Roy Oswalt is pitching, so that means no J.R. Towles... honestly, with the way Towles has been hitting, Ausmus seems like an offensive upgrade.  Cooper is still running Bourn out in the lead off spot... not sure how much longer that will(or should) continue to happen.  In my opinion, he should be batting 7th or 8th in the lineup until he turns this around.  Cecil Cooper today on the radio said that he wants Bourn to put the ball on the ground more often and start bunting more... Me as well.

Cubs have already lost today, so the Astros have a chance to move up a game on them into 2nd place.  The Cardinals play the Rockies at 7:35 PM CDT.

Is anyone worried...

by Oswalt’s preference for Ausmus as his personal catcher? I’m not exactly worried by it, but I certainly hope that Towles catches Oswalt a few times this season, at least. Lots of time left for that to happen, obviously.

by BTastros on May 7, 2008 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

not worried at all

A lot of teams use a personal catcher for their ace… no difference here.

Ugggh

Oswaly another HR. He is giving up way too many so far this year.

by Triple347 on May 7, 2008 7:11 PM CDT reply actions

Yep

He gave up 14 all last year… he’s already given up 10 this year.

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on May 7, 2008 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions

that

is not a good sign, at all.

by Triple347 on May 7, 2008 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe

He’ll only give up 4 more this year? :p

by entropic soul on May 7, 2008 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Before the game I heard Ausmus say that...

You can really tell when Roy has his stuff by seeing batters swing ahead of his curveball and when the curveball is low..

1st batter Lopez, struck out way ahead of a Roy O curveball low… so I guess that’s a good sign..

Go 'Stros!

maybe not

Roy down 2-0 after giving up a home run to Zimmerman with a man on.

Surprised to tune in and

see Astros down 2-0 with Roy O still pitching in the top of the first.

Bourn

IO think he might need to be moved to the eight hole for now. He just is not getting on base enoguh

by Triple347 on May 7, 2008 7:17 PM CDT reply actions

Lance is in the top 10 in MLB

in the following stat categories:

AVG – .353 (3rd)
R – 34 (t-1st)
2B – 13 (t-2nd)
HR – 10 (t-2nd)
RBI – 32 (3rd)
OBP – .428 (9th)
SLG – .731 (3rd)
OPS – 1.159 (3rd)

He’s also in the top of the leaderboard in:

H – 42 (11th)
SB – 6 (t-21st)

Not too shabby.

Compare him to 1st basemen

And he leads most (and is second many he doesn’t) pretty much every category except for walks. He has twice as many steals as the next 1B.

by entropic soul on May 7, 2008 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Jeez

Is Roy pissed or something? He’s done nothing but strike out people for all four of his outs so far.

by entropic soul on May 7, 2008 7:28 PM CDT reply actions

JD said that Roy looked really mad, after the HR...

he thinks that Oswalt is pitching with anger because he is pissed about giving up the HR.

by clack on May 7, 2008 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I an't see the game

since I am in Dallas, but the Unoffical Scorer said the pitch to Zimmerman was a good pitch, but an even better piece of hitting, so credit him for that, I suppose

by Triple347 on May 7, 2008 7:35 PM CDT reply actions

by entropic soul on May 7, 2008 7:46 PM CDT reply actions

Yikes...

Bourn really needs to get something going soon.

So many our rallies with Tejada, Berkman, Lee have come with 2 outs. They can’t be expected to keep that up.

by BTastros on May 7, 2008 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions

to hit them toward the left side, and not toward 1st base.

I watched ESPN's replay...

of the highlights from Kerry Wood’s 20 K game ten years ago. Safe to say that his strike zone was a little wider than Roy’s today. I think he got robbed on that curveball for ball 4.

BERKMAN!

Words can’t describe the tear he’s on now! He’s on FIRE!

Got a sort of observation to make and maybe those of you who watch the games regularly can chime in and agree or disagree but seeing that I don’t watch the games live and only see the highlights, Berkman looks much more confident/serious/professional this year. I don’t know exactly what it is but he is reminding me of Bagwell out there and like someone mentioned before, it’s like he is leading by example! Anyway, awesome to see!

by Stros Bro on May 7, 2008 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Serious and professional....

in the sense that he’s obviously making full effort every game. That was part of what was frustrating last year—he was struggling, and sometimes it just didn’t seem to bother him.

But he’s both on fire and obviously really committed this year. Even while he still blows bubble gum bubbles while rounding third :).

by BTastros on May 7, 2008 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, didn't know exactly how to put it

but confident definitely. It’s almost like once he reaches base, he looks as if it’s exactly where he expected to be!

He Looks More . . . Shaggy. . . .To Me This Year

Other than that, the same, still a goofball who happens to be one of the world’s best hitters.

He’s just in a zone, trying to look for an attitude adjustment or whatever to explain it is, like, bad history.

Berkman 2007 vs 2008

take a look at this – Berkman through 5/6/07 vs 5/6/08 (not including today’s stats, in other words)

2007
.277 AVG / .433 OBP / .347 SLG / 2 HR / 15 RBI / 1 2B / 29 BB / 1 SB

2008
.353. AVG / .428 OBP / .731 SLG / 10 HR / 32 RBI / 13 2B / 17 BB / 6 SB

by exit53 on May 7, 2008 8:27 PM CDT reply actions

did anybody watching at home

see what happened that caused a guy to get booted after LaDuca left the game? i was at the game and so confused through that whole ordeal. couldn’t see anything from my seats. did somebody throw something? or just say something?

by littlevisigoth on May 8, 2008 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions

according to the news report...

they said something and LoDuca took offense. Apparently the crowd around the guys whom were escorted out started chanting, “let them stay.” They must have said something really bad….otherwise that doesn’t make a lot of sense.

by clack on May 8, 2008 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Here is what LoDuca said..according to Washington Times:

“The guy was being obnoxious the whole night,” he said. “I just kept my mouth shut and didn’t say anything. Then I’m coming off the field, and he told me I was a [wimp]. So I said, “If I’m a [wimp], come outside and wait for me.’ He turned red as a freaking ketchup bottle.”
