The Houston Astros come into tonight's game with a 22-17 record and sit just 1 1/2 games out of 1st place in the NL central behind the 1st place Cubs(23-15) and the 2nd place Cardinals(23-17).  The Cubs face a struggling Padres team tonight at 7:05PM and the Cardinals face the Pirates at 7:15PM.  If things work out as I hope they do, the Astros could actually find themselves in 2nd place, just 1/2 a game back of the Cubs.

I'm sure most of you read Astros.com quite frequently, and if you don't... you should.  But in case you missed it, there is a pretty good mailbag by Alyson Footer this week.  Usually I think the questions asked range from ignorant to who cares, but this week... the questions are pretty good.  If you haven't checked it out, give it 2 minutes of your life and click this link.  The questions range from moving Bourn out of the starting lineup, to moving Jose Cruz Jr. off the roster.

I've got some bad news for those of you calling for Nieve to possibly get a chance in our rotation this year... it's not going to happen.  Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle reports that Nieve is being moved to the bullpen for the rest of the season.

Nieve, 25, has been diagnosed with a deviated septum, which along with his asthma and severe allergies has been making it hard for him to sleep at night. The lack of rest was making it difficult for him to pitch deep into games, too.

Nieve, who tossed two scoreless innings Sunday in his first relief appearance of the season, saw several specialists in Houston the first weekend of May and has been put on different medication. He will have to undergo surgery at the end of the season to repair the deviated septum, a common physical disorder of the nose.

Well, that's kind of a downer, but look on the bright side... at least they know what the problem is now and can hopefully alleviate it.  Maybe he'll have a chance of breaking the rotation next year.

Chipper Jones

Having another great day at the plate. Lance probably will not be overtaking the lead in batting average today.

Deviated Septum

Wait a minute!

Almost everybody has a deviated septum. I had one. It caused sinus problems. When doctor did surgery for the sinus, he did something to the septum too. Less than a week later I was okay.

Unless I miss something here, I don’t understand this waiting until theseason is over while Astros derail Nieve’s natural progression track.

Depends how serious it is

My dad had one that took months to recover from because of the scar tissue that formed and will probably need another surgery at some point in the future. There is a lot of factors that go into their decision and I’m sure they don’t want to have the surgery and realize that they might not get them back like they thought.

NL Central update

All teams are playing tonight. The Cubs, Cardinals and Brewers are currently losing. The Pirates and Reds are currently winning. Scores are only 1 or two runs apart, so this could easily change soon.

Nieve: some similarity to condition affecting Red Sox reliever Hansen.

They discussed this in one of the Red Sox games on ESPN. Craig Hansen was a top rated reliever prospect, compared at times to Brad Lidge, a couple of years ago. Then his performance went downhill. Sleep apnea was discovered to be the cause of his problems, since it left him exhausted. He had surgery to repair a deviated septum as well as remove his tonsils. This article says the surgeon also had to break his nose.

Supposedly pitching much better now.

Another save for Brad Lidge

3-0 Giants in the first

Hunter Pence in right caught three balls for the three outs.

Overall, a bad first inning.

OK, not a good start...

but lot’s of innings still to play and we got an offense this year…we’ll see what happens.

Wow not even close

The ump is freaking blind!!!

by saylinara on May 13, 2008 9:40 PM CDT   0 recs

Let's keep it close early,

but not wait until the 6th to get on the board.

by drsarc on May 13, 2008 9:48 PM CDT   0 recs

Cubs lose, Breweres win

Reds win also.
Pirates and Cards tied with 4 in the 8th.

EL CABALLO!!!

Rbi single scores Tejada.
Berkman on second, Lee on first.

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 10:02 PM CDT   0 recs

I really don't think Blum...

Should be batting behind Lee.

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 10:05 PM CDT   0 recs

i agree

Blum’s done a few nice things for us this year, but he’s a bench player. even trying to break up the righties, with the way Pence has been hitting, you really should bunch up your best bats in the middle of the lineup.

by littlevisigoth on May 13, 2008 10:08 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Exactly.

I understand the reasoning behind it. I just think Coop’s wrong here.

I know we don’t show up until the sixth, but come on, this is getting booooring.

by saylinara on May 13, 2008 10:46 PM CDT   0 recs

Good news

The Cards and Pirates took a game into the 10th with a 4-4 tie and now the Pirates blowing this game wide open. 8-4 currently.

at least we won’t fall in the standings.

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 11:11 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Here's hoping we can get something going...

I’m on the east coast, so staying up for these games is tough sometimes. We can make it totally worth it by grabbing a W on a bad night for the Cards.

by BTastros on May 13, 2008 11:00 PM CDT   0 recs

I dunno...

Bourn’s on base now, so the 7th looks good to me :)

by BTastros on May 13, 2008 11:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No runs.

No go. This is not looking good at all.
If we don’t score again, this will be the first time this month the Astros have scored less than 3 runs.

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 11:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Berkman

strikes out. :(
He should have got on base because Carlos Lee just hit a bomb.

4-2 Giants

Pence walks

with 2 outs. It’s up to Towles to do something, but don’t expect it. :p

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 11:19 PM CDT   0 recs

Towles strikes out.

Color me surprised.
That means it’s up to a pinch hitter, Bourn and Matsui. (or in otherwords, Matsui wth 2 outs)

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 11:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Oooh they did. Ouch.

Didn’t look like it on the first play. Knee to knee.

by saylinara on May 13, 2008 11:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I take it...

you didn’t see the replay.

by BTastros on May 13, 2008 11:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The first play was at odd angle

Looked like legs went around each other at first and they rolled. But the replays from the other angles showed crash crash boom.

by saylinara on May 13, 2008 11:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

oh, I know.

My first thought was that they didn’t actually collide but twisted funny or something to avoid it. Then I saw the replay, hehe.

by BTastros on May 13, 2008 11:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Luckily it wasn't David vs. Goliath

like last year. Anyone else and that might have been bad.

by saylinara on May 13, 2008 11:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bad collision

Matsui and Bourn. both men down

They both get up? Are they OK?

Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!

by SeoulStro on May 13, 2008 11:31 PM CDT   0 recs

Yeah they're both up

But both Brownie and JD say that they might not know the pain until tomorrow since adrenline is keeping them going for the moment.

by saylinara on May 13, 2008 11:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It wouldn't be that bad, actually.

Give Blum and Cheito (only because he did well last night) another day to play. At least it’s better options then year’s past where it’d be Bruntlett and Palmiero getting to play.

by saylinara on May 13, 2008 11:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Good to hear...Thanks

Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!

by SeoulStro on May 13, 2008 11:32 PM CDT   0 recs

Matsui looked okay running back

Pence looked like he was limping a little.

by saylinara on May 13, 2008 11:38 PM CDT   0 recs

Nice work by Wright...

to bounce back after starting out 3-0.

Rally time!

by BTastros on May 13, 2008 11:39 PM CDT   0 recs

It's a situation where we really need Bourn to do something.

But I really expect Matsui to come up with 2 outs. I hope I’m wrong though.

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 11:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bourn strikes out.

2 outs. And Matsui is up. As expected.

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 11:44 PM CDT   0 recs

well, that sucked...

I really want to see Bourn start hitting but he is killing us with his bat…

Oh well, let’s hope we can notch a win tomorrow! Thanks for the PBP.

Astros lose

Oh well. Can’t win them all. But we can win tomorrow’s game, imo.

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 11:52 PM CDT   0 recs

Tonight

We really need to win tonight (Wednesday) to ensure a split in this series. Lincecum vs. Sampson is a much less favorable matchup. Get at least a split in SF and at least one in Arlington and we’ll have a nice winning road trip for the first time this year.

Last west coast night game of the season!

by littlevisigoth on May 14, 2008 1:37 PM CDT   0 recs

Agree.

I think it can be done, though. (The split)

by entropic soul on May 14, 2008 4:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm not completely sold on Brian Moehler repeating,,,

the kind of performance he gave Friday. The good thing is that he is facing a relatively weak offensive team in a big ballpark. But I am concerned that Moehler is a lot more hittable than he showed in his previous start. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised.
