Houston Astros at San Francisco Giants, 2:45 PM CDT
Houston Astros at San Francisco Giants, May 15, 2008 2:45 PM CDT
Chris Sampson takes the hill today against Tim Lincecum. Lincecum is by far the best Giants pitcher so far this season, and it hasn't been close. Of the Giants starters with more than 1 game started, Lincecum is the only one with more than 2 wins, and less than a 4.00 ERA. In his 7 starts this season, he has yet to give up more than 3 runs, and yet to last less than 6 innings. Well... there's a 1st time for everything!
Sampson on the other hand is having a down season. In his 7 starts this season, he has only lasted 6 innings 3 times and has given up 5 runs or more in 3 of his 7 starts. But on the bright side, his last game out he went 7 full innings and didn't yield a run... so maybe he's turning the corner? Well see...
The Astros will be without Miguel Tejada today who is scheduled to sit for the 1st time this season... I'm not a real big fan of him sitting(since he is a guy who likes to play every day and really doesn't want to sit), but hopefully it will benefit him.
The Astros are still in 3rd place behind the Cardinals and Cubs; both teams in action today as well. A win today for the Astros and losses for the Cards and Cubs would put the Astros in 2nd place, 1/2 a game behind the Cubbies. A win today would also make it 4 straight series wins for the Astros and put them 6 games above .500.

All we can hope to do...
.....is take him deep in the count, get him to 110 pitches by the 6th-th inning and then make it rain like we have been in the late innings. Go ‘stros.
yeah
and we can bring Tejada off the bench late in the game, when we’ll need him, so maybe sitting him won’t be so bad.

i doubt too many people give a crap about Detroit
but what’s with those guys this year? they’re about to get swept by the Royals and have the lowest win total in the AL. they’re lineup isn’t hitting and they’re pitchers aren’t pitching. if they lose again, they’ll be nine games under .500. who would have guessed that?
i'm listening online, so i didn't see it
so what happened? i heard bouncer to short and assumed a DP. WTF?

saw the replay of Loretta's blunder
on Gameday (nice feature, btw). kind of a middle hop, but should have been handled and probably should have been charged an error.
it’d be nice for him to pick up a rbi to compensate a little.
guess not

Pirates leading now
8-5 in the 8th. if that score holds, we could move into 2nd place with a win. i know it means nothing this early in the season, but it’d be nice to work our way up to the top of the standings while we’re on this nice run.
Cubs are ahead in their game.
So it looks like the Astros, Cardinals and Brewers will all fall a game back today.

you're giving up
on this one already? have some faith, bro!

He's pitch count is such
that Lincecum could go 8 innings today. Don’t the guys know they need to work the counts?
So..
Since Loretta is playing short, and he’s at least part of the reason we are losing…. if we do end up losing this game, can we blame Cooper for sitting Tejada? :)
Go 'Stros!
It's like this was a white flag game.
Cooper has been trying to find a game to rest Tejada, so he figures, rest him in a game we’ll lose anyway. I definitely don’t like the idea of starting Loretta at short in a game featuring Chris Sampson. Sampson, of all pitchers, needs the most help from shortstop.
doesn't sound
like Sampson’s getting hit hard and it sounds like he’s getting the ground balls he’s supposed to. he’s just not getting the outs.
can we go back
to blaming Coop? i liked that better.

off Bourn's glove?
should he have caught that?
crap. this one’s looking pretty out of reach, even though it’s only the third inning.
It was a tough play
Running towards the fence, head turned at a ball over his head… BUT it did hit his glove, and like I was always told… if it hits your glove, you should catch it..
Go 'Stros!
yes
it was in his glove, then it was not.
by entropic soul on May 15, 2008 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Bourn showed good speed to get to the ball.
many CFers don’t get there. However, once he caught up to the ball, he should have caught it.
Damn the ball hit the RF'er in the head.
Ouch.
by entropic soul on May 15, 2008 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions
there's one
he still owes ua another.
and maybe Bourn owes us a couple.
nice that we answered quick though. at least maybe it’s a game again.
by littlevisigoth on May 15, 2008 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions
of course
it would have really felt weird if he didn’t at least pick up one RBI there.

off Winn's head?
man, this is a game i really wish i had some video

It hit the wall first, but bounced back and hit his head.
Doesn’t seem to have hurt him too much, I suppose.

Astros
are the only team to score 3 runs in an inning of Lincecum this season and only the 2nd team to score multiple runs on him in an inning.
Go 'Stros!
what?
Puma struck out in an rbi opportunity?
well, Lincecum is up at 89 pitches, so maybe we can chase him in the 6th. it’s not over yet!
does Lincecum
have a slow delivery from the stretch? three stolen bases so far, including Lee and Berkman.
Towles k's for the 3rd time
Last at bat he didn’t swing at a pitch, this one he didn’t lay off one…
Go 'Stros!
10th K
for Lincecum by the way. i think that puts him in the lead in the MLB over Peavy.
by littlevisigoth on May 15, 2008 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions
so much
for chasing Lincecum in the 6th. he’s at 105 pitches, but i’d be he at least starts the 7th.
Matsui
having a pretty nice day, 2-3, with a double, walk, SB, and a run scored.
after his two out double, Taschner’s gone and Walker’s on. it’s the 7th inning and there’s two outs with the middle of our lineup up. here’s where the flurry of runs begins… right?
guess not again
Pence grounds out harmlessly to short. Would Tejada have done that in the three hole, Coop?

Berkman with a blue star
snags a liner and doubles up Rowand, who was on first, all aparently while blowing a bubble.
trouble finding the zone though
walking Bourn would be nice.

Matsui smoking hot today
men on the corners for Pence. c’mon Hunter!
yet another move to the pen. double switch coming with the third reliever this inning, fourth in the game… Vinnie Chulk.
Pence out on a nice catch of foul pop by 1st baseman.
I didn’t think they had a chance to get that pop up.
good call

Hey all
So we’re tied 7-7? Sorry, no radio here in SA today – all Spurs coverage atm.

yeah, no shit
if we win this one, it will certainly have been against all odds, giving away a 6-0 lead to one of the hottest pitchers in the NL, two unearned runs in the game (a couple more that should have been prevented), no Tejada… it’d be nice.

I’m getting used to these late game rallies.

can't tell
from the radio broadcast. Byrdak will come in with all the time he needs to warm up for the lefty Lewis.

can't tell what happened that is
maybe Geary said, “you’re killing me, Blue!” and he wasn’t kidding.
by littlevisigoth on May 15, 2008 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions
Ausmus apparently saw some kind of injury indication...
on Geary’s delivery and called the time out and called the trainer out. Geary seemed to have very little say in the matter.
interesting
let’s hope Byrdak can get it done.

would have been nice to tack
another one or two on, but hopefully the narrow lead is enough. Winn, Rowand, and Bowker due up.

Damn... no Tejada music
What are the chances he goes yard again? You know Brad is a streaky hitter… It wouldn’t surprise me to see a double.

Yeah - considering Tejada's .340+ average was on the bench

I've been a life long 'Stros fan (29 yrs)
And I don’t ever remember a Stros team winning this many with late game rallies, this early in the season…
Truely remarkable

This is so huge.
Getting a win after being down 6-0 with Lincecum on the mound is incredible. It was great to see so many players contributing offensively.
Awesome
When’s the last time we won SIX GAMES in a west coast swing? unbelievable!
should be a fun series in Arlington. their record is crap, but they’ve been scoring a bunch of runs lately and may be the next hottest team in baseball behind the Astros (10-4 in May).
Ahh..
That’s going to be a track meet holmes…

Great win
Too bad I wasn’t able to watch any of the San Fran series because of blackouts. I’m excited to be able to watch the Rangers series, should be a good one. If we can get two in Arlington that would make for an 8-2 roadie, very impressive. I’m loving everything this team is doing. Pitchers are keeping us in it. Offense is incredible. Bullpen is nice. Can you imagine if Roy is lights out again and Mike Born hits at least .240. Amazing.
Bourn to Run!
12 - 1 since April 29
in games where a #$%^!! opposing pitcher doesn’t homer :-)

An Astounding Win
Not that any of it is due to Sampson, but the team has now won matchups that began with Sampson vs. Ben Sheets and Sampson vs. Tim Lincecum.
It’s like our offense can make up for any pitching deficiency.
Let's talk about something other than Tejada
WOW! Speechless...
I, like many Astros fans had this penciled in the loss column but low and behold, I check the score here this morning (the game was on when I was sleeping) and the Astros erase a 6-0 deficit and come back and win this 8-7! Incredible! PH HR by Erstad and Berkman with the “water shot” – Awesome!
Keep it going Stros!
SeoulStro
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Yeah.
I thought we could go 3-1 in this series, but I didn’t really think this was one of the games we’d win.
