You can find an excellent series preview by Entropic Soul here

On Monday, Berkman was named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending May 11. The 32-year-old led the Majors with a gaudy .682 (15-for-22) batting average and a 1.136 slugging percentage on his way to winning the weekly honors for the second time this season and fourth in his career. Berkman is the only player so far in 2008 to win the award twice.

What a surprise...  The way he's playing right now, I wouldn't be surprised if they just named the award after him.

Chipper Jones

Had a decent enough day today, boosting his batting average from .400 to .406. Doesn’t look like Lance will be taking the lead there tonight.

At some point

They’re gonna ask Roy what he would have done if he wasn’t a baseball player. I’ll keep you updated. :P

how’d he look in the first?

Alright, I suppose

He doesn’t “feel” like Roy when you watch him, but that still makes him 90% better then all the other pitchers still.

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting

I wonder if he’ll return to his old ways. I might have to buy a Shawn Chacon jersey.

I think Roy got so frustrated

last year trying to carry the weight of the entire starting pitching staff that he hasn’t come back mentally yet. But luckily we don’t have a shitty starting rotation this year so it hasn’t hurt us too bad.

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm still not as comfortable with this team as a whole.

I’m enjoying the season so far, but there’s so many new faces it’s just a whole lot different than previous years. I’m trying to make sure I watch every game possible to get accustom to the new players. The bullpen’s the biggest question mark for me. I barely feel like I know any of ‘em haha. Too bad Extra Innings likes to black out every game of every team from Arizona over.

Lucky

I’ve been too busy doing the college thing to catch too many of the Spring games, but I try to read the synopsis’ every week or so. My favorite’s have always been Lance (named my cat after him, lol), Wandy, and Backe, so as long as they’re there, I’m happy with the team. I don’t know what I’d do if I lost any of those three though…

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

I was a huge Bagwell and Biggio fan. Same thing with Wagner, Dotel and Lidge. You just move on. As for the whole college thing. I’m in the same spot haha and between the Sixers playoff run and the beginning of the Astros season my schoolwork has been put on the back-burner. What college you go to man?

If Cruz wasn't a left-handed bat off the bench

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There might be a desperate enough team

out there for the final month push, especially if the wildcard gets as crazy as last year.

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It would take a lot...

and it’d have to be a veteran team. You can’t have Bonds on a team of young players. The media circus would be a lot for them.

Plus, he’d have to DH. His knees can’t handle the field anymore.

Yes, I am a nerd.

by TexSkins on May 12, 2008 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yanks or Bo-Sox, maybe

They can handle the media storm and they’re known to play kind of dirty, especially if it’s a war between the two.

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wasn't thinking in terms of players

Just big media circus, kind of veteran teams that would take a chance. That would have a DH.

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True.

Detroit maybe.

I’d love to see him and Ozzie go at it in Chicago.

Yes, I am a nerd.

by TexSkins on May 12, 2008 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And maybe the Orioles

if they had a chance at winning the East. But other then that, I can’t think of any would might be able to survive that storm.

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Baltimore might be too young...

other than the ex-Astros (Scott, Huff) there aren’t too many vets.

Millar and Roberts don’t seem to me to be enough to offset the Bonds factor.

Yes, I am a nerd.

by TexSkins on May 12, 2008 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But they play in a fairly media magnet anyways

Especially if they were doing well. Bonds might not be as big as a deal as possibly beating BoSox/Yanks, at least on a local level.

with the bases loaded? Particularly when the 1B is way off the bag?

I just don’t see how that ever works.

by BTastros on May 12, 2008 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe if the 1B was on the bag

They might be able to catch the runner lollygaggin’ if he’s close to the bag but not on it and the head not fully in the game to react in time since it was scrub hitters coming up, but the pitcher and the 1B wasn’t on the same page AT ALL.

Hopefully

gameday shows it.

I'm waiting to see.

The radio guys were laughing.

by TexSkins on May 12, 2008 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pickoff was thrown and the first baseman

was nowhere near the ball and actually the second baseman got to it first and then threw home wildly to try to keep the second guy from scoring and the ball bounced off some pole by the dugout and ended up near the pitchers mound.

Let me add my thoughts.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

by BTastros on May 12, 2008 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

WOW

Giants just threw the game away, literally. LOL

by entropic soul on May 12, 2008 11:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Gameday will probably throw up a highlight

In a minute since two runs scored on the “play”

by entropic soul on May 12, 2008 11:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

7-3.

Roy still in. Bourn in C, Cruz to LF. Lee getting some rest.

Yes, I am a nerd.

by TexSkins on May 12, 2008 11:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Thank goodness

Bourn was in center on that play.

Oh yeah

The one thing I’ve noticed about Cooper this year is that he seems to get the right guy in on the play at the right time. Timing that Garner NEVER got a hang of.

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let Roy stay in!

I need the CG!

Yes, I am a nerd.

by TexSkins on May 12, 2008 11:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He's at about 110 pitches.

If I were Coop, I’d go ahead and let him start the 9th, considering we are ahead by 4. I’d probably have him on a short leash, of course.

by entropic soul on May 12, 2008 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

With the amount of rest Roy has been getting...

....in between the last several innings, he could take this all the way. Should take this all the way.

by drsarc on May 12, 2008 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

3, 4, and 5 coming up...

something that probably works against him.

Yes, I am a nerd.

by TexSkins on May 12, 2008 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hilarity...

...we might let Miguel pitch the 9th the way the Giants are fielding right now.

by drsarc on May 12, 2008 11:47 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

how did they score it?

I could see it being a hit; I think Pence was going to beat the throw.

by BTastros on May 12, 2008 11:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You know the announcers are getting bored

when they focus on the birds sitting on the stadium and not the game.

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 11:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Not a boring game

But when the Giants kind of checked out when Zito did, I can see how they’d be bored at the moment.

by saylinara on May 12, 2008 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pence...

is really looking great out there.

He’s laying off the really bad pitches, and he’s reaching pitches low and outside but in the zone.

by BTastros on May 12, 2008 11:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The scouts will see that...

he’ll start getting busted in on the hands soon.

Yes, I am a nerd.

by TexSkins on May 12, 2008 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure...

It’s all about making adjustments over time. I’m just glad that our worst fear-that he would always strike out on that slider-has proven untrue, and relatively quickly.

by BTastros on May 12, 2008 11:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

that’s what I meant. He made the adjustment rather quickly, even though he was in a slump. That’s a real good sign.

Yes, I am a nerd.

.300 is coming

I’m telling you.

by drsarc on May 12, 2008 11:52 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Geary...

making it a little more interesting than I’d like.

Here’s come Jose.

by BTastros on May 13, 2008 12:01 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Valverde coming in for the save

Score still 7-3. 2 outs, men on first and 2nd.

by entropic soul on May 13, 2008 12:02 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

+5 pts for my fantasy team...

or +3.. can’t remember how much a save is worth. :p

PUMA

Valverde gets it done.

Giants leave bases loaded

to end the game. The game was tighter at the end than I wantred. But Astros win.

Player of the game...

anyone nominate anyone besides Berkman?

Cheito? Roy?

Yes, I am a nerd.

by TexSkins on May 13, 2008 12:07 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Roy gets for

a) keeping his composure after giving up 3
b) staying the course through the 8th

by drsarc on May 13, 2008 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know

Berkman was the only one who could hit the homer, he played Zito like a fiddle.

TV’s picking Cheito though.

1.5 games behind Cubs tthough.

Cubs took over 1st place. So sttill same distance behind 1st.

22-17

5 games over .500. 4 game win streak (which means starting the 10 game road trip 4-0.) Won 9 of the last 10.

3rd in the division and, as Joe pointed out, 1/2 game behind the Cards (tied in the loss column.)

Not too bad.

Yes, I am a nerd.

damn. I feel asleep and the Astros were behind...

with Zito dealilng….then, I wake up and Valverde is coming in for the save. So, I missed a lot. But, as ffor the Astros with anotherr come from behind win….all I can say is WOW!!!

and they just showed Astros highlights, but failed to show the pickoff play. Ridiculous.
