Roy Oswalt is pitching, so that means no J.R. Towles... honestly, with the way Towles has been hitting, Ausmus seems like an offensive upgrade. Cooper is still running Bourn out in the lead off spot... not sure how much longer that will(or should) continue to happen. In my opinion, he should be batting 7th or 8th in the lineup until he turns this around. Cecil Cooper today on the radio said that he wants Bourn to put the ball on the ground more often and start bunting more... Me as well.
Cubs have already lost today, so the Astros have a chance to move up a game on them into 2nd place. The Cardinals play the Rockies at 7:35 PM CDT.

Is anyone worried...
by Oswalt’s preference for Ausmus as his personal catcher? I’m not exactly worried by it, but I certainly hope that Towles catches Oswalt a few times this season, at least. Lots of time left for that to happen, obviously.
not worried at all
A lot of teams use a personal catcher for their ace… no difference here.
Go 'Stros!
Ugggh
Oswaly another HR. He is giving up way too many so far this year.
Maybe
He’ll only give up 4 more this year? :p

Before the game I heard Ausmus say that...
You can really tell when Roy has his stuff by seeing batters swing ahead of his curveball and when the curveball is low..
1st batter Lopez, struck out way ahead of a Roy O curveball low… so I guess that’s a good sign..
Go 'Stros!
Surprised to tune in and
see Astros down 2-0 with Roy O still pitching in the top of the first.

Bourn
IO think he might need to be moved to the eight hole for now. He just is not getting on base enoguh
Lance is in the top 10 in MLB
in the following stat categories:
AVG – .353 (3rd)
R – 34 (t-1st)
2B – 13 (t-2nd)
HR – 10 (t-2nd)
RBI – 32 (3rd)
OBP – .428 (9th)
SLG – .731 (3rd)
OPS – 1.159 (3rd)
He’s also in the top of the leaderboard in:
H – 42 (11th)
SB – 6 (t-21st)
Not too shabby.
Yes, I am a nerd.
Compare him to 1st basemen
And he leads most (and is second many he doesn’t) pretty much every category except for walks. He has twice as many steals as the next 1B.

Jeez
Is Roy pissed or something? He’s done nothing but strike out people for all four of his outs so far.
JD said that Roy looked really mad, after the HR...
he thinks that Oswalt is pitching with anger because he is pissed about giving up the HR.
I an't see the game
since I am in Dallas, but the Unoffical Scorer said the pitch to Zimmerman was a good pitch, but an even better piece of hitting, so credit him for that, I suppose
hard to tell...but I think it stuck in Guzman's glove.
Guzman maybe a bit surprised that Wiggy came in so hard when he wasn’t going to get the throw off..
fox sports southwest HD
don’t know if anyone else is watching on FSN-SW HD – or trying to, rather… but it’s really aggravating that they have their feeds switched – they are showing the FSN-SOUTH HD game – Atlanta vs. San Diego (when it clearly says Hou vs. Wash in the guide) ... sorry.. had to vent… someone fix it please…
if Bourn is going to hit infield choppers, he is better served...
to hit them toward the left side, and not toward 1st base.
I watched ESPN's replay...
of the highlights from Kerry Wood’s 20 K game ten years ago. Safe to say that his strike zone was a little wider than Roy’s today. I think he got robbed on that curveball for ball 4.
Brownie mentions 8 consecutive hits
That was a blast 2.
Ties the Astros record for consecutive hits
Go 'Stros!
Amazing
Is this the most impressive week we’ve ever seen from one hitter?

bye bye randolph!!!!
yes! just announced! astros traded stephen randolph to phillies for player to be named later.
at least Astros won't be tempted to call up Randolph...
truthfully, I hope randolph puts it together somewhere, but he probably won’t.
Oh
didn’t notice. Looking at gameday here.

BERKMAN!
Words can’t describe the tear he’s on now! He’s on FIRE!
Got a sort of observation to make and maybe those of you who watch the games regularly can chime in and agree or disagree but seeing that I don’t watch the games live and only see the highlights, Berkman looks much more confident/serious/professional this year. I don’t know exactly what it is but he is reminding me of Bagwell out there and like someone mentioned before, it’s like he is leading by example! Anyway, awesome to see!
Go Stros!

Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Serious and professional....
in the sense that he’s obviously making full effort every game. That was part of what was frustrating last year—he was struggling, and sometimes it just didn’t seem to bother him.
But he’s both on fire and obviously really committed this year. Even while he still blows bubble gum bubbles while rounding third :).
Yeah, didn't know exactly how to put it
but confident definitely. It’s almost like once he reaches base, he looks as if it’s exactly where he expected to be!
Go Stros!
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
He Looks More . . . Shaggy. . . .To Me This Year
Other than that, the same, still a goofball who happens to be one of the world’s best hitters.
He’s just in a zone, trying to look for an attitude adjustment or whatever to explain it is, like, bad history.

I wonder if the respective members...
of BLT have learned that this is their collective nickname. Seems like Berkman got the best deal… I wonder how Lee feels about being called lettuce.
you know, Tomato may not be a bad nickname for Tejada
you know, TomAYto-TomAHto, TejAYda-TejAHda
but yeah, i’m not sure i’d want to be called lettuce.

Berkman 2007 vs 2008
take a look at this – Berkman through 5/6/07 vs 5/6/08 (not including today’s stats, in other words)
2007
.277 AVG / .433 OBP / .347 SLG / 2 HR / 15 RBI / 1 2B / 29 BB / 1 SB
2008
.353. AVG / .428 OBP / .731 SLG / 10 HR / 32 RBI / 13 2B / 17 BB / 6 SB
one thing we forget...
about the struggling Berkman of early last year is that he was drawing a ton of walks.
He Had Like A 27 or 28-Game OnBase Streak
quietest one in history.

NL Central Update
Cubs lost to the Reds today, 9-0 (as previously mentioned)
Pirates up on the Giants in the 8th, 2-0
Brewers losing to the Marlins in the 8th, 6-2
Cards winning against the Rockies in the 3rd. 2-0
Another Hr
surrendered by Oswalt. Definitely not good.
Wigginton follows up with a single
So far, so good.

O'Connor comes in to relileve Perez..
he is another soft tossing llefty. At one time a good starting pitcher I had him on my fantasy team 2 years ago.
would be nice....
hate to see a gidb by Ausmus. But Ausmus bunts…pops it up, but it lands in a good spot, giving a chance of a hit…but has to settle for sac bunt.
I didn't say line out to the pitcher!
Are you even paying attention, Oswalt?

OK, Bourn has to ...
moved down, replaced in the order or something…the guy never gets on base. UGH!
Come on Stros!
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
I was excited...
with the stolen bases early. But this trade is looking less good as time passes. Hopefully he can figure it out.
I know it's obvious
but his speed is useless unless he can figure a way to get on base. At least Willy T would get 1 or 2 infield hits in a game but Bourn isn’t even doing that…
Let’s win this game – Go Stros!

did anybody watching at home
see what happened that caused a guy to get booted after LaDuca left the game? i was at the game and so confused through that whole ordeal. couldn’t see anything from my seats. did somebody throw something? or just say something?
by littlevisigoth on May 8, 2008 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions
according to the news report...
they said something and LoDuca took offense. Apparently the crowd around the guys whom were escorted out started chanting, “let them stay.” They must have said something really bad….otherwise that doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Here is what LoDuca said..according to Washington Times:
“The guy was being obnoxious the whole night,” he said. “I just kept my mouth shut and didn’t say anything. Then I’m coming off the field, and he told me I was a [wimp]. So I said, “If I’m a [wimp], come outside and wait for me.’ He turned red as a freaking ketchup bottle.”
Bourn is slumping and he has trouble with LHP...
especially a deceptive LHer like O’Conner. I would have PH with Loretta and then put Erstad in CF.
who puts mustard on a BLT
gotta be mayo
by littlevisigoth on May 8, 2008 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions
gotta disagree with that...
a BLT is not a BLT without mustard IMO. :)
When I first saw this comment, I didn’t think “BLT” immediately, but wondered if “mustard” was some kind of reference to showboating.
Was it a close play?
Did Ausmus get run over by Pena?
Man, Roy, barely got out of that inning!
Let’s go Astros!
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Not that close
Ausmus had time to step out of the way like a bullfighter (which he did) and tag a sliding Pena

Ausmus barely tagged him
Once again, the famous swipe tag. Good throw from Bourn.
Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.
Yep, totally agree...
These last 2 innings we get a guy to 3rd and can’t get him home…frustrating!

yeah...astros were in top 5 for BA with RISP...
but that was bound to come down. now is a bad time for it.
I remember....
that at some point in the not-too-distant past, Berkman had never had a walk-off hit. Is that still true?
Bourn was so exciting in April
Now he is consistent in the centerfield and is almost the forgotten man. Twice tonight Instead of thinking “Michael Bourn coming to bat” I thought “here’s the Automatic Out”

Tejada strike out swinging...
which makes the Berkman walk automatic. now the steal is problematic…who knows?
why the pitching change...
Nats have to be thinking DP and their outgoing pitcher looks like a groundball machine
According to GameCast though...
the outgoing pitcher was at 50 for his pitch count … just saying.

ASTROS WIN ON LEE FLYBALL
Milledge dropped it. Don’t know if he gave up because he knew runner would score.
matsui
key play was his steal and heads-up baserunning to take 3rd on the wild pitch. excellent game!!

Thanks guys for the play-by-play! Going for lunch now (happily, I might add!)
Way to go Astros!

Great job by the boys....
....I sure hope we stay on the winning side of all these one-run games we’ve been playing this year.
astros were due to win 1 run games...
When I looked last week, the Astros were something like 3-10 in 1 run games. These sure are more fun than the 9th inning games we blew.
It's a Great Night When
