Clapp Denied Permission to Play in the Olympics
Stubby Clapp, the name and face of Canada's Olympic baseball team, was denied permission to play at the Beijing Games on Thursday, when the Houston Astros said they will not free him for international duty.A hitting coach for Houston's minor league affiliate in Lexington, Kentucky, Clapp was told by the Astros that he would have to remain with the organisation and could not compete in Beijing.
Wow... seems kind of wrong to me. He's a hitting coach for a Class-A team... why not give him the time off to compete in the Olympics. I don't understand it... but maybe I'm missing something.

I agree
What’s it gonna hurt to let him go? Makes the organization look bad.
75% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. . . the other 25% by Michael Bourn
I wonder how much time off he would require.
I tend to agree with ya’ll that it doesn’t look good. But if he would miss most of the minor league season, for example, maybe I could understand it.

Astros have already allowed 2 of their minor league...
players to join the Canadian olympic team. One article I saw mentioned that the Astros hired Clapp as a coach with the expectation that his playing days are over.
They why did they
let him play in the qualifiers? I just don’t see how it would be a big deal… it’s a single A team… They are too young and stupid to listen to their coach if he was a good coach. :)
