Well, last night didn't turn out exactly how I'd hoped, but if there is one bright side about last night, it's that the Cubs and Cardinals both lost as well, and the Astros still sit just 1 1/2 games out of 1st place.

The Astros are sending Brian Moehler to the hill tonight to face Pat Misch.  Last time out, Moehler made his 1st start of the season(1st start since 2006) and went 5 full innings without giving up a run.  I have to say that I was very surprised with that and didn't give Moehler much of a chance before the game to pitch very well...  well, that wasn't the 1st time I've ever been wrong, and it won't be the last... heck, if you ask my wife... I could always be wrong.  Anyways, I'll just say that I have no idea how he'll do tonight and leave it at that.

The Cubs and Cardinals have already started their games tonight with the Cubs leading the Padres 3-0 through 1 2/3 innings and the Cardinals and Pirates still scoreless in the 2nd.

NL Central Update

Unfortunately, ALL of the NL Central teams are winning right now. Well, except the Pirates who are playing the Cardinals right now. And they say the NL Central is weak.

Mr. Entropic Soul

Good to see you on here, sir. I will try to keep you better company tonight and not turn to the bottle early like I did during last night’s game….

So I’ve spent many a night on here reading/enjoying the comments as I watch the gameday feed. Finally decided to sign up for an account and maybe post on occasion.

So how much longer

for Bourn in the 1 hole?

.191 avg and a .267 OBP. Someone on 790 today called him the Adam Everett of this years team… great defense, no offense…

I'm not baseball expert

But I’m just supposing here.. when someone throws a ball at you, you catch it, right? So I would be correct in assuming the guy called “the Catcher” should be the best at catching, right?

Ausmus

I rest my case!

Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.

by backstop8 on May 14, 2008 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why Ausmus is in
Towles, who is hitting .157, didn’t play Wednesday, but only because Cooper wanted to keep Brian Moehler paired with Brad Ausmus. Moehler pitched five shutout frames in a spot start in Los Angeles with Ausmus behind the plate, and Cooper decided to stick with the veteran tandem for this game, too.

From here

Moehler gets through the 3rd

with no runs scored. This has much to do with how freakin slow Bengie Molina is. Man, that guy looks bigger than Price Fielder.

More Barry Bonds Questions

I feel I’m obsessing about Barry Bonds since I asked about him the other day But . . .

1. Assuming he does not ever play again but does not announce his retirement until after the season, will he be on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time in 2012 or 2013?

2. Has anyone been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame while in prison?

minimal thoughts

I’m an Edmonds fan. Padres let him go because he underperformed offensively and defensively. It looks like his productive career is over.

A color commentator (maybe a Giants announcer; maybe a Cardinals or Brewers announcer ) speculated the Cubs want to send their center fielder to AAA to work out some problems; and see Edmonds as a short time fill in assuming he continues to falter ; or if Edmonds manages to regain his form he is a great pickup.

What do you expect

when we have Loretta, Ausmus and Moehler batting? What if we had signed Aaron Rowand instead of starting Bourn? What if we actually had decent third baseman in some sort of capacity? Catching has also been close to worthless lately.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

1-2-3

For Moehler… Berkman ranges far to his right to get the last out on a ground ball.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 10:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't have much confidence in Moehler.

Almost tempted to call for PHing for Moehler when he came up to bat with 2 runners on. But the Astros are in a bind if they don’t keep him in for awhile, because of the impact on the bullpen.

No respect for Lee’s arm from Durham.

Not that Lee’s defense commands a ton of respect… but that was a really iffy spot to try for a double.

by BTastros on May 14, 2008 10:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

lee had to barehand the ball...

so maybe it was hard for Durham to predict he could do that. But that decision was very damaging to the Giants’ position in this game.

Matsui’s or Ausmus’?

Matsui gets the last out..

so all that ends well…well,.. is well.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Possible blocked view of the ball

thanks to the second base umpire. As suggested by JD and Brownie. Seemed like a really easy play to make.. so I guess that’s plausible.

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

Just as a blunder relative to how standard the play is, I think Matsui’s is worse.

In terms of the effect on the game, Ausmus’s (err, Moehler’s?) was worse.

He still has the fire...

It’s times like these when you have to love the guy. He made up for his horse** earlier. But for the love of God, why can’t he just block the plate?

Bourn looks like he wants to swing at every pitch...

...based on his reaction to pitches when he doesn’t swing. Has been tipping his hand to other teams all year. Maybe he needs to change his reaction when he takes pitches.

by drsarc on May 14, 2008 11:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Matsui draws the walk.

Usually getting on base even though the batting average is just OK. That’s what I like to see. IF only we could get the same from Bourn.

Just reading through the game thread now after the fact...

Actually, it was reported that Lima had been cut by KIA Tigers but in fact, it was just a report and not confirmed. He never was cut and actually got his first win for KIA just last week. He may still get cut but he did get a win. How do I know this? Well, living here helps and living with a my wife and sis-in-laws who are all KIA fans helps things as well.

Chile Valverde shuts 'em down.

Two high fly balls to right field, one of the wall, one caught, but hey, it’s a win and no runs scored.

by entropic soul on May 15, 2008 12:22 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

And that makes...

10 saves (in 13 opportunities) for Valverde. Putting him on pace for ~40 saves, which would be much better than I feared early in the season.

No blown saves in May. Three blown saves in April, but we only lost one of those games. So Chile Valverde is only responsible for one loss this year. I’ll take that.
