Houston Astros at Baltimore Orioles, Jun 17, 2008 6:05 PM CDT
Bourn back in the 1 hole... I guess his 7 hits in his last 19 AB's did that. I would have put Erstad at 1st if they are going to DH Lance instead of Blum. I'm assuming Berkman is DH'ing because of his calf... otherwise I see NO reason to DH Lance. He's already mentioned that he doesn't like being the DH and Carlos Lee is a much better option at DH(due to his defensive flaws).
Astros have lost 14 of their last 17. Hopefully the trip to the Baltimore is good for them.

My initial reaction was the same that Erstad at 1st base...
is better than Blum. But now I see that Olson is a lefty, and that explains why Blum starts over Erstad. Not that I think Blum is that great a hitter against lefties. Loretta would have been a better choice at 1st base, IMO. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong by a Blum HR.
It sounds good an all
given the fact that Blum is a switch hitter, therefore theoretically, he should be better against a LH Pitcher than a Erstad(a left handed batter) would be… but look at the stats.. Blum’s average is .10 higher over the last 3 years.. not much to write home about

JD's Scouting report on Olson
Says he’s easy to run against.. odd for a lefty(which JD also mentions)

Yay 1-0 lead
I’m assuming Bourn stole at least 1 base? I missed all but the last pitch of the Matsui at bat with my son.

Lee Pops out to end the inning
Berkman seems to be running okay, on the pop up he made it about 3/4 to 3rd before the SS caught it.

pretty thin crowd in B-more tonight
I’m curious how long the goodwill will last for Houston fans. We haven’t had a good season since the world series year, yet the team is still drawing well. Part of that is probably due to the fact that one mistake Drayton hasn’t made (and he’s made plenty) is to jettison popular players like Oswalt, Berkman or Pence. That plus the Biggio tribute season last year have kept the numbers up.
But it can’t last forever. I imagine most people on this board are die hard enough to keep going to games regardless of whether the home team is winning or not, but that’s not the vast majority of fans (I’m not blaming them for that). I hope we can get back to winning before the fans drift away, but it’s going to be hard to do in the next couple of years unless something drastic happens.
Yea, and unfortunately
the typical Houston area sports fan isn’t as “fanatical” about their sports teams as many other sports cities…
Go 'Stros!
I tend to discount the idea that one fan base
is more fanatical, better fans, less fair-weather, etc.
it’s mostly anecdotal evidence, with little attempt to control for other factors that might influence said sentiment (diversity of entertainment in the area, history of success, size of metro area, etc)
Single.
See, it worked. .. Oh wait.. he isn’t on our team anymore. :p

JD - "even though Quintero doesn't run well"
I’d like to hear an announcer just say, “is as slow as Christmas”
Geoff Blum just made us
wish Lance Berkman was at first tonight.

Blum has little recent experience fielding 1st base.
And that makes me question Cooper’s decision to start him at 1st base even more (I wasn’t aware of that when I posted earlier). Blum had 1 inning at 1st base earlier in the season, one game at 1st base for San Diego last year, and no time at 1st base in 06. The last time he had any significant time at 1st base was in 2005 with the White Sox. A guy who is that rusty fielding 1st base is more likely to make a defensive mistake. Erstad or Loretta would have been better possibilities for 1st base.

oh my goodness
MBourn gets a hit in a RBI situation. that’s amazing.
might have been out if the catcher manages to catch the ball.
3-2 birdies
Well, he is the best hitter on the team this month.

actually, it's probably a very tiny gun
Luke, no longer bothering to carry a concealed weapon and now it just going armed at all times. I approve.
meh
I think the Astros already have enough non-baseball related attractions in MMP… I mean we have cows swinging on our foul poles..

and boy do we have enough stupid contests between innings?
people winning ridiculous crap right and left.
way to go matsui
eventually i’m going to have to stop being sarcastic about this “rally”. 3 runs on 4 hits.
Soon... very soon.
This lull is driving us nuts… stir crazy even

Something like that
The team just finished with OTAs – They need to get the down from 84 to 80 by the start of camp. Roster cut speculation is fueling most of the boards right now.

Contract figures still to come
I’ve been one of the only in the texancentric blogosphere who has openly expressed his doubts about Colvin… It has shades of Green all over it.
Most are fat and happy with the thought. Meh. He’s 31 and coming off an injury.
I just hope we didn’t break the bank. Still waiting on those contract figures.

they just started playing the P.I.M.P song
in the background when Berkman was coming up to the plate. not sure why, but I can’t imagine a song and a player more ill-suited to one another.

Anyone else listening to the radio?
Dolan and Raymond sound like they hit the pub before the game. Very liberal with their coverage of the game. Banter is more “lively” than normal.

Would be nice if he'd
turn this par season into something worth the 100 million we’re paying him.
Go 'Stros!
I'd like him to jack up his stats in the next month
so we can fool some AL team into trading for him.
if he jacks up his stats
the Astros could move back into contention(assuming the Cubs actually lose some games)
Go 'Stros!
that contract is going to be an anchor around our necks for the next 4 years
I’d gladly swap a tenuous chance at the postseason this year to get our from under it dollar-wise and free up the position for someone else.
besides, it’s not just the Cubs who have to lose. The Brewers may not be entirely for real, but they’re better than us and while I continue to doubt the Cardinals, they have a huge cushion on us right now.

was around when Kent Hrbek was still playing? JD was just talking about players who hit the ball off the warehouse in BP. I’m old.
now JD and Brownie are talking about the rent on Monopoly properties. Talk about delirium
Sorry if this was covered
Buy why isn’t Carlos DHing? I would figure that Lance would be better at first than Geoff… Would be nice to have Darin in the lineup. Or am I off base?
Got Texans? Visit BattleRedBlog.com for the latest on your Houston Texans!
possibly Lance's leg/shin injury
can’t remember if I’ve heard the official explanation. that’s what Coop gave as the reason for sitting Berkman in Sunday’s game.
also, we’re all still pretending that Lee can play LF, so DH’ing him for all the AL games would be acknowledging the elephant in the room.
I see I see.
Thanks for the insight.

How short do you all think Coop's leash is getting?

I think he will finish the year
unless there is more open player revolt than some of the mutterings that have gone on this year. I can’t see Drayton firing him after less than a year on the job.
Objectively, it doesn’t make that much difference. He hasn’t done really well as a manager, but the team isn’t built to contend.
Scott is having the type of year
many of us thought he could have with a full time starters job…
Go 'Stros!
Man - he showed flashes didn't he.
Too bad he couldn’t nail down that OF slot. He always seemed a day late and a dollar short. Just look at that epic 18 (?) inning playoff game with the Braves… I remember he just missed ending that one with a line shot that went just foul.

bring in Marlo
They said Roberts was hitting 30 points higher vs lefties
But Coop went with conventional wisdom and called for Byrdak.

in his career, he's much better as a left-handed batter
this year he’s better from the right side. lies, damn lies and statistics
Hunter Pence has been quiet at the plate
But made a nice catch in right to end that threat.

WTF!!!!! Brocaill gets tossed ....oh, maybe not. But he really overreacts
to getting squeezed by ump.
I'm guessing
I think the ump THOUGHT Brocail said some kind of “magic words” and Quintero managed to convince the ump that he heard him wrong, or something. B/c looking at it again, it really did look like the ump walked out there and tossed him.
Brocail gets strike out and he raises fists in air, but ump didn't give it to him....
immediately….had to wait for calll on swing by 1st base ump.
We've been getting nailed a lot lately...

yeah, wonder where you could find stats
that show our CS % throughout the season. it’s taken a beating lately.
rare walk for Hunter
on a close pitch. lots of close pitches on the outside corner in the last few batters.
and the bleeding continues
astros have a 5 run night. should be enough offense, but brocail/valverde breakdown and we find another way to lose (gave away another out on the bases tonight too).
Six straight llosses for Astros.
I don’t know anyway tto sugar coat this loss, or the Astros’ play in general.
Did they really play that bad?
This felt like a win and then Valverde gave up that double to Mora. It was a great at bat. Oh well.
