New York Yankees at Houston Astros, 1:05 PM CDT
New York @ Houston
This is obviously the best pitching match up name wise of the three games played against the Yankees. Roy is coming off a dominant performance against the Brewers in which he went 7 full innings, allowing just 1 run with 10 K's and no walks. Wang is coming of a nice outing of his own in which he went 7 1/3 innings, allowing just 1 run to earn his 7th win of the season. Hopefully we see more of the Roy that we seen last outing compared to the Roy we've seen earlier this season.

I'm sure the offense will benefit with Berkman on the bench.
(sarcasm)
And as I write that, Erstad fails to make a play at 1st base. Granted, it was a bullet right at him.

I don't understand
One of the biggest home crowds of the season, extra big city media coverage and Berkman and Matsui don’t play. It seems to me those two guy shoudd be in the lineup today. Why are they not playing?

last night on the telecast...
they said that Cooper had said he might rest Berkman, depending on the outcome of the 2d game. I was hoping that the prospect of the Yankees sweeping might persuade him ot play Berkman. Apparently not. I think Matsui is just being rested too.

they just said Loretta has batted .438 against Wang....
which may account for Matsui sitting.

Richard Justice agrees with me
in his blog today. He also mentioned Ty Wigginton did not start.

I wonder how disappointed AL pitchers are...
when they get a chance to bat in a NL park and don’t get on base.

Oswalt breaking out the high velocity FB on Giambi...
but Giambi walks to load the bases.

Umpire was squeezing Oswalt a lot on the Posada and Giambi at bats.
Umpire got mad at Oswalt for “showing him up” when Roy thought it was strike 3 on Posada. The dangerous thing about the Yankees lineup is the tremendous plate discipline up and down the lineup. You couldn’t find two more contrasting teams in terms of plate discipline than the Astros and Yankees.

Umpires should be replaced by robots as soon as possible
So we can stop having the game judged by douche bags.

We saw a continuation of Cooper's intentional base on balls strategy with A-Rod.
Oswalt walked him on 4 pitches, and clearly was pitching around him. By now, we should know that strategy is just asking for trouble.

With Astros' runners at the corners and 2 outs....
A-Rod makes a tremendous play on Tejada’s grounder.

You know what's hilarious?
We usually have equal or more hits than the other team, but we’re constantly losing!
by entropic soul on Jun 15, 2008 2:46 PM CDT 0 recs
two reasons:
the astros’ hittters are allergic to walks. And it doesn’t help if you lose 3 or 4 baserunners per game on stolen base attempts and bad base running (whch the Astros have done lalely).

2 more runs score....
If Astros had been alert they could have thrown out Wang; he hurt himself and was limping to home plate. The cut off man had his back to the action and just lobbed the ball into the infield.

Now 9-0 and this game is over.
Even with Wang injured, I can’t see the Astros overcoming the Yankees’ bullpen.

Crap I fell asleep during the game
They were down 3 and then I wake up to see the 3-run homer by A-Rod. :(

11-0 now. Wright has given up 2 bombs.
Wright is working his 3d straight day…..I don’t know if that has anything to do with his lack of command.
It won’t look like it from the score, but Oswalt actually pitched pretty well. He had a lot of bad luck, some poor calls by the plate umpire….but he was throwing his risinig fastball better than I’ve seen it all year.

And this is just the Yankees.
Imagine what the Red Sox are going to do to us.

My thoughts exactly
I was at the game, and it was excruciating. I only stayed for the whole thing because of my guest, who wanted to see the entire game (she’s a Yankees’ fan, of course—although she was a very gracious winner. Probably afraid I’d leave her ass at the curb, but nonetheless. . .). I scored a table at the 9 Amigos Patio for the Saturday night game with the Red Sox, but if it’s anything like this, it will have been a big waste of a lot of money.

So I'm sitting at the house
Watching Law and order with the wife at around 12:30PM… Next thing I know, I wake up and the game is in the 8th and the Astros are down either 11-0 or 13 to nothing… I put the pillow back over my head and went back to sleep for about 20 minutes.. I intended on watching the game and coming here to chat with you fine folks… but I slept through the game.. Lucky me!
What a pathetic series… our best pitcher by far was the pitcher we had the least amount of faith in(Chacon). Roy doesn’t look to have been too terrible today, but what terrible outing by Wright… sheesh. Well, at least tomorrow is an off day.

Oswalt wasn't happy about Cooper putting the second team on the field.
From the HC:
“You’ve got one of the hottest hitters in baseball not playing,” Oswalt said. “Ty Wigginton is swinging the bat unbelievable. Matsui gets on and works the count for us. I’m not taking anything away from the other guys, but when your regulars aren’t in it seems like the intensity isn’t as high.”

I don’t see the point in giving players days off before an off day. The off day is their day to rest

When we were losing last year...
I remember being frustrated with Garner for never settling on a regular lineup, for platooning way too much and not playing Scott enough, for seeming to rely on intuitions that defied all statistics, and for what seemed to be poor selections from the bullpen at crucial points in games. But there weren’t that many times that I thought that Garner’s decisions were a huge contributor to our losses.
Not so this year. The terrible over-aggressive base running, the decisions to rest starters who don’t usually take rests, and a wide array of just strange moves in games. More than once Cooper has failed to pinch hit for the pitcher and then removed the pitcher after facing 1 batter in the next inning. I will admit that the base-running had me excited during the brief stretch, early on, when it was working. But we are getting caught way, way too much for Coop to be unwilling to make an adjustment.

Just to pick up on one of your points....
Since the Rangers’ series, which seems to be when the consecutive series’ losses began, the Astros have a 64% success rate on stolen bases. The Astros’ success rate was something like 85% before that series. A sub-70% stolen base rate is just too low, and it costs you runs.

Cecil Cooper < Phil Garner, Cecil Cooper < Larry Dierker, Cecil Cooper < The Texans and Rockets. Cecil Cooper < George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush.
After the Yankees beat up the Astros this weekend, can Drayton McLane find someone else to manage the team? Some good choices:
Former Oilers coach Bum Phillips.
Former Oilers and Gamblers coach Jack Pardee.
Former Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich, who guided Houston to 2 NBA titles.
Comets coach Van Chancellor, he guided the Comets to 4 WNBA titles.
Former Rockets coach Bill Fitch,he guided the Rockets to the ‘86 NBA Finals.
George H.W. Bush, former President of the United States, former standout at Yale and Astros fan.
Choices above would be better than the guy who ruined the franchise’s image after those horrible losses to the Yankees.
