Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

What's Wrong with Roy?

At this point I really think that Oswalt may have an injury that is causing him to pitch so poorly.  No movement on the fastball, curve that is only there some of the time, and not the dominant number one Astros fans have gotten used to.  This guy has been as consistent as can be expected for his entire career but this year it is just not there this season.

In the last 6 seasons only once did he not go at least 212 innings and his worst ERA and WHIP have been 3.49 and 1.33.  This year he is on pace for 5.6 and 1.49.  He also have 6 QSs in 11 games.  In the last 3 years he has averaged 24 QSs and 33 starts.

What is wrong?  Has he worn down?  I don't think so.  He is only 30 - 31 next month - which is not old and he has shown no signs of it before.  Is his groin an issue?  Is there something else we don't know about?

I am loving the way the Astros are fighting and clawing for wins, coming from behind, and having fun while playing with a never say die attitude.  Can it continue without that one sure thing every five games and a top of the order guy?  I just don't see it.

My theory stands...

Kevin Kouzmanoff’s line shot that hit him in the hip on Opening Day had to have thrown him out of sync.

Come on Matt

You really think it is that easy? He is out of sync because of a liner back at him? I was in Africa so I did not see the play. Is it in his head or is it a physical thing then? Either way I can’t see it affecting him this long without someone figuring it out. I would like that to be the problem because I think it is fixable on the fly. Meaning no DL time.

My friends suggested I see someone about my baseball problem. So I made an appointment but just ended up helping the doctor with his fantasy team.

That wasn't the only line drive which hit him.

He had two line drives hit the same spot on his body, the latter one presumably aggravating the earlier injury. Supposedly that is why he felt pain in the Rangers’ game and tried to tell the coaches that he should not pitch anymore (but did so anyway, because Cooper misunderstood him). He had been pitching well for about 3 weeks prior to that Rangers’ game. Did that continue to bother him last week? He says “no,” but it’s hard for me to believe it might not have had some continuing effect.

I wish I had an answer

I can’t see the line drive being the reason he hasn’t been the typical Roy… I just think all of the years of pounding fastballs may be catching up with him.

Does he need DL time

Or is he done then?
I just can’t see him breaking down at 31 when he has not shown signs of it in the past. He could be in decline but he still should be good for 180+ innings if not 220.
The Astros need to figure it out. I can’t see October baseball in Houston without Oswalt being healthy.

Didn't mean it as

him breaking down or losing his stuff… more that hitters are on to his scheme… I mean, if you know a guy is going to throw you a fastball 1/2 the time… you can sit on fastball everytime… even if you screw up half of them… you’re still sitting dead red on fast ball a good part of the time. Even a well place fastball, to any decent hitter if they are sitting on it and expecing to swing… is more than likely going to get a piece of it.

Well, he has thrown fewer fastballs than ever this year.

In fact, Oswalt and Ausmus say that their “cure” will be to rely more heavily on the fastball and curveball, instead of the slider and change up. He said he will go back to what got him here. Of course, the key will be whether he can locate the fastball at the knees. That is why he used to be so devastating, his ability to locate a fastball there. Plus his curveball has been on and off too much this year. I haven’t seen any stats which tell us what pitches produced his HRs. The fact that Ausmus wants to ditch the slider makes me wonder if many of the HRs were coming from hanging sliders.

Roy,

continues to leave balls over the plate, and is always falling towards first base after he throws a pitch. I think that its either his hip or his groin personally. And the liner was bad enough to keep Oswalt from going out in the Gaslamp District with Jake Peavy. Peavy said it looked bad, and I believe it is.

In the article I wrote on Oswalt last week....

I mentoned a statistical oddity, that he had more trouble with runners on 1st base scoring than runners on 2d base. That made me wonder if he has more trouble pitching from the stretch. If Oswalt has or had a groin injury, the effects might show up most when he pitches from the stretch.
