Well, last night didn't turn out exactly how I'd hoped, but if there is one bright side about last night, it's that the Cubs and Cardinals both lost as well, and the Astros still sit just 1 1/2 games out of 1st place.

The Astros are sending Brian Moehler to the hill tonight to face Pat Misch.  Last time out, Moehler made his 1st start of the season(1st start since 2006) and went 5 full innings without giving up a run.  I have to say that I was very surprised with that and didn't give Moehler much of a chance before the game to pitch very well...  well, that wasn't the 1st time I've ever been wrong, and it won't be the last... heck, if you ask my wife... I could always be wrong.  Anyways, I'll just say that I have no idea how he'll do tonight and leave it at that.

The Cubs and Cardinals have already started their games tonight with the Cubs leading the Padres 3-0 through 1 2/3 innings and the Cardinals and Pirates still scoreless in the 2nd.

NL Central Update

Unfortunately, ALL of the NL Central teams are winning right now. Well, except the Pirates who are playing the Cardinals right now. And they say the NL Central is weak.

Mr. Entropic Soul

Good to see you on here, sir. I will try to keep you better company tonight and not turn to the bottle early like I did during last night’s game….

Can't stand the Cubs

Just drove in another…

So I’ve spent many a night on here reading/enjoying the comments as I watch the gameday feed. Finally decided to sign up for an account and maybe post on occasion.

So how much longer

for Bourn in the 1 hole?

.191 avg and a .267 OBP. Someone on 790 today called him the Adam Everett of this years team… great defense, no offense…

This pithcher's got pretty tame stuff

83 MPH fastball? Page right out of Zito’s book

by drsarc on May 14, 2008 9:33 PM CDT   0 recs

How did Ausmus miss that??

That should be an E2

I'm not baseball expert

But I’m just supposing here.. when someone throws a ball at you, you catch it, right? So I would be correct in assuming the guy called “the Catcher” should be the best at catching, right?

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 9:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ausmus

I rest my case!

Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.

by backstop8 on May 14, 2008 9:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Why Ausmus is in
Towles, who is hitting .157, didn’t play Wednesday, but only because Cooper wanted to keep Brian Moehler paired with Brad Ausmus. Moehler pitched five shutout frames in a spot start in Los Angeles with Ausmus behind the plate, and Cooper decided to stick with the veteran tandem for this game, too.

From here

Isn't Ausmus the reigning

Gold Gloe catcher?

No

He last won it in ‘06

Let's talk about something other than Tejada

Matsui & Pence

Both playing. That’s good to see after that late inning collision last night.

What the heck was with...

that strikeout call on Matsui?

Dunno

I blinked and missed it..

Worst strike call

I’ve seen in awhile. Practically at hit ankles.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 10:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Moehler gets through the 3rd

with no runs scored. This has much to do with how freakin slow Bengie Molina is. Man, that guy looks bigger than Price Fielder.

More Barry Bonds Questions

I feel I’m obsessing about Barry Bonds since I asked about him the other day But . . .

1. Assuming he does not ever play again but does not announce his retirement until after the season, will he be on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time in 2012 or 2013?

2. Has anyone been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame while in prison?

No real thoughts

But I guess that means the Padres are giving up

minimal thoughts

I’m an Edmonds fan. Padres let him go because he underperformed offensively and defensively. It looks like his productive career is over.

A color commentator (maybe a Giants announcer; maybe a Cardinals or Brewers announcer ) speculated the Cubs want to send their center fielder to AAA to work out some problems; and see Edmonds as a short time fill in assuming he continues to falter ; or if Edmonds manages to regain his form he is a great pickup.

Pence slid head first

Wasn’t he told to stop that ?

Not sure if he was told to stop

But I remember him having sliding practice to avoid it.

May have cost him the Rookie of the Year.

!!!

I knew we would squander that opportunity….

by drsarc on May 14, 2008 10:29 PM CDT   0 recs

What do you expect

when we have Loretta, Ausmus and Moehler batting? What if we had signed Aaron Rowand instead of starting Bourn? What if we actually had decent third baseman in some sort of capacity? Catching has also been close to worthless lately.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 10:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

1-2-3

For Moehler… Berkman ranges far to his right to get the last out on a ground ball.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 10:34 PM CDT   0 recs

I don't have much confidence in Moehler.

Almost tempted to call for PHing for Moehler when he came up to bat with 2 runners on. But the Astros are in a bind if they don’t keep him in for awhile, because of the impact on the bullpen.

NL Central Update

Cards, Cubs and Reds all win. We won’t be moving up today.
Brewers and Pirates lose

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 10:38 PM CDT   0 recs

hah...

Nice of Tejada to golf-shot one of those, if the ump is going to call it a strike anyway.

by BTastros on May 14, 2008 10:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bourn is 0 for 3

But he put the ball in play each time. There’s hope.

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on May 14, 2008 10:39 PM CDT   0 recs

yeah...

He’s had a number of bad-luck outs lately. Sometimes nothing goes right.

by BTastros on May 14, 2008 10:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

lol

No respect for Lee’s arm from Durham.

Not that Lee’s defense commands a ton of respect… but that was a really iffy spot to try for a double.

by BTastros on May 14, 2008 10:46 PM CDT   0 recs

lee had to barehand the ball...

so maybe it was hard for Durham to predict he could do that. But that decision was very damaging to the Giants’ position in this game.

by clack on May 14, 2008 10:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Moehler not so hot today.

He’s got luck on his side though, but how long before it runs out.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 10:54 PM CDT   0 recs

forgot his sandpaper today?

oh, that was mean, I guess. But couldn’t resist.

by clack on May 14, 2008 11:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Shhhhh...

You’re gonna blow his game.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 11:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Pence...

would have had his second stolen base of the night, but Ausmus strikes out to end the inning.

7th inning

We will pwn the 7th inning.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 11:03 PM CDT   0 recs

not a good start...double for Castillo

Lee hurts himself trying to dive for the ball.

by clack on May 14, 2008 11:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Last year about this time,

Astros were killed in 7th innings

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on May 14, 2008 11:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Carlos Lee gave it all he had on that dive

He’s not just here to bat. I hope he is not injured.

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on May 14, 2008 11:07 PM CDT   0 recs

This would be the best day to get injured

and have to rest a day. We aren’t going to win tomorrow anyway.

"Astros games start in the 7th..."

...with Lincecum tomorrow.

as he watches Lance Berkman being intentionally walked.

I like the Giants TV announcers

(we get them on MLB.TV for this series).

They are so much better than most teams’ announcers. ( I like the Astrso TV team too)

Worst error of the night?

Matsui’s or Ausmus’?

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on May 14, 2008 11:39 PM CDT   0 recs

Matsui gets the last out..

so all that ends well…well,.. is well.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 11:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Possible blocked view of the ball

thanks to the second base umpire. As suggested by JD and Brownie. Seemed like a really easy play to make.. so I guess that’s plausible.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 11:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well...

Just as a blunder relative to how standard the play is, I think Matsui’s is worse.

In terms of the effect on the game, Ausmus’s (err, Moehler’s?) was worse.

by BTastros on May 14, 2008 11:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Box score

now shows it as Moehler, so i think they changed it (appropriately).

by littlevisigoth on May 15, 2008 9:00 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Pence...

has looked good lately. Unlucky that the LF’ers trap attempt worked, so just a single
