St. Louis Cardinals @ Houston Astros

Current game

St. Louis Cardinals Red-star
@ Houston Astros Red-star

Wednesday, Apr 9, 2008, 7:05 PM CDT
Minute Maid Park

Braden Looper (1-0, 1.50) vs Chris Sampson (0-0, 2.70)

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing out to left field at 5-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 80.

Last time out, Chris Sampson went 6 2/3 innings and gave up just 2 runs in an Astros 4-3 win against the Padres.  Looper for the Cardinals went 6 innings and gave up just 1 run earning his 1st win of the season.

Sampson has been fighting the flu for a few days but says there is no way he isn't starting in tonight's game.  But just to be sure, he took a visit to the doctor on Tuesday and was given multiple shots to help fight it off.  Hopefully the ill effects of the flu will not hinder Sampson today as he looks to right the ship for the Astros and help them win their 1st series of the year.

In other news, the Astros could have 2 of their starters back in the lineup by the end of the week.  Kaz Matsui (who has yet to make a start for the Astros), went 1-3 with a double in his 1st minor league rehab start in Corpus.  The Astros expect him to make 2-3 more minor league appearances and then possibly return by the end of the upcoming Florida series.  If not, then he will for sure be back for the Phillies series starting on Tuesday.  Wigginton is hoping he'll be able to stay off the disabled list and will test his broken thumb tomorrow.  If he can show that he is able to grip a bat and field his position, the Astros will keep him off the DL.  Otherwise, he'll go on the DL and the Astros will pull someone up to fill in until he is competely healed.

3-6 record so far

All the way at the bottom of th standings...
On that note, we've played more games than all of the other NL Central teams so far.

No PBP for me tonight

I might be able to hop in every once in awhile and say hey, butI doubt I'll be here very much.. prior engagements got me tonight..

Good luck!

Meh, what a weak hit

Bounced off the plate and then over Sampson who got good air to try and reach it... ball probably bounced 12 foot in the air over Sampon's head.

Sample of "Country Joe West" incoming

Or so I have been told by JD/Brownie.

Brownie says that Backe and Pujols almost got in a fight before the game? I don't like Backe's chances there.

Sample of Joe West... not very impressive in my opinion.

Interesting...

Especially LaRussa's comment

by entropic soul on Apr 9, 2008 7:17 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yea..

he's a jackass...

I think Pujols wasn't really out of line with the slide(maybe a little too far inside), but him calling the club house and saying he's sorry was big of him and should have ended it.. if Backe started something with him today, then that's his bad.

by Stros Bro on Apr 9, 2008 7:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i disagree

I think Pujols slide was pretty blatantly to take out Towles and unnecessary. Calling up later to apologize is the bare minimum, but it seems like LaRussa's Cardinals are always involved in dirty stuff like this, but they don't get called on it. If Backe wants to stand up for his teammate and let Pujols know about it, I'm all for it.

If you see the video of Glaus two-run double at this link, the third replay makes it clear how unnecessary it was.

Maybe you're right

After watching it again, it did look further inside than I originally remembered.. so I'll take back my previous statement and agree with yours here...

Backe evidently made a comment to Pujols about the slide that Pujols did to Towles last night...

My20HD is the worst ever

This ain't HD, man. It's just a widescreen version of the regular feed. Or at least it looks like that to me.

I guess I'm lucky that

Im' watching this on a 16" TV then :)

is fine by me. Since I've never seen a game in HD I'm happy with a picture (and a few years ago I was excited about audio)

Astros fan for life

Oh man

HD (especially on fox) is awesome! I would love to see the quality of an HD Game on fox with JD and Brownie announcing.. that would be Astros baseball heaven.

I'm saying this inning

I have a good feeling about what we can do to Braden Looper.

Ground out to Berkman

Who fielded and tagged 1st?

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 9, 2008 7:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Or the line drive to left?

Line to left that Pujols fielded, runner on 2nd went to 3rd and then went home, throw came in and was cut off by Sampson and then tossed to 3rd to get the runner who was coming from 1st to 3rd out. Runner still scored.

It took me a while...

to find a radio broadcast. But I'm here now and not liking the score.

by TexSkins on Apr 9, 2008 7:39 PM CDT   0 recs

After the Glaus hit...

5 straight out... 4 groundballs.

Radio guys talking about the sinker maybe working now.

by TexSkins on Apr 9, 2008 7:48 PM CDT   0 recs

As soon as I say that...

Sampson goes 3-0 on Duncan.

by TexSkins on Apr 9, 2008 7:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Duncan walks...

Sampson's first walk of the year.

I can hear the crowd boo Pujols even while Towles is visitng the mound.

by TexSkins on Apr 9, 2008 7:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sampson goes 2-0 to Pujols...

Milo gives Blum a blue star as he gets Pujols.

Anyone watching jump in... the talk about how it hits the base and he still gets him.

by TexSkins on Apr 9, 2008 7:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Make that 2 blue stars...

the second was delayed by Milo.

by TexSkins on Apr 9, 2008 7:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

NICE PLAY BY BLUM!

Wow... Looked simple but damn that took some skill... Pujols his a bouncing grounder down the 3rd base line, on the last bounce it hits the 3rd base sack and flattens out completely and goes into foul territory.. Blum picks it up and fires from foul territory and gets Pujols by 1/2 a step.

It won't make top 10 of the day or anything

because it didn't look really flashy or anything... but on the skill toughness scale, that was one fo the toughest you'll see in my opinion.

The radio guys talking about...

how Sampson looks bad. Not just his pitching... but he just looks bad in general. Comments?

And what happened to the engagement? Get "sick" and have to stay home?

by TexSkins on Apr 9, 2008 7:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He just looks tired

He looked tired before his 1st pitch... He just doens't have great stuff... He has ok control, just not a lot on the fastball and the breaking balls are just there..

by entropic soul on Apr 9, 2008 7:55 PM CDT   0 recs

Milo say 54 pitches...

the other guy (Dave?) saying that Moehler needs the work anyway (hasn't pitched since San Diego.)

PH for Sampson in the 3rd?

by TexSkins on Apr 9, 2008 7:56 PM CDT   0 recs

They asked Chacon, tell us something that nobody knows about you

He says he was born in Alaska.. I say, no everybody knows that(because they talked about it during his last outing) and my wife says "I didn't know that" and I said, do you even know what team he plays for? She says "The Cardinals, since that is who we are playing..." I really need her to pay more attention to the Astros.

Q

They said Quintero reported to Round Rock. That surprises the heck out of me. First,, that he wasn't claimed on waivers. And second that he decided to report to Round Rock instead of signing with a system that needs catchers at the big league level. Maybe he wasn't as highly thought of by other teams as I thought.

by clack on Apr 9, 2008 7:58 PM CDT   0 recs

share your surprise

I'm glad he's around. If this is Brad's last year, he seems like a good backup for next year.

by lnewcomer on Apr 9, 2008 7:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe he realizes that...

the Astros pretty much have no real catching prospects to speak of and he's a lock to make the big league team next year. Or maybe he just really likes the area. :p

Then Milo breaks it and I guess he struck out? Poor timing Milo.

Nope, Sampson batting.

by TexSkins on Apr 9, 2008 8:00 PM CDT   0 recs

Sampson grounds out...

then Bourn flies to center out on the first pitch. Way to give your sick pitcher some time in the dugout.

Did anyone else notice that Sampson looked like he was about to vomit at the plate? He's pale and just does not look well. They need to pull him the first chance they get.

at least he didn't strike out.

1 out for Lance.

An update...

I'm not on top of things tonight. Sorry for the shaky (if not, non-existant) PBP.

Moehler is on. Pujols up with Schumaker on 3rd and 1 out.

3-0 STL right now.

moves Tejada to 3rd. A well hit ball caught by Duncan at the wall. Apparently, Duncan made the play in spite of himself.

1 out for Loretta. "Situational hitting" here.
