Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals, 7:15 PM CDT
Houston Astros @ St. Louis Cardinals
The return of the Magic Wandy!!! The real question is... what Wandy will we see? Wandy was very good in his only 4 starts of the season and unfortunately, made those starts when the Astros were not a very good team. I would think that if he made those 4 starts with how the Astros have been playing lately, he'd probably be closer to 3-0 than 1-0. Oh well, we get him tonight and hopefully he produces numbers(specifically ERA & K/BB ratio) like he did to start the season.
As you probably already know, Super Dave Borkowski was designated for assignment... if you didn't know, you can read more about it through ES's post here. Not a real huge loss... Dave hadn't been that good this year but he has had his moments. I'll always remember the 6 innings he pitched in relief on 8/15/06 in a losing effort... I know it's kind of odd that I'll remember him for a loss... but you can't hold 6 innings of relief and 2 earned runs against when the guy pitches the 13th - 18th innings. That game alone made me a at least partially a fan of Borkowski... even to this day.

cards lineup tonight
is probably the best offensive lineup they can muster. should be a good test for Wandy tonight. good game tonight.

Yea probably so
But it doesn’t scare me… I don’t think it holds a candle to what the Astros lineup is.. I’m not saying it won’t do well tonight, but on paper… it’s not close IMO

Wainwright has only given up more than 4 runs
Once this year .. and he usually goes 7+ innings.

Not getting anything for the triple hurt.
The Astros need every run they can get with Wainwright on the mound.

yeah
Berkman, Lee and Pence went down weakly. Carpenter dominated them – 2 strikeouts and a grounder to short. Astros need more than that from those three guys..

Wainwright is getting better
He has struck out 3 of the past 4 batters (Berkman, Pence, Wigginton)

Cardinals building that lead 6-1
It’s onty the fifth inning.
Will the Astros keep it close enough to come back in the 7th, 8th and 9th?
Wandy won’t get the win if Astros come back. He ’s pulled in the fifth with one out in the fifth.

Pulled with 2 outs in the fifth, not one out
Cassel in and gets first batter to ground out short to to end the inning.

doesn't seem likely
Wainwright has some exp. going deep in games. the way he’s throwing now, w/ the low pitch count to go with it, it doesn’t look good for a comeback.

The Astros have surprised me this year
with their record, but I think this game is a preview of what a lot of playoff games would look like, if by some miracle we make it this year. Our pitching staff isn’t strong enough and the level of opposing pitching is going to be a lot better than what we’ve been beating up on this month.

meh
not gonna win ‘em all, and this was the matchup in this series that looked the most ominous. Wandy got his pitch count up in the 90s and looked good at times. the rbi hits to Molina and Izturis (only three ER in the game), he had both of them 0-2 and just couldn’t put them away, both fouling off several pitches before delivering a knock. hopefully some sharpness to be able to throw a good out pitch will come back in time.
on the other side, Wainright is their ace for a reason. i’m not going to lose much sleep over this one. we need Roy to step up tonight and find his groove, so we can win the series though. it’d be nice to come away with at least four on this road trip, but this one would be big for us to keep up with the Joneses in the Central. friggin’ Dodgers couldn’t hang on last night and let the Cubbies sweep in 10 innings. flipped over to that game a couple of times, and can I just say that Berman has no business doing MLB games? aweful. and how about maintaining the illusion of objectivity when the color guy sings “take me out to the ballgame” in the 7th, wearing a Cubs jersey and saying “it’s so great to be back”.
anyway, hopefully we’ll get ‘em tonight. go Astros!

I fell asleep before I could turn to Cubs' x-tra innings game.
After littlevisigoth’s account about the lack of objectivity, I suppose I’m glad. I would have hated it. However, you have to hand it to the Cubs….they are winning on the road in this series.
