Washington Nationals at Houston Astros, 7:05 PM CDT
Washington Nationals at Houston Astros, May 6, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
The Astros start a 3 game series today against the Washington Nationals at 7:05 PM CDT. So what do the Astros have in store for them?
The Nationals come into tonight's game with a 14-18 record and sit last in the NL East division. They have a 4-10 road record which could bode well for the Astros, but they are also coming off a 2 game win streak and have won 8 of their last 10 games.
Their best hitter is Cristian Guzman who leads the team in avg (.309) and has 3 home runs and 14 RBI's with an OPS of .794. Nick Johnson is the teams "slugger" and leads them in HR(4), RBI's(16) and OBP(.390). Johnson's avg is only.211; but he draws a lot of walks(23) which is why his OBP is as high as it is. He also strikes out a lot(21 times this season). The Nationals don't really have any one that just strikes me as someone we really need to watch.
It looks like the Astros will be facing Shawn Hill, Odalis Perez and John Lannan as the starting pitchers for the Nationals. All 3 pitchers have sub 4 ERA's, but none of them having a winning record. Perez has yet to win a game and sits at 0-3 with a 3.18 ERA. The Astros appear to have missed the Nationals best pitcher(W/L record wise) in Tim Redding... yes, that TIM REDDING!

Quick inning
The Nat’s second batter, grounds out to Matsui and Zimmerman burkes.
I’m surprised Zimmerman is sporting such a low batting average. Only .217 before this at bat and he’s only got 3 home runs. He’s not doing a whole lot better than Michael Bourn in that department.

Matsui
Nothing doing here. Grounds out to his Nats counterpart. Shawn Hill seems to be going through our hitters as fast as we are going through theirs.

Tejada
Flies out to RF.
6 up, 6 down, both sides. Quick first inning.

That makes two for Chacon.

Error on Wigginton.
good pick at deep 3d, but bad throw…bounced and Berrkman couldn’t hold it.
But DP bails him out on next play.
Astros text question
Who will have a breakout month of May. Michael Bourn, Hunter Pence, Jose Cruz Jr or Geoff Geary…
Cruz is a complete waste of a vote… even if he had a chance of turning this arund.. he’s a bench player and will get no shot at doing much other than pinch hitting(unless someone gets hurt… then he would still be a bench player behind Erstad).
And why Geary? What could he possibly do to be considered “Break Out”? He has a 1.93 ERA!!! If anything, he had a break out month of April! Why include him?
Go 'Stros!
Pence robbed
Took the 3-1 pitch, which was low… he’s on his way to first as the umpire finally calls it a strike.
Wow..
Late 2nd strike call on Pence… stupid umpire..
If you are going to call it a strike, don’t just sit there until Pence(who waited for the call) to start towards 1st to make the call… Call it instantly jerk.
Go 'Stros!
umpire has a delayed strike call tonight
Going along with the BLT sandwich thing, JD referred to Pence as the pickle on the side. This has to stop. There has to be something better!....but I love listening to these guys so much. There are by far the best duo in broadcast in MLB. I have MLB.TV and no pair of announcers even come close (although Mark Grace is extremely amusing.) JD is so cerebral.
Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.
Lee's double flummoxed the Nats' outfield
LFer and CFer were scurrying around like they had no idea how to deal with the LF wall.
Not exactly the guy I'd want in this situation
But oh well.. maybe he can make something happen.

IBB To Towles
All about the lack of respect for Bourn—and that disrespect paid off for the Gnats
Let's talk about something other than Tejada
Nah,
just saying.
If we had even an average leadoff hitter they pitch to Twoles. JD gave every reason in the book why the Gnats made the move—but there was only one.

17 moer strike outs for Chacon
and he’s got 20. :p

Wow nice play by Tejada
Pena drills a line drive at Tejada that Tejada gloves to his left just off the ground… it was one of those that you just want to get out of the way of and it’s in an awkward place… nice play anyways.
Go 'Stros!
odd 4 pitch walk to pitcher...
Chacon was fine on the other hitters in the inning. so all’s well that ends well. maybe he lost concentration because he faced the pitcher.
NL Central teams update
Pirates all over the Giants tonight. 8-0 in the 5th inning.
The Cubs beating the Reds (who doesn’t?) 3-0 in the 6th.
The Brewers on the bottom side of a 3-0 score in the 6th as well.
The Cards just started their game with the Rockies and lead 1-0.
Yep
JD said it was a hit.. I’m not impressed with the Nats outfield defense so far… they misplayed 2 or 3 plays already.
Go 'Stros!
When You're Not Good Enough To Play LF at MMP . . . .
you’re just not good enough.
People like to talk shit about Carlito’s D, but there’s no way he butchers that play.

Berkman...
punishes the “error” and drives in Matsui with a slow groundball up the middle that just squeaks by the 2B.
More awesomeness by Berkman
That’s 32 RBIs

Is Berkman playing at MVP level
or what?
Two hits tonight already – scored 1 run first time he batted. RBI in his second.
Now he steals Second.

Brian Runge, the home plate umpire
is about to get on my shit list with Angel Hernandez with this slow strike call.

Back Back Back!
Funny hearing JD yell that in the booth as Towles almost gets picked off.

If the Astros were in...
The NL East… we’d be in 4th place
The NL West… we’d be in 3rd place
The AL East… we’d be tied for 4th place
The AL Central… we’d be in 2nd place
The AL West… we’d be in 3rd place
But we are in the NL Central and are in 4th place.
(only comparing records by adding Astros to division, does not count which teams we would theoretically face more often if in a different division)
wiggy blows ass
dude what is he good at? he doesn’t play d and he is swinging at garbage. why did we trade wheeler for him again?
sound effects
what’s up with the barrage of sound effects they have been using? getting a bit tedious..

Phil Garner may still be manager.
On the bad side, Tim Purpura might still be GM (shudder)

It's like Berkman
refuses to let us lose. Either that or he really wants the triple crown and MVP this year.

yeah...
just saw a first pitch ground out to the pitcher – UGH!
Still can pull this out in the 8th or 9th! Another no decision for Chacon who kept us in the game.

7th straight,
according to The Unofficial Scorer.

Kearns..
who hit the go-ahead HR, now charges and dives to try and keep his 1-run lead.
Instead he misses it, and 2 runs score instead of 1. Astros lead 6-5!
this could be an exciting Astros season

No homeruns by the Astros
Not a big deal, but a little bit of a stink has been made about the Astros reliance on the long ball to score runs… not the case tonight.
Go 'Stros!
And on a night when...
the opposition has hit 3 homers, 2 of them not very far in the Crawford Boxes.
That is, incidentally...
why I think it’s hilarious when opposing announcers complain about the short porch in left. It’s not like only the Astros batters get to hit balls there.
Yes, BERKMAN!
Come on Valverde…let’s close this out and then I go and eat some lunch!
Go Stros!

Player of the Game – Who else – Lance Berkman! Thanks for the play-by-play, off to eat some lunch! Have a good night all and see you tomorrow!

Also of note...
is Lee’s 3-4 night with 3 RBI’s. Lance was getting on base, and Lee was driving him in.
Nice!
Hey we have a winning record for the first time since last year. :p
Did we ever have a winning record last year? :p

Triple Crown
Berkman may now be the only player in the top five for each triple crown catagory depending on how well some other players did today.
Based on the current numbers, he’d be 5th in hitting, 2nd in home runs and 2nd in RBIs.. but I’m sure those numbers have changed.
Real quick
I’m was stuck working four stories up on the tail of the C-5… I got back to the office in time to hear us take the lead in the 8th, and Valverde secure the win. It was awesome.
Berkman
passes Pujols for third place in NL OPS, with 1.159.
He’ no lower than fourth in the NL in the triple crown categories. He’s also tied for the league lead in doubles.
Astros also appear to be the only NL team with 3 players with 10+ doubles
Pretty exciting stuff, even before you consider the win streak, and Roy Oz going tomorrow.
