I was like, 'man, they don't look like they're going to throw me a fastball.' Then I got into a hitter's count, and they had to throw me a fastball. I just connected with it at the right time."

Plate Discipline.
Good illustration why plate discipline is so important for the players who are slumping. Pitchers are throwing lots of curves/sliders to Pence, Towles, and Bourn because they have been swinging at them. If they can maintain their plate discipline, though, they will get a fastball count.
