Who should go down?

With Wandy Rodriguez slated to return to the club in the not so distant future, and Brian Moehler pitching well as a starter over his 4 starts this season, who should the Astros send down/release/trade etc. to make room for Wandy.  I'm assuming it will be a pitcher since the Astros already have 12 pitchers.

Nieve

He’s been a bit patchy IMO and I think he needs to get back to Triple-A and work into some sort of groove

agree.

Nieve hasn’t shown the control needed to come into a meaningful game situation with runners on base. He won’t be able to get enough work at the big league level based on what he has done. He needs lots of work to get his command back after the TJ surgery, and he can do that at AAA.

okay

this is just silly. two votes for Roy Oswalt? a vote for Valverde? really people, how can you be so cavalier with your votes?

Villareal

Go to Round Rock. Come back when you remember how to pitch.

DFA Blow up Borkowski

He has been horrible all year and most of last year….I’d rather have Neive at least he has upside….that had to be the ugliest inning all season….

"now you chunkin' in there.."

It won't be Nieve...

Cassel was just called up to take his place after today’s loss.

Hmm

I wonder if he’s just keeping it warm for Rodriguez then… maybe he’ll be the one to go back down.

Go 'Stros!

And when

Geary comes back?

Villareal (who pitched fine today)? or Cassel?

Stick a fork in Bork

He’s done. They’re not going to bring Cassel up just to send him right back down. Bork’s the obvious … really the only … choice. Wright has to stay. Byrdak’s pitching well. That leaves only Bork and Villareal as marginal relievers. Villareal’s making too much money to join Woody Williams at the “Getting Paid a Lot for Doing Nothing Club.”

There is a bright side to the '08 season.

Agreed

The only other choices I’d see would be Moehler or Sampson, both have had mixed success as starters, while Borks has mostly been just flat out bad. His numbers actually weren’t too bad going into the last outing, but he hadn’t pitched in a single game with a lead that he didn’t give up at least one run. All his success had been in mop-up duty.

One of Moehler or Sampson will lose their spot in the rotation when Wandy comes back. The question is, will they be better out of the ‘pen than Borks? Then the next question will be, will Cassel stick around once Geary returns or will another of the three mentioned get the boot. I suppose we’ll have a few opportunities to see Cassel out of the ‘pen before that decision needs to be made.

For what it’s worth, I think Sampson is the only one of the three that wouldn’t need to be DFA’d. Somebody might correct me, but based on both of their MLB service time, I’m making the assumption that neither Borks or Moehler have options. My understanding of those rules is a bit fuzzy.

Bork DFA'd

He will look for another job, but is willing to return to Round Rock if nobody wants him (good possibility IMO). He said he wasn’t surprised.

Yes, Moehler can’t be sent down, which I don’t think the Astros would even consider anyway. Moehler was given Sampson’s rotation spot. Sampson and Cassel will work out of the pen until Geary is ready to return, and I assume one of those two will be sent down to Round Rock. I think Cassel and Sampson are capable of being moved back and forth between RR and Houston (with the condition that they have to stay 10 days in Round Rock if they are sent down).

I'd prefer they bite the bullet

and DFA Villareal, but I don’t think McLane would swallow that salary.

That makes it Cassel or Sampson to go down, probably Cassel, who is perhaps being brought up just as an additional arm until Geary returns. Seems like after being out for 15+ days they’d give Geary a rehab outing or two to pitch to live batters, but apparently not.

There is a bright side to the '08 season.
