thinking OVER.

Who will be fired first -
Hitting or pitching coach?
The hitting is more of a problem
relative to its potential than the pitching as been. As clack has noted on several occasions, this team was not constructed from the standpoint of OBP. Getting men on base is what scores runs. That’s the GM’s fault.
We knew the pitching was mediocre, and in reality, it’s been a touch better than that.
It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!
Yes
and one could also argue that the hitting coach could teach the batters some patience at the plate, a majr key to getting on base. Other than Berkman, we don’t really have any patient hitters.

Do you think the Astros would be selling out games
against the Yankees and Red Sox if both of those teams were in the NL?
Go 'Stros!
I think so
Houston is a large city, and only one tenth of one percent of the population is needed to sell out any game. Plus, the Red Sox and Yankees are big name teams with a large following, much like the Cubs and Cardinals.

Minute Maid Park is UGLY.
Really? If MMP is one thing… it’s for sure not ugly…

I lived in Boston
for a number of years, and I guarantee you that if Minute Maid is ugly, Fenway is a garbage dump. It has its charm for sure, and it’s very efficient – the walkways under the stand also serve as urinals – but pretty it ain’t!

Not the worst outing
Something along the lines of the mediocre one we expected.
Except unfortunately, Dice-K hasn’t walked enough guys yet.
The seating is very cramped
and there’s a disconnect between the various parts of the stands. If you enter the wrong gate, you can’t get to your seat.

didn’t strike me when coop did it, but is it really worth burning a player to move the pitcher’s spot down two places in the order? when you’re trailing by 4 runs?

big fly from abercrombie
i wish i had posted my thought before Abercrombie came up: “I predict a meaningless pinch hit HR right here.”
Nice Single by Tejada
Most places, that’s a home run… MMP has a shallow left field, but can rob some line drive homers due to the tall wall.
Go 'Stros!
But Cooper has told us that
HRs are rally killers, so a single was much better.

are we even worth papelbon right now?
don’t they have some scrubby reliever who hasn’t pitched in 10 days that just needs to get some work in?
Well if they use him tonight
maybe he won’t be available if they need him later in the series…..

It's not just you.
I’m starting to get nervous when I see him come in. Of course, with our bullpen, it’s probably just a Pavlovian response anyway.
I’m going to the game tonight, y’all (Saturday), and I scored a table at the 9 Amigos patio. Will be armed with a poster with my signature on it (the Bourn saying, that is), so maybe y’all will see me. (I feel like I’m 12—’hey, I might be on TV!’)
75% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. . . the other 25% by Michael Bourn
well, not great lately....
His ERA hasn’t been a good measure, because most of his bad work has resulted from inherited runners scoring. His ERA over the last 10 games is 3.25, which isn’t bad. But he also has 3 losses and 1 blown save over the last 10 games. In the last 5 games, he has only 2 clean appearances (no hits or walks) and in each of those two appearances he faced only one batter.
