Chacon's MLB Record
I'm kinda playing with the words there, after Chacon tied a MLB record when he got his eighth straight no-decision to start the year, tying Dick Stigman's 1965 Twins start. In case you're wondering, the MLB record for mostconsecuative no-decisions is 10 by Randy Lurch in 1977 for the Phillies. (A big ol' hat tip to Jim McLennan over at AZ Snakepit for the learning and for getting me to look up some of this stuff.)
This streak is kinda funny. The Astros are 4-4 when Chacon starts. He has a 3.53 ERA and has gone 5+ in every game. Before today, the Astros had scored 30 runs in game he started. His 35:23 K:BB ratio isn't great and his 47 hits allowed isn't eye popping. His WHIP coming into today was 1.38, which is down from his career WHIP of 1.50... but not significantly down. Same for his BAA (.244 coming in, .260 for his career.) Moral of the story: Chacon has been good, but not anything that much idfferent than his numbers coming in would suggest.
Now, if I told you in ST that in his first 8 games Chacon would go 4-4 with a 3.53 ERA and 5+ innings in all 8 starts, how many of you would have taken it? Baseball is a funny game sometimes.

the no decisions are just bad luck.
It happens to pitchers sometimes; someone here or on another board compared this to some of the terrible luck (in terms of run support) that Nolan Ryan experienced with the Astros. Chacon has given the Astros more than a fair chance to win all his starts, which is all anybody wanted.
All of Chacon’s 08 numbers are better than his career pitching stats, including peripherals, across the board: (career in parentheses)
K/9 6.18 (6.10); BB/9 4.06 (4.64); K/BB 1.52 (1.32); WHIP 1.37 (1.50); FIP 4.52 (5.13).
I have been impressed that Chacon has a wider repertoire of pitches than I expected, and he has been showing some knowledge of the art of pitching.
When Chacon was signed, many on this board said we would be thrilled if he replicated his 2005 season, when he was acquired by the Yankees mid-season and helped get them into the post-season.
Chacon’s pitching stats so far are comparable or better than his 2005 season: (2005 in parentheses)
ERA 3.53 (3.44); k/9 6.18 (4.59); k/BB 1.52 (1.20); WHIP 1.37 (1.33); FIP 4.52 (4.76).

I would say...
...that signing Chacon has been a success. Props for his numbers so far. We all know that wins/losses are the worst pitcher’s stat EVER…...
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.

And he has been very lucky
In the last two games at least, he has been down when he left and the bats came back and took him off the hook, essentially preserving his 0-0 record rather than letting him get the loss that he pitched.
