a thought
Maybe add Wheeler to the list? And I know he wasn't an Astro for long, but he pitched well for us and is 2-0 this season for Baltimore, so I'd be kinda interested to see what Sarfate is up to. Although that might just invoke ill will that we let him go.

Luuu-uuu-ke!
Yeah, Luke's smiling face was on mlb.com as the batting avg. leader today (Tues.). Since then, he's homered & doubled off Jason Lardbutt Jennings, putting his avg. well up above .500. There's feature piece on him on the O's website as well.
Meanwhile, Hunter Pence ... oh, strike that.

was a beast for us and he was the piece that I was most upset about losing. I think he'll have a nice career, but if Tejada keeps doing the things he did last night it doesn't matter.

Luke Scott
I never will understand why Luke Scott was not given a chance to play more often with the Astros. I'm happy he is doing so well.
I also miss Qualls, and am happy Brad Lidge bounced back from last season and this year's injury.
Jason Jennings I don't miss.

Luke should have had at least 40-50 games starting at the start of last season befroe the Astros gave up on him... unfortunately, it seems they never even gave him a chance.
I think of all of our BP losses from last season, I'll miss Qualls the most. He was probably the one Astros reliever that I never thought before his outing start, that he would give up the lead. Not saying he never did.. but I had faith in him.

I wouldn't say that we "gave up on" Luke Scott as much as we traded him away for a better hitter (granted along with some other dudes). What we got in return was well worth giving up a guy that most people knew could hit.
I will grant you that, while here, he didn't play as much as he should have.

I wouldn't go as far
to say that Tejada is a better hitter than Scott. If I had to bet right now I would take Scott to have a higher OPS at the end of the season. Overall you have to give the edge to Tejada as being much more valuable because he plays a premium position.
Scott will K more but draw more walks. Tejada will get more hits but Scott has more power. I think they are both very well suited to hit 5th and drive in a bunch of runs. Another huge difference is durability, as Tejada is known as an iron man over his career and Scott has had some pretty significant leg problems throughout his career.
My first mistake was assuming you knew what I was talking about.

Tejada
Part of Tejada’s value is that he puts up numbers from the SS position. Theoretically, this would allow the team to put another good bat in the OF. The real downside to the trade is the loss of three good pitchers.

From an Orioles perespective
we are very happy with Luke Scott. The guy has a great stroke and so far has offered the best return in the Tejada trade for us. He’s contributed to our team chemistry and made our lineup alot more lethal. He’s just a little rough in left field, but which left fielder isn’t, and besides, if we can trade Aubrey Huff (another ex-Astro), he’ll pretty much be our everyday DH, as he’s kind of blocking our left fielder of the future, Nolan Reimold.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Everett having another tough year
not only at the plate, but in the field. Today's Hardball Times rankings list him at 23rd of 27 major league shortstops in fielding percentage. Everett is no longer starting every game. Utility infielder Matt Tolbert, batting .400, has been the starting shortstop in several games.

More bad news for Everett
According to Yahoo Sports:
Adam Everett doesn’t know exactly when or how it happened, but he woke up a week ago with a nagging soreness in his throwing shoulder. After Monday’s game, manager Ron Gardenhire decided Everett’s pain was hurting the team, too. Gardenhire cited three different instances of throws not made adequately in Monday’s game, in explaining why he has asked Everett to submit to an examination by Minnesota’s team doctors Wednesday. The worst mistake was a throwing error that helped trigger a six-run Tiger rally, but Gardenhire said he had suspected Everett was hurting even before that.

Look at Luke Scott Go!
Starting off pretty good.. hopefully he keeps it up.
Kind of weird that Qualls has a loss, but also has a 0.00 ERA on the season.
Jennings is stinking it up… as usual.
Albers had his 1st start of the season… decent outing; 5 innings, 5 hits and 1 earned run against… earned the win as well.

Yeah.
On Monday, Randy Johnson had his first start of the year, and gave up 3 unearned runs to the Giants. Later, Qualls gave up 2 more unearned runs. We ended up losing 5-4—without giving up an earned run, and Qualls got charged with the loss.
Our young guys had a really rough time at Phone Company Park. Our defense was ATROCIOUS during that game, not to mention Mark Reynolds trying to catch a foul ball and falling headfirst into an 8 foot photographer’s well onto concrete.

Except for Ensberg and Scott....
those are some ugly numbers for the hitters. The pitching numbers are quite good, though. It’s interesting that Albers has performed so well in the bullpen. I always wondered if he could become another Qualls—-he has similar stuff. But Albers never seemed reliable when the Astros used him in the bullpen. I guess that is just he nature of young players.

Last night...
Bruntlett saved an imploding Lidge with a great play to rob Beltran of a hit (and possibly a game-tying RBI) in the 9th. Lidge gets the save even though he allowed a walk and an infield hit (he knocked down what could have been a DP ball.)

not just you
i always thought that as good as everett was on defense, bruntlett was maybe not as good but close enough that i would totally rather have his offense and his defense over everett’s.
bruntlett could also provide the flexibility/utility that AE could not, thus being able to play every day in various positions, if given a chance. in any case, i hope he gets more of a chance when rollins comes back, because he deserves it.
that said, anyone see burke’s misplay at SS the other day? whoa.

Bruntlett
I think most people on this board have a lot of respect for Bruntlett’s defensive ability. I think he is a great utility player. But he is a better defensive player at 2b than SS, IMO. I have heard that Bruntlett has gotten booed in Philly and I’m sorry to hear that; I’m sure he doesn’t deserve it. He got off to a bad start with a critical error early in the season, and some Philly fans hate his bat. I think it may take awhile, but if they see him play long enough, the Philadelphia fans may come around.
I didn’t see Burke’s misplay, but that doesn’t surprise me when he is playing shortstop. Burke had a tendency to make some bad plays at that position. I wonder what Burke looks like when he plays third base? He has a weak arm (the reason he was moved from shortstop after he was drafted) and that would seem to be a bigger problem at 3d.

Lidge....
may be one of the few closers who is spotless. Closers are having problems all over the place. I noticed in the Brewers/Cardinals game yesterday that Gagne blew a save in the 9th and Isringhausen lost the game in extra innings. Corpas, with the Rockies, blew a save last night, and that is one of many bad outings for him. Hoffman lost the Padres’ game last night, and he has been having problems.

Lidge is still flawless going 6-6 in save ops without allowing an earned run. Wish we could say that for our closer.
Scott is still hitting well at a .324 average… will he keep it up?
Jennings is trying to be the first 20 game loser this season…
Ensberg is getting some playing time with A-Rod having injury problems… he’s not doing outstanding, but he’s played respectable.
Everett is on the shelf with the bad shoulder but should be at least eligible to play on 4/30/08.

and they were singing the praises of some ex-Astros. They talked about the Devil Rays’ bullpen making the difference this season for that team, and pointed to Dan Wheeler and Trevor Miller as key relievers. funny what some consistent playing time does
he had a nice little stretch where he hit safely in 15 of 16 games until Rollins came back and sent him back to the bench. he was hitting up near .300 for the month of May with a OPS around .850.
i really think he could be a solid everyday player if somebody would give him a chance, but in the end his defensive versatility probably works against him to that end.

Sorry been a little while since I updated it..
Luke Scott has definitely cooled off, but still being a productive hitter for the most part… Qualls has now blown 3 out of 4 save chances, but still has a respectable ERA.. Lidge has been perfect and has only giving up 1 run in 18 innings… 10 for 10 in saves as well.

Luke Scott defensive sighting:
From Baseballmusings.com’s updates on the May 23d games:
In one of the close games tonight, Luke Scott just made a fantastic catch. With Upton on third after a single and an error on a pickoff throw, Pena launches a long fly to the warning track in left. Scott was playing in to try to prevent the run from scoring on a short fly with the Rays up 1-0. Scott Races back to the warning track and stretches out and makes the catch on what looked like a double. He fell and rolled, but held on for the out. Upton scores on the sacrifice fly, but Scott prevents a bigger inning. The Rays lead 2-0 going to the top of the ninth.

Good to see him bounce back from a poor ‘07 and pitch so well. I hope he continues to do so now that he’s basically the closer. I always wished Garner had let him close more games in ’06 when Lidge was struggling so much.

I had the feeling that the whole Wheeler-Lidge issue was misplayed by the Astros' staff last year.
It’s hard to know for certain, unless you know what’s going on in the clubhouse. But it just seemed like an uncomfortable relationship developed between Wheeler and Lidge, and that both guys felt they were yanked around unfairly. I think the pressure of having to succeed in every game, or else give up the closer job again to Lidge, came to the surface in that episode where Wheeler shoved Sampson. For all I know, that episode may have had a role in trading Wheeler. I’m with you, though…I always liked Wheeler and I’m glad to see him succeed.

I think the big thing with the Wheeler trade was that we had Qualls and Lidge, but we didn’t have a third baseman with an OPS above .750. The Astros desperately needed hitting, and while Wiggy definitely didn’t show his current abilities while he was in Tampa, he was a big improvement over Ensberg. We could stand to lose something from the bullpen, so Wheeler was the one to go.
