Houston Astros at Tampa Bay Rays, Jun 22, 2008 12:40 PM CDT
This doesn't look like a good match up for the Astros. Brandon Backe takes the hill against one of the best pitchers in the game in Scott Kazmir. Kazmir's numbers are very good with just over a 3/1 K/BB ratio and allowing just over 1 base runner per inning on average. Backe on the other hand is struggling this year and has lost twice as many games as he has won. Backe looks great some games, but then terrible in others. He needs to become consistent if he wants to stay in a big league rotation.
So the bullpen blew another win chance for the Astros last night... that seems to be kind of a running similarity in many of the recent games. But, the games can't be blamed solely on the bullpen. The Astros just aren't scoring enough runs. We knew when we came into this season that in order to win games, we were going to need to score runs... lots of them. That's just not happening. In the last 8 games, the Astros have scored 5 runs twice. Not once have the scored more than 5. The only way you can win ball games by scoring just 5 runs a game is if your pitching staff is very good... ours isn't... so go score some runs!

Make that.. Astros down 2-0 as Backe walks the first batter and then gives up a 2 run shot to Longoria..

Wow.. Tampa crowd sux..
It’s a sunday game and your team could possibly be in 1st place in your division by the end of the day, and there are as many open seat as filled seats…

Chacon has been moved to the bullpen....
and R. Hernandez called up to start against Boston. Chacon was pissed (based on his quotes in the newspaper). I’m not so sure that Backe wasn’t a better candidate to be moved out of the rotation. However, you can make a case for everybody in the 3-4-5 slots being moved into the bullpen.
Seems quite pissed..
Sure anyone would be.. but so openly? Calling th emove horseshit. ha. Maybe if he pitches in the bullpen we can get someone who can do something other than Geary.

I don't agree or disagree with the move
if you were going to move a starter, Chacon has the worst stats as a starter.

Yeah, I understand the move...
Both Backe and Chacon have been similarly inconistent, but I probably would have leaned toward taking Backe out of the rotation because Chacon’s stuff seems better and Chacon has had more quality starts. However, Backe has worse history as a relief pitcher, and Chacon has been pretty good as a reliever over his career…so that could be the pivotal point for that decision.
Good throw by Pence...and Rays' third base coach is auditioning for a similar...
role with Astros. :)
Pence seems to like the low stuff
I’m just going off of memory… but it seems like he hits quite a few home runs on pitches at his knees or just under.

another Jason Lane?
Lane was famous (at least to JD) for feasting on low balls. I recall Deshais saying in the Yankees series that the Astros mght need Lane back to hit against a sinker pitcher like Wang.
Interesting news that the Astros short season Penn League team
(which exists mostly for high school draftees) had a 3 pitcher no hittter. Generally pitchers in the league are going to be limited in the innings they pitch (given that they just finished high school or college seasons). I recall reading that the North Carolina high school pitcher signed in the supplemental first round pitched 2 or 3 shutout innings in his pro debut. Jay Austin, the athletic high school outfielder drafted early by the Astros, reportedly has looked good, especially on defense. The Arizona outfielder (forgot his name) just out of the College WS playoffs also has played well. Good signs perhaps for the Astros draft.
The Austtin newspaper also had a tidbit I didn't see in the Houston papers...
a local kid (can’t recall name again) drafted in later rounds by Astros signed. He is a LHP who led his HS to the district 4A championship (Lake Travis H.S., I think) wth somethng like a 9-1 record. His high school coach said he threw 93/94 regularly durring the season, whch is mighty good for a lefthander. Nice to see the Astros signing kids in the Austin/hill country area. There are a lot of good baseball players around this area, and suspect most of them have seen the classy minor league facilities in Round Rock. For some reason it seemed like the Reds and Braves were signing the local players in the past.
3-2 thanks to Carlos Lee
Homerun to left.
Kasmir taken out of the game. He can lose but not win this one.

Nice game by Backe
Gave up the 2 run dinger in the 2nd, but since then he’s been good.
7.2 IP with 2 earned(hoping that Wright can strand those 2 runners on base).
Go 'Stros!
This ump doesn't give much on the outside corner
I seen Backe hit what appeared to be the corner multiple times today and now Wright comes in and also isn’t getting the call.
Go 'Stros!
Kaz Matsui left the game
a few innings back with a strained tendon

I have a bad feeling about letting tthi scoring opporttunity go....
Lee popped with 2 men on base; earlier he hit a grounder past third just foul, which would have scored 2 if fair.
This 1 run lead is too tenuous.
Coope has little faith in his pitches
Wright comes in, gives up a walk and leaves and then Sampson forces a DP and then walks a batter and then gets pulled as well… I can see pulling Wright if you don’t like the lefty match up.. but pulling Sampson for Brocail is a little… odd

it worked...but it was a very odd move, and Coop would have been second guessed...
if Floyd had gotten an extra base hit. Cooper views Brocail as a virtual LHP, but that is based on his splits last year. His splits this year indicates that LHB hit him harder than RHB.
Wheeler showing why he turned out to be a good acquistion for
the Rays…I said that atter the Blum strike out, but now Q gets a hit and Wheels will leave. Bourn agaiinst a LHP….ugh!!!! Maybe he should bunt.
miller was very good against LHB for the Astros...
and putting a deceptive lefty like Miller against Bourn is like takiing candy frrom a baby.

Bourn, tough fly ball
Should have been easy, but he lost it in the roof… he mutters something to Erstad that looked like it could have been “I hate this place”

Game over!!!
We won a series!! YAYAYYAYAYAY!!!
JD said this was the first time anyone had won a series in Tampa since April.. that’s pretty stout.
Go 'Stros!
and if Brocail had done his job...
the Astros would have swept the series, which would have been a big boost.
Astros win 3-2
Backe is the winner
