Change we can believe in:Cecil Cooper,Obama's VP candidate!
After this weekend's sweep by the Yankees against the Astros,I think Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama has just picked his vice-presidential candidate.
Houston Astros manager Cecil Cooper.
What Cooper's Astros did last weekend (especially yesterday against the Yanks) would be just like what we will be getting from Obama once he gets elected. Like the Astros offense yesterday,Obama does not have any experience. Like the Astros' defense and pitching,Obama does not have any experience. Like Cecil Cooper,Obama does not have any experience! So,Mr. McLane,I think you should hire Nolan Ryan,Hal Lanier,Larry Dierker,Jimy Williams or Phil Garner as your new manager, and tell Coop to hit the road. And in a few days,I believe Cecil Cooper will be Barack Obama's vice-presidential candidate. Then on Election Day,watch Obama and Cooper get the fewest votes in history and they will have 0 electoral votes, just like what the Astros scored yesterday against New York. Coop, why don't you be Obama's running mate? Now that's change Astros fans can believe in!

heh
I’ll agree that I don’t think Cooper is the best manager and I’ve called for his head multiple times in the past…

Very clever!
At last – something about Cooper that we can smile about!

Hey, as an Obama supporter, I don't appreciate bringing politics here.

Same here.
Respectfully, I come here to commune (and commiserate!) with fellow Astros fans, not argue politics.

As an undecided voter
I don’t come here either to discuss politics and I’m not going to get involved in such a discussion, but I’m sure not going to become a member of the “Easily Offended”. You don’t have to reply or respond to anything you disagree with, just leave it alone.
If the rule is ONLY to discuss the Astros here, then that should be made clear and there are at least two recent other posts that you should have complained about:
Happy Father’s Day
LA Lakers vs Boston Celtics
As long as something is not patently offensive or obscene, I lean in the direction of freedom of speech.

I'm not telling anyone what to say (nor do I have a right to)....
but this is a community centered around baseball, and if you bring politics into the discussion, it changes the interactions among the fans here. While I have strongly held political opinions, I refrain from saying much of anything about politics when I post on baseball web sites, because I don’t want political differences to color people’s perceptions about what I might have to say about baseball. In the three or four years I have posted on baseball web sites, this is the first time I can recall even mentioning anything about my poliitcal opinions.

also, my experience is that once you open the door....
to discussing politics, it leads to lengthy threads devoted to back and forth political arguments, which is fine for boards devoted to those kind of issues, but it can be something that keeps away people who want to talk baseball. Some issues like religion and politics can be very emotional and can leave some people feeling angry (which I was when I read the original post); and a lot of people would prefer baseball to be a form of escapism, instead of getting irritated with others or diving into an argument over serious matters.

Since at least six of us have said that we won't
discuss politics, the likelihood of threads devoted to that subject getting much response seems rather small. I understand your fears that your political opinions could color people’s perceptions about your baseball comments, it’s a sad but true byproduct of the divisive times in which we live. Shutting off discussion isn’t the answer, rather a non-emotional analysis/response, of the kind you do so well in analyzing baseball, will serve each of us better.
As I mentioned earlier, if there’s something that doesn’t need or deserve a response – just let it be. If we all ignore such remarks, regardless of the subject, those remarks will die of their own weight.
If you feel like it, try reading this essay:

It gives an interesting opinion on an approach to these types of situations. Hope it will help! But if not, so be it.
Enough said! Back to the (ugh) Astros.
