Houston Astros at Arizona Diamondbacks, Apr 30, 2008 2:40 PM CDT
Your Houston Astros send Shawn Chacon to the hill against Randy Johnson in an attempt to earn Chacon his 1st win of the season. Chacon has pitched brilliantly in his 5 outings this season giving up no more than 3 runs in any outing. His ERA currently sits at 2.45 after giving up just 1 earned run through 7 innings against the Cardinals on 4/25/08. Unfortunately, he still sits with out a decision.
The Snakes send Randy Johnson to face Chacon. Johnson has made just 3 starts and brings a .270 ERA to the table. Johnson is coming back from back surgery and looks to still be able to pitch.

Bourn sitting
and Coop is trying Pence in the leadoff spot. early returns are good as Pence leads off the game with a sharp groundball single through the gap on the left side.

Matsui goes down swinging
hopefully he can regain some of his earlier mojo being back in the two-hole.
Tejada follows with a single up the middle. Pence stops at 2nd.
Berkman jumps on the first pitch and goes the other way, plating Pence. Tejada to 3rd.

does that mean
Bourn’s groin is bothering him again?

missed an explanation
thought it might be cause he was struggling.

quotes i've read/heard
from Coop made it sound like he wanted to sit Pence a bit, cause he was struggling yet that he wanted to get Cruz some AB’s cause he was struggling. don’t know if any of that logic pertains to Bourn, or if his groin is barking at him again.
by littlevisigoth on Apr 30, 2008 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the main reason...
Bourn is out is because he parttcularly struggles against LHP. However, Cooper has expressed some frustration with Bourn’s bat. Pence is in the lineup because he hits well against lefties. JD mentioned that Pence’s mechaniical problems only arise against RHP.

the other day
I heard a called on 740 blame the hitters woes on Coop and his constant changing line-ups. At the time I thought he was just a disgruntled fan. BUT Coop does seem to tinker with the line up quite a bit. As long as the order of the day works on the day, I guess you can’t question the manager…well, you can.

i’m watching it.. i have to say, i love the music they are playing for tejada now..i think it’s hilarious… and that little montage of him doing his ‘dancing excercises’ ... just hilarious… and now it’s 1-0 on a berkman double to right-center.

i’m guessing the same things that annoy the crap out of me about Byrnes are things that cause Arizona fans to like him. man, i can’t stand that guy. year of the stache? really? ESPN hit a new low when they gave that kid a microphone, and that’s saying something.

well...
I think virtually guaranteeing that Tejada and/or Berkman get to hit with RISP and no double play is a positive move. Matsui has been struggling a little lately, too.
If there’s a point in the batting order where bunting to advance runners seems right, it’s with the 3 and 4 batters coming up and runners on 1st and 2nd.

maybe not
we’ll get Matsui, Tejada, and Berkman in the 9th though, and Ryan isn’t exactly a lights out closer.

were conserving relievers today. That strategy changed it seems.

An injury to Brocail means
yet another reliever. Brocail stays in. Saves a reliever, for now.

gotta think Moehler or Borkowski
will be DFA’d when Wiggy comes back. Borks’ ERA was at least good coming into today, but as pointed out, it’s only been good in mop-up duty.

-.454 will not get it done, Bork.
-.154 from Chacon wasn’t much better. He looked very off today.
Brocail (.072) and WW (.029) were, again, solid.

CFBers,
I just wanted to say thanks a lot for letting me talk about your team a little while we played you. You’ve been more than hospitable, and I hope the 3 of you (or so) who also posted at the ‘Pit will feel welcome to return.
Now, GO KICK THE BREW CREW’S ASS!!
