Houston Astros at Tampa Bay Rays, Jun 20, 2008 6:10 PM CDT
Astros have lost 8 straight. The team record for straight losses is 11. I'm going to be positive and say the drought ends here.

Astros quickly up 2-0
After the 1st 1/2 inning of the game. Unfortunately with 1 out in the 2nd, there are runners on 1st and 2nd with the Rays getting back a run of their own.
Go 'Stros!
Odd beginning to this game, don't you think.
Oswalt falters a bit after he is given a quick lead. But at least he got a K to keep things from getting out of hand. I always worry when Floyd is batting against Roy, not because of their heated exchanges, but because Floyd always seems to hit Oswalt hard.
Jerry Hunsicker; Jim Hickey
How much of the Rays’ success this year can be traced to these two guys?

Sean Berry coaching 3d base, because Romero was injured by Tejada's foul
ball yesterday. Maybe Berry can get a closer look at his hitter’s swings from that location. ;)
Astros run into another out...Tejada at 2d.
Not opposed to the aggressiveness, but Upton looked to be in good position when he got to the ball, which makes me question the judgement.
*bang* *bang* *bang*
My head beating the desk. Pence caught stealing at second, by a mile according to announcers, on a slow reaction from catcher.
I think his slide was in reaction to how much the throw beat him
something like shock. not sure if it was a blown hit & run, bad jump, what, but it wasn’t even close to being close.
How would you feel
if the Rays won a World Series before we did… the Rays, the team that had never lost more than 90 games since they became a MLB team(10 years)
Go 'Stros!
Well
I figure that if they can top the Yankees and Red Sox to make it out of their division, and then fend off the rest of the AL to make it to the big show, ...
Then they may deserve it.
That’s not to say how deeply disappointed I am at how many bites at the apple we have had but failed to deliver.
i think I would be OK
I was just thinking what an impressive team they’ve managed to build, from being so terrible all those years. but even w/ all the young talent, they’ve got a huge mountain to climb. they’re so new I don’t have any feeling at all about them as a franchise/competitor, so I don’t think it would bother me.
besides, if having the Rays win would devastate you, then you must have been devasted twice already w/ the marlins winning 2 times, so what’s one more time gonna hurt.
marlins were kind've a joke
after they had the fire sale following the first WS win, but i see your point
I wonder how many fans are making note of the date to meet Villareal at the
Whataburger? I don’t want to be mean, but with the way Villaareal has pitched, it’s hard to believe he has a lot of fans.
anecdotally
he’s seems to have been hitting relatively more line drives. that plus improvements on bunting he’s shown should equal more success at the plate.
never seen matsui hit one like that
thought it was a fly out to the alley.
bourn is fun to watch on plays like that.
OT: Any Houston folks ever listen to David Pinto on the radio
http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/027345.php
He writes the Baseball Musings blog, which is useful for news, although he doesn’t really do that much in-depth analysis. Anyone have any reviews of him? Apparently he does a weekly spot.
I’ll be making my weekly guest appearance on Sports Radio 610 in Houston, the Nigh Shift, at 7:20 PM EDT, 6:20 PM CDT.
I like Pinto but haven't listened to him on the radio.
He makes some good observations…definitely a fan of baseballmusings. He is also a nice guy; I have emailed him several times with questions and he also responds promptly with a helpful reply.
I've heard him briefly once or twice
I listen to the Night Shift more when the Rockets are playing because they seem more like NBA folk especially when Matt was still on at that time.
I liked the way he was honest a week or so ago when I heard him say that no he did not think it was obvious that the Cubs would be as good as they are – they’re getting great years from key position players, relief pitchers etc.
See, Bourn doesn't have to steal all the time...
When he is on 1st, a double becomes an almost automatic run with his speed.
They said Ozzie Guillen talked about the size of the rats....
in the batting cage at this stadium. I have heard that the bowels of Astrodome had some big rats too.
I have no personal knowledge
but I gotta believe every big sports stadium/concert venue etc is a pretty welcoming breeding ground for vermin of all kinds. I’ve never been in any kind of facility like that that ever seemed clean.
I criticize Wiggy's D so much...
that I have to give him credit for a nice play charging the ball and throwing on the run.
yep
was a nice play.
Wiggy looks sharp some times… but then other times he looks terrible..
Go 'Stros!
don't remember him ever having a problem coming in the ball
it’s the lateral stuff where he has trouble
Tell me about it
Although I am a bit partial to the toaster sandwiches at Sonic.
You should check it out, along with the half-off happy hour slushes.
Sonic
They’re not the greasy hamburger + tater tot joint they used to be when I was growing up.
They’ve really dialed it up a bit within the past few years.
man, this is all making me hungry.....
unfortunately Wendy’s is the closest fast food joint to me, and I’m not wild about their burgers, but I may have to get something to eat.:)
Curt Schilling a HOF'er?
he had some great peak seasons and he got a lot of notoriety for post-season stuff, but I don’t think he was good long enough.
I put him in the Hall of the Very Good.
He was consistently very good for a long time….but was he HOF great? I don’t think so. Never won CYA, but came in 2d several times. Never led league in any major pitching stat, except BB/K ratio…but he was 2d a lot of times. He had many years of very good ERA+, but none of the years were among the historically great peak seasons.
was going to make a comment
about a certain pitcher being in the rocking chair, but to avoid any possible jinxes I will refrain
Guillen on Rays
Guillen’s lone shock was that Cubs manager Lou Piniella stayed relatively calm during his postgame chat, unlike Guillen’s terse exit interview leaving Florida.“He wanted to erupt, but he couldn’t,” said Guillen, smiling. “It was a different conversation with Piniella then mine when we left Tampa. It was less flavor.
“At least we aren’t the only one who played really bad, but Tampa has a great ballclub. They can beat you in so many ways. They are underrated, and when they play at home, they are dangerous.”
You can drop that El Burro

drat. double w/ an error allowing him to advance to 3rd
nice hustle from Carlos though, at least once he got past 1B. Can’t say he was really busting his ass down the line until he saw Hinske boot it. I think JD and Brownie were right; if Hinske doesn’t take his eye off the ball, El Burro probably is more than happy to settle for a single.
tough way for Roy to give up a run
bunt hit, groundball to advance the runner and then w/ 2 outs a pop fly bloop hit that Bourn misses by inches

I still think that Valverde
should be banned from strutting like a badass when he gives up runs…
