He is an average starting pitcher...
If he ends up with 4.5 ERA for the season, which he probably will, that will be fine. But that is all the astros have in Backe, Chacon, and Sampson…. a bunch of 4-5 slot pitchers.

needed more patience from Tejada and Lee...
because Gallagher was struggling with his control. Berkman is just in a bad, slumping place, and we can only hope he comes back to form as soon as possible.

Hmmm… well.. the upside to not pinch hitting for him is you get to keep him (he’s not been scored upon since the first) and you can lead off with Bourn next time if he gets out, I suppose. Which he just did.

Bad start, giving up three runs in the first…
but he’s faced the minimum since then and is now in the in the sixth inning with 2 outs.
He did allow one hit during that span, but picked the runner off at first.

Albert Pujols hits pitcher in the face with line drive
I switched to the Cardinals-Padres game just intime to see Albert Pujols hit a line drive to the Chris Young’s face. Chris Young walks off the field (with assistance). Pujols looked scared. He and the Padres’ first baseman held arms around each others waist as they prayed for Chris Young. Scary moment

Pujols Wrecking Crew
He’s taking out their whole team. Resumed play in the inning saw him slide into home and bend Bard’s foot in a direction it really shouldn’t have gone in.

Why hasn't Pujols been hit yet?
He’s probably sent two Padres to extended stays on the disabled list tonight and, granted, hitting Young in the face was just a freak accident.. but then he has to slide right into Josh Bard for the purpose of sweeping Bard to the ground.

I agree
After all the crap he and La Russa were spouting about Towles blocking the plate and risking injury, how can anybody think the second incident was accidental? Pujols has fooled a lot of people with all his platitudes (me included) but this season at least I think he’s been as big a jerk as his manager.

When I saw the replay of Pujols vs. Bard....
I immediately thought about the Towles incident. Remember LaRussa saying that Pujols is taught to cut the legs out from underneath the catcher…well, that’s what he tried to do. A post on the BBTF board said that Bard’s ankle was broken, but I don’t know if that is true. Unlike his reaction to the line drive, Pujols didn’t seem to show much remorse at the time for Bard’s injury (granted, he may not have known the seriousness then). He has the smirk on his face and briefly looks back as he walks away from Bard in a heap on the ground.

not Pujols fault
on that one. Bard was blocking the plate, and Pujols just went in with a normal slide and happened to catch his foot. it wasn’t like the Towles incident where he went out of his way to undercut him when the play wasn’t even going to be close. blocking the plate comes with some inherent risks, and i’m sure even Bard would admit to that.

I agree that it is different than Towles....
to the extent that the ball was about to be, or had already been, caught by the catcher and Pujols faced a play at the plate. For that reason, Pujols has a justification for coming in hard. But I wouldn’t call it a normal slide. Pujols came in high, and attempted to undercut the catcher. I’m not saying it was out of bounds, though. I don’t know how Bard feels about it.

OK, not necessarily a "dirty" slide...
though I still think he came in high. But I couldn’t help but see the similarity between the way he undercut Bard and LaRussa’s quote (after the Towles incident) that Pujols had been taught to take out the catcher’s legs. Pujols’ reaction after the incident didn’t give me a good feeling either, and probably skews my view. As one of the articles at Gas Lamp Ball said, it would have been nice if Pujols showed the same concern for Bard that he did for Young. Now I’m finished talking about it. :)

Gutty win
Was out of media contact most of the game, but got a 5-3 radio score check in the middle of the game and heard the Astros and Cubs last at bats. Great win! Then, get home and see the pbp and box score – all three runs in the 1st, and Chacon only gives up 5 total hits over seven innings – outstanding. I mean, is this guy a value pick up (so far) or what?
Of course, I worried that when Lance’s spell ended it wouldn’t just end, it would reverse into a slump, and the three Ks tonight do nothing to ease the anxiety. But, still. Two out of three against the division leader. Nice to have.
I haven’t posted much this season, but it’s been exciting to watch this team gel and win some series.
Too early to despair.

Great win
Nice that Chacon finally got a decision (and it was a win). They mentioned in the broadcast that Chacon has struggled the most in the first inning of his starts. They weren’t kidding. He’s given up 14 of his 32 runs yielded in the 1st inning of games, which equates to a run average of 12.6 (ERA of 9.0, cause all four of his unearned runs have come in the first inning of games). His ERA after the 1st inning is 3.16. His WHIP in the first inning is 2.0, while his WHIP after the 1st inning is 1.29. Just keep that in mind next time you get down on him for giving up a run or three in the first inning.
Also nice to see Bourn step up and have a good day. He’s 7-16 since being reinserted in the leadoff role (probably as meaningless as saying Berkman is 1-10 with 8 K’s since he streak ended). If he and Matsui do their job, there’s really no stopping this offense, even without Berkman being superhuman.

My speculation on the reason for Chacon's pattern...
Chacon throws a variety of pitches which he is willing to use with regularity. In his quality starts, the pitch which he relies upon is different from game to game. In some games, he was going to his curveball. Last night, it seemed to be the slider. In some games, it has been his change up or his fastball. (Deshais brought this up a few weeks ago, and I have noticed that it seems true.) Perhaps he spends the first couple of innings attempting to identify his best pitch, and in the process allows some runs, but then settles down once he finds what is working.
