Bourn back in the 1 hole... I guess his 7 hits in his last 19 AB's did that.  I would have put Erstad at 1st if they are going to DH Lance instead of Blum.  I'm assuming Berkman is DH'ing because of his calf... otherwise I see NO reason to DH Lance. He's already mentioned that he doesn't like being the DH and Carlos Lee is a much better option at DH(due to his defensive flaws).

Astros have lost 14 of their last 17.  Hopefully the trip to the Baltimore is good for them.

My initial reaction was the same that Erstad at 1st base...

is better than Blum. But now I see that Olson is a lefty, and that explains why Blum starts over Erstad. Not that I think Blum is that great a hitter against lefties. Loretta would have been a better choice at 1st base, IMO. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong by a Blum HR.

by clack on Jun 17, 2008 5:29 PM CDT reply actions

It sounds good an all

given the fact that Blum is a switch hitter, therefore theoretically, he should be better against a LH Pitcher than a Erstad(a left handed batter) would be… but look at the stats.. Blum’s average is .10 higher over the last 3 years.. not much to write home about

pretty thin crowd in B-more tonight

I’m curious how long the goodwill will last for Houston fans. We haven’t had a good season since the world series year, yet the team is still drawing well. Part of that is probably due to the fact that one mistake Drayton hasn’t made (and he’s made plenty) is to jettison popular players like Oswalt, Berkman or Pence. That plus the Biggio tribute season last year have kept the numbers up.

But it can’t last forever. I imagine most people on this board are die hard enough to keep going to games regardless of whether the home team is winning or not, but that’s not the vast majority of fans (I’m not blaming them for that). I hope we can get back to winning before the fans drift away, but it’s going to be hard to do in the next couple of years unless something drastic happens.

Yea, and unfortunately

the typical Houston area sports fan isn’t as “fanatical” about their sports teams as many other sports cities…

I tend to discount the idea that one fan base

is more fanatical, better fans, less fair-weather, etc.

it’s mostly anecdotal evidence, with little attempt to control for other factors that might influence said sentiment (diversity of entertainment in the area, history of success, size of metro area, etc)

Blum has little recent experience fielding 1st base.

And that makes me question Cooper’s decision to start him at 1st base even more (I wasn’t aware of that when I posted earlier). Blum had 1 inning at 1st base earlier in the season, one game at 1st base for San Diego last year, and no time at 1st base in 06. The last time he had any significant time at 1st base was in 2005 with the White Sox. A guy who is that rusty fielding 1st base is more likely to make a defensive mistake. Erstad or Loretta would have been better possibilities for 1st base.

I’d gladly swap a tenuous chance at the postseason this year to get our from under it dollar-wise and free up the position for someone else.

besides, it’s not just the Cubs who have to lose. The Brewers may not be entirely for real, but they’re better than us and while I continue to doubt the Cardinals, they have a huge cushion on us right now.

can’t remember if I’ve heard the official explanation. that’s what Coop gave as the reason for sitting Berkman in Sunday’s game.

also, we’re all still pretending that Lee can play LF, so DH’ing him for all the AL games would be acknowledging the elephant in the room.

unless there is more open player revolt than some of the mutterings that have gone on this year. I can’t see Drayton firing him after less than a year on the job.

Objectively, it doesn’t make that much difference. He hasn’t done really well as a manager, but the team isn’t built to contend.
