On Monday, Berkman was named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending May 11. The 32-year-old led the Majors with a gaudy .682 (15-for-22) batting average and a 1.136 slugging percentage on his way to winning the weekly honors for the second time this season and fourth in his career. Berkman is the only player so far in 2008 to win the award twice.
What a surprise... The way he's playing right now, I wouldn't be surprised if they just named the award after him.

bling bling both of them at the same time? That to go with his Lucasi boots that Im sure he has 20 pairs of by now.

Chipper Jones
Had a decent enough day today, boosting his batting average from .400 to .406. Doesn’t look like Lance will be taking the lead there tonight.
Hey guys!!!
Luckily my semester’s over and I’m hanging out at home for a few days… so I finally get to watch my ‘stros!!!
All the San Fran games are blacked out for me
inside information only the broadcast could give you would be appreciated :)
Bourn to Run!
At some point
They’re gonna ask Roy what he would have done if he wasn’t a baseball player. I’ll keep you updated. :P
Alright, I suppose
He doesn’t “feel” like Roy when you watch him, but that still makes him 90% better then all the other pitchers still.
Interesting
I wonder if he’ll return to his old ways. I might have to buy a Shawn Chacon jersey.
Bourn to Run!
I think Roy got so frustrated
last year trying to carry the weight of the entire starting pitching staff that he hasn’t come back mentally yet. But luckily we don’t have a shitty starting rotation this year so it hasn’t hurt us too bad.
I'm still not as comfortable with this team as a whole.
I’m enjoying the season so far, but there’s so many new faces it’s just a whole lot different than previous years. I’m trying to make sure I watch every game possible to get accustom to the new players. The bullpen’s the biggest question mark for me. I barely feel like I know any of ‘em haha. Too bad Extra Innings likes to black out every game of every team from Arizona over.
Bourn to Run!
Lucky
I’ve been too busy doing the college thing to catch too many of the Spring games, but I try to read the synopsis’ every week or so. My favorite’s have always been Lance (named my cat after him, lol), Wandy, and Backe, so as long as they’re there, I’m happy with the team. I don’t know what I’d do if I lost any of those three though…
Exactly
I was a huge Bagwell and Biggio fan. Same thing with Wagner, Dotel and Lidge. You just move on. As for the whole college thing. I’m in the same spot haha and between the Sixers playoff run and the beginning of the Astros season my schoolwork has been put on the back-burner. What college you go to man?
Bourn to Run!
Woman, and Texas A&M
Well, yeah, I’d find new favorites, I always have and always will as long as they wear the Astros uniform, but I don’t wanna hafta, lol.
Don't talk bad about Aggie Women
I know at least one more CFB blogger is an Aggie Girl :)
Go 'Stros!
Heh it doesn't bother me
More of a clarification than anything.
And it was like that during the '05 WS run
Very nearly failed out that semester because I spent all of fall back in Houston watching the playoff run since my dad is obsessed as I am and would always get tickets to the games.
Just as soon as I type it...
radio guys talk about how he’s keeping the ball down and not missing up with his overpowering 84 mph heater.
Yes, I am a nerd.
Yeah I know
I was expecting to see a 5-0 or 6-0 score now in favor of us with all the pundits lapping at the Roy-Zito matchup, but as long as Berkman’s hitting I’m happy.
Hey, I'm one of those pundits
You better watch it. :p

Wasn't exactly helped by the defense
Wigginton should have gloved that ball and possibly could have gotten the out at 1st…
Cruz Jr just looked terrible on that dive as well…. With Wiggy gloving that and Bourn in CF, this is probably still a tied game.
Go 'Stros!
Good to know.
Since I can’t watch.

Jose Cruz Jr
look slow, awkward and out of his element on that terrible attempt in center. Bourn would have had that standing.

If Cruz wasn't a left-handed bat off the bench
....he would have been put out to pasture by now. Wouldn’t surprise if it happened soon since Erstad is playing so well. I wonder how the front-office deals with that dilemma with Jose Sr. being such an institution in Houston.
Well he is only
like 1-5 in this ballpark.
Roy O
is wild (and just got hammerd for a homerun)

Right
It’s possible someone could pick him up before playoffs, but i don’t know if anyone would.
There might be a desperate enough team
out there for the final month push, especially if the wildcard gets as crazy as last year.
It would take a lot...
and it’d have to be a veteran team. You can’t have Bonds on a team of young players. The media circus would be a lot for them.
Plus, he’d have to DH. His knees can’t handle the field anymore.
Yes, I am a nerd.
Yanks or Bo-Sox, maybe
They can handle the media storm and they’re known to play kind of dirty, especially if it’s a war between the two.
Wasn't thinking in terms of players
Just big media circus, kind of veteran teams that would take a chance. That would have a DH.
And maybe the Orioles
if they had a chance at winning the East. But other then that, I can’t think of any would might be able to survive that storm.
Baltimore might be too young...
other than the ex-Astros (Scott, Huff) there aren’t too many vets.
Millar and Roberts don’t seem to me to be enough to offset the Bonds factor.
Yes, I am a nerd.
But they play in a fairly media magnet anyways
Especially if they were doing well. Bonds might not be as big as a deal as possibly beating BoSox/Yanks, at least on a local level.
Jsams
Agreed – If you would have told me we would get the best pitching production from our 3rd through 5th pitchers 40 games in, I would have thought we had collectively gone crazy.
Can't wait till Wandy gets back
even though B-Mo was lights out in his place.

Astros hitters are wasting at bats
Zito’s control is lacking somewhat. They could be drawing a lot more walks, imo.
Tejada..
...looking good in the field. There are positives out there tonight – few and far between, but still a glimmer of hope.
Here we go....
West Coast games don’t start until the 6th. He has looked more comfortable from the right side than ever in his career, IMO.
Zito won't get his first win toniht
He probably won’t finish this inning

They're letting Roy hit?
Guess who doesn’t trust their bullpen in the 7th!!
If the PH hit a home run or single or something
Then Roy would have his W until Walwerde comes up at least
True...
but this way he gets another 2 innings for the Stros to score and still get a win.
Yes, I am a nerd.
Ya, not sure about that.
It’d be a no-brainer if Roy was ROY, but he’s struggling.

Holy Cruz
That’s another hit and an RBI. They must of told him he had to play for his paycheck tonight.
I'll stand up there with a bat
for veteran league minimum and I’ll do it in whatever uniform they want to put me in AND I’ll stand on my head.
Geography, actually.
And I sell a lot of pizza in my down time. (I’m a manager at an on-campus pizza place.)
It pays good though.
More then I ever thought I’d make at college.
I only made it
Through two years of completely busting my ass. But the bills don’t wait forever and I’m trying to graduate debt-free.
Almost there
Only a few more semesters. Should have graduated this May, but things came up that kept pushing it back. How much longer do you have?
All I'm saying - compare it to Zito's payday....
...I’d shake like a coconut on a tree for league minimum
Cruz...
comes through. Either he was told this was his last chance, or he’s just comfortable in his old home.
Second hit for Cruz
with an RBI this time.
You know that Giants pitcher is done for the night.
but good for Jose Cruz, Jr. He needed this; and in front of the Giants fans, where he played a few seasons.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Pause.
HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
strangest pickoff attempt
Runner is barely off the bag, and closer than the 1B. Pitcher kind of tries to signal to the 1B that he’s going to throw to 1st… and then just does it. It was hilarious.
Yabu and Velez..
Gonna get their asses chewed out tonight. :p
by entropic soul on May 12, 2008 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Has anyone ever seen a pickoff play at 1st..
with the bases loaded? Particularly when the 1B is way off the bag?
I just don’t see how that ever works.
Maybe if the 1B was on the bag
They might be able to catch the runner lollygaggin’ if he’s close to the bag but not on it and the head not fully in the game to react in time since it was scrub hitters coming up, but the pitcher and the 1B wasn’t on the same page AT ALL.
Hopefully
gameday shows it.

Pickoff was thrown and the first baseman
was nowhere near the ball and actually the second baseman got to it first and then threw home wildly to try to keep the second guy from scoring and the ball bounced off some pole by the dugout and ended up near the pitchers mound.
I like the Astros chances in this game.

With the amount of rest Roy has been getting...
....in between the last several innings, he could take this all the way. Should take this all the way.
You know the announcers are getting bored

I wouldn't cal it a boring game at all.
But the birds are just funny.

Not a boring game
But when the Giants kind of checked out when Zito did, I can see how they’d be bored at the moment.
Pence...
is really looking great out there.
He’s laying off the really bad pitches, and he’s reaching pitches low and outside but in the zone.
Sure...
It’s all about making adjustments over time. I’m just glad that our worst fear-that he would always strike out on that slider-has proven untrue, and relatively quickly.
I know what I'm watching tonight
