Houston Astros at San Diego Padres, 9:05PM CDT

Houston Astros @ San Diego Padres

Your Houston Astros play game 3 of a 4 game series against the Padres tonight at Petco Field and still look for their first win of the season.  Astros send Wandy Rodriguez to the hill against future hall of famer, Greg Maddux.

Lineups
Houston San Diego
1.  Bourn, CF 1.  Giles, RF
2.  Pence, RF 2.  Iguchi, 2B
3.  Berkman, 1B 3.  Kouzmanoff, 3B
4.  Lee, LF 4.  Gonzalez, A, 1B
5.  Tejada, SS 5.  Hairston, CF
6.  Blum, 2B 6.  Greene, SS
7.  Wigginton, 3B 7.  Barrett, C
8.  Towles, C 8.  Huber, LF
9.  Rodriguez, P 9.  Maddux, P

Lineup looks pretty much the same as last nights for the Astros, only Blum is getting the start at 2nd instead of Mark Loretta.  The Padres changed theirs up a little more by sending Barrett to call the game for Maddux and Huber to take left field duties for McAnulty.  That could be good for the Astros because both Bard and McAnulty have started off pretty well hitting .500 in this young season each.

Hopefully Wandy will look more like the "Home" Wandy from last season and less like the "Road" Wandy from last season tonight.  Game on!

Hey everyone

I probably won't be around for the start of the game(may miss most of it)... I've totally neglected my wife for the last few days so I need to spend some time with her... I hope you understand :)

Enjoy the game!

Go 'Stros!

Of course!

Enjoy your evening!

How do you get your lineups to look so nice?

Is that the lineup widget? I haven't gotten it to work yet.

by Dex on Apr 2, 2008 8:46 PM CDT   0 recs

Indeed

their open thread looks so much nicer. I want lineups!

Sorry

the Mad Dog doesn't look well upon people who hit doubles off him.

Pence doubles....

but berkman witth a comebacker to Maddux, and Pence gets hung up at 2d...rundown...Berkman makes itt to 2d. Bourn K'd to start the game.

by clack on Apr 2, 2008 9:12 PM CDT   0 recs

something

pretty weak, but something came of it!

by b0xii on Apr 2, 2008 9:15 PM CDT   0 recs

twilight zone

OK, I'm listening to the game via a radio stream that lags way behind the action, so much so that Gamecast is actually ahead of it, but Gamecast has its normal weird pauses.

so I knew something good happened and we scored, but couldn't figure out what until the audio happened.

by lnewcomer on Apr 2, 2008 9:15 PM CDT   0 recs

Berkman scored on an error

by Kousmanoff. It was really a bad swing by Lee....he tried to go after a ball almost in the dirt and hit a routine grounder to 3d. But Kous' throw was in the dirt and went past 1st base. Now tejada grounds out.

by clack on Apr 2, 2008 9:15 PM CDT   0 recs

Wandy Power!

Go, Wandy!
He's on my fantasy team, he better not screw up!

When will Astros get an RBI this season?

This is the third game. Shut out the first game; one run in on a walk in the second game (that's not an RBI is it?); and tonight a run on an error (that's not an RBI either is it?)

Is everyone back and accounted for?

by Joe in Birmingham on Apr 2, 2008 9:27 PM CDT   0 recs

Run on a walk

I believe that does qualify as an RBI....I'd have to double check though.

The error usually means no RBI credited.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

by Shake on Apr 2, 2008 9:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Mention it and it happens

Geoff Blum - homerun -definitely an RBI

for your next trick...

could you mention a win?

by Shake on Apr 2, 2008 9:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Right Now I'm settling for

back to back homeruns - Blum and Wiggy ! - not the advertised power but they came through.

Is everyone back and accounted for?

by Joe in Birmingham on Apr 2, 2008 9:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

huh

never woulda guessed the first back to back homers of the season would come from those two.

by MG(vers. 2) on Apr 2, 2008 9:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bout time...

The first homerun of the season! Keep piling on the runs!

Go Stros!

Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!

Wiggleston

has a better average than Berkman and Lee right now :p

by entropic soul on Apr 2, 2008 9:30 PM CDT   0 recs

YEAH!

Finally, some spark from the offense.

by BTastros on Apr 2, 2008 9:31 PM CDT   0 recs

Blum bobbled tricky

grounder in the 1st (scored a hit, but could have been an errror). And I as fearful that Wandy might let it get in his head, especially after a 3-0 count on the next hitter. But Wandy calmed down and got out of the inning. Blum rewards him witth a HR.

by clack on Apr 2, 2008 9:33 PM CDT   0 recs

Arrgghh

I'm at work listening to the radio. I waited patiently for the minor league hockey game to end... and the home team scores a goal with 20 seconds left to TIE THE GAME.

I'm gonna have to rely on 'Stros Bro for some of that spot on play by play.

Blum/Wiggy back to back

homers in the 2d for 3-0 Astros lead, if you didn't know already, solis.

by clack on Apr 2, 2008 9:35 PM CDT   0 recs

Thanks...

The hockey game is over... but now they're gonna do a post game show. As if there are any hockey fans in SA...

Hairston with his 2d

homer. 3-1 as the 2d starts for Wandy.

by clack on Apr 2, 2008 9:37 PM CDT   0 recs

Argh! Wandy!!!

No home runs please!

by entropic soul on Apr 2, 2008 9:39 PM CDT   0 recs

runners on corners...

1 out. Carlos Lee probably should have gotten to that hit...most leftfielders make the catch.

by clack on Apr 2, 2008 9:41 PM CDT   0 recs

Maddux up.

Showing bunt, fouls, for strike 1. Missed the curve for strike 2. Fouls one off. Strikes out on the next.

2 outs. Runners still 1st and 3rd.

by TexSkins on Apr 2, 2008 9:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Giles singles...

Barret scores. Runners 1st and 2nd.

3-2 Astros.

Radio guys talking about how Wandy had best K:BB ratio, Ks, etc. last year.

(Astro killer) Iguchi up.

by TexSkins on Apr 2, 2008 9:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Flies to Pence in right...

end of the threat.

3-2 through 2.

by TexSkins on Apr 2, 2008 9:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hopefully

That will be Wandy's "big" inning.

by entropic soul on Apr 2, 2008 9:46 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

FYI

Tim Redding - yes that Tim Redding - just threw a one hitter, over 7 innings for the Nats. Crazy.

Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz!

by SOLIS on Apr 2, 2008 9:44 PM CDT   0 recs

To beat Cole Hamels 1-0.

1st place Nats, 3-0. Break 'em up.

by TexSkins on Apr 2, 2008 9:47 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Pence, Berkman, Lee to start the 3rd...

Radio guys talking about how Maddux says he enjoys watching Peavy and Oswalt pitch.

Pence flies one to center, but caught. 1 out.

by TexSkins on Apr 2, 2008 9:48 PM CDT   0 recs

Berkman up...

.324 lifetime against Maddux. Not bad at all.

Apparently, Berkman said Chris Young was like the Jolly Green Giant.

Berkman doubles to left center (he's batting left-handed.)

1 on, 1 out for Lee.

by TexSkins on Apr 2, 2008 9:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Berkman

On my fantasy team too. I wonder how much a double is worth! Woot!

by entropic soul on Apr 2, 2008 9:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

good swings

sounds like we're making good contact off Maddux

by lnewcomer on Apr 2, 2008 9:52 PM CDT   0 recs

Astros hitting with runners

on base has been terrible so far. Berkman at 2d, then 3d, and neither Lee nor Tejada can drive him in.

by clack on Apr 2, 2008 9:54 PM CDT   0 recs

Kouzmanoff

works it full before a single to center. Gonzales up.

by TexSkins on Apr 2, 2008 9:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ginzales homers...

the Astros first lead is gone.

4-3 Pads.

by TexSkins on Apr 2, 2008 9:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The first sounds of the game...

And its the crowd cheering Kuuuuuuz. Damn it.

Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz!

by SOLIS on Apr 2, 2008 9:56 PM CDT   0 recs

Then the Gonzales homer...

I'm cursed.

Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz!

by SOLIS on Apr 2, 2008 9:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Kouzmanoff line drive single

now Gonzales homers....padres take lead 4-3.

by clack on Apr 2, 2008 9:57 PM CDT   0 recs

I'm done with the PBP for now...

I'm headed home. Be back later.

by TexSkins on Apr 2, 2008 9:58 PM CDT   0 recs

I'm bad luck

Just got upstairs to the computer, turn on the game and the first thing I see.. Astros winning 3-2. Next thing I see.. home run by Gonzales... sorry :(

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 2, 2008 9:59 PM CDT   0 recs

I'll take the blame on that one

I bitched about my game being bumped for minor league hockey - and the first sounds from the game were the Kuuz single and Gonzales homer.

Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz!

Thanks

Tex and everyone else for keeping it up :)

this is more like it!!

I mean, didn't everyone expect the astros to be in high run scoring games. 4-3 in the 3rd is just what I expect! Fricking Stros!

by TimStros on Apr 2, 2008 10:01 PM CDT   0 recs

JD made point that..

umpiires are only calling the high strike and not the low strrke. Wandy tries for the low strike at the knees, can't get the call, and then throws the ball upstairs, trying to get strikes. That is recipe for getting hit hard.

by clack on Apr 2, 2008 10:03 PM CDT   0 recs

Hernandez

was doing the same...

Top 4th

Blum, Ty and Towles due up in the inning.

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 2, 2008 10:04 PM CDT   0 recs

Blum

I see he hit a home run in his only at bat of the day... That's a good sign...

1st pitch, line drive over a leaping Iguchi for a lead off single. Blum now 2-2

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 2, 2008 10:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Wiggy

Wiggy as well, back to back jobs... impressive(I missed some good stuff).

Barrett out to the hill to talk to Maddux... Let's take a moment to thank Barrett for what he did to A.J. Pierzynski.. ;)

Count quickly to 0-2 on Ty... FSN just shows Ty's HR.. very nice majestic shot... country strong! But not this time bounces it to short and is thrown out at 1st .

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 2, 2008 10:08 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Towles

Grounds to Maddux for out 2.

Go 'Stros!

Wandy

Grounds to Iguchi at 2nd to end the inning.

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 2, 2008 10:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Quick question

If Wiggy keeps up the poor play in the field and at the plate, do you see them giving the job to Geoff when Kaz comes off the DL?

Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz!

by SOLIS on Apr 2, 2008 10:08 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Good question..

but I think they would give him multiple chances.. besides, he just hit a home run :)

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 2, 2008 10:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Blum over Wigginton?

i would be opposed to it, at least w/o a significantly larger # of games to evaluate Wigginton's play. I think Blum is definitely on the downhill side of his career (thought he was a bad signing). I think it's way too early to call his play poor, especially since we pretty much knew what his glove would be.

by lnewcomer on Apr 2, 2008 10:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No.

I mean, if he becomes Ensberg at the plate or something maybe, but I think it's pretty certain the Astros consider him the answer at 3rd for the foreseeable future. Besides, he's not hitting terribly (and it's only been 3 games) and I think his fielding problems have been overstated.

by MG(vers. 2) on Apr 2, 2008 10:17 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Blum likes revenge...

against his former teams. Certainly the case after he left Houston (e.g., World Series HR). And now he is 2 for 2 against Pads.
