Apparently, Gonzalez was doing some dancing and stuff...
which really caught the attention of random radio guy #1. Comments?
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Matsui walks...
then gets caught stealing on a missed hit and run. Awesome.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
But
Bourn follows with a slap single to left
"Juan Cruz has Freddy Krueger stuff. Welcome to Elm Street." -- Mark Grace
Bourn scores from first...
Tejada put one down the line. Upton took his time and Romero waved him.
1-0 Astros.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Radio guys say 23 1st inning runs...
that’s the most for any inning. Interesting.
Berkman works it full. Then Ks looking.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Lee puts one off Jackson's glove...
dribbles into right, Tejada scores.
2-0. Cassel can take a deep breath now.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
And then Bourn singles past the SS...
sounded like a good hit and run swing.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Deep fly to right.
Drew made it seem like it was gone. And then “Caught by Cruz, 2 away.”
Bastards.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
gameday had that pitch as an 87 mph changeup
belt high, inside corner. ouch.
although calling it a changeup might be a little generous. the previous pitch was an 89 mph fastball.
Jinx?
Turnabout is fair play.
"Juan Cruz has Freddy Krueger stuff. Welcome to Elm Street." -- Mark Grace
also, Bourn is ridiculously fast
scoring from first on a double isn’t that rare, but that ball didn’t even get to the wall.
Cassel was huffing and puffing...
when he rounded 3d base. I’m not fond of that 3d base coach call. I like aggressiveness, but not with the pitcher like that Plus now you worry that Cassel will be affected as he pitches now.
I think you're damned if you do, damned if you don't
we did have the top of the lineup up, but w/ 2 outs and our bats, probably a pretty low % of scoring that run.
on the other hand, it sounds like the throw was there in plenty of time, so it wasn’t so close that it required the proverbial perfect play.
In that situation, I’m ok w/ the gamble. Maybe I’d feel diff if it was Oswalt running instead of Cassel.
it was a pretty good throw and relay
worst part was cassel’s slide. looks like he came down awkwardly on his knee.
if he did it was a pretty weak effort
he definitely attempted some kind of slide, rather than running thru the catcher.
nice DP
has Cassel cracked 90 on the gun tonight? I’m really not familiar w/ his stuff, so maybe he’s just a soft-tosser.
Cassel doesn't normally pitch in the 90's
average fastball speed is 87-88, but it is a sinker. He throws a slow slider (75-76) and a slow change (74-75). In his last start, the radio guys were talking about his unusual change up, which has been called differernt things. It is a palm ball, but he can vary his arm angle and make it look like a splitter or something.
wow
double to clear the bases.
The D’Back fans are both happy and sad. Sad for the runs. Happy b/c the rookie pitcher will prob come in now.
and it wasn't a "get ready quick" throwing session...
from the looks of it, since they were hoping Gonzalez would get out of the inning himself.
With a big enough lead in the division,
we’ll give Max Scherzer his extra time warming up. Even if it means another run or two.

Blum
I had absolutely no confidence in Blum that at-bat , and he drove in three runs!!

Chron guy pointed out that Cassel has as many hits this year
as Cruz and Ausmus (also backe & oswalt in the pitchers category).
in only 3 AB.
it hit something metal over the fence and bounced straight back.
More sub-par umpiring costing us, heh.
Yeah
you guys got robbed of an extra run.

saying the way it bounced back so hard into the field that it may have hit off a railing right behind the wall
Max Scherzer
Per the D-BAcks TV team, this is the D-Backs top rated prospect. Dominated the PCL sayeth they.

38 Ks 3 BBs in 23 innings in AAA.

so I gather he's been a starter in the minors
which I would assume means he’ll probably go at least 3 tonight?
If not more.
There was talk of turning him into a closer, a la Papelbon, but they’re trying to develop his secondary pitches and stretch him into a starter.

On reflection
I think it was bad form for the DBacks manager to change pitchers with 2 out and Cassel coming to bat.
Sure – the Rookie gets to pitch to a pitcher for his first Major league batter; but the manager took out a struggling pitcher who most likely could have retired Cassel and been in the dugout when he was removed from the game. Manager cost him some confidence.

true
but once you’ve given up 4 runs and the pitcher already has one hit off you, you don’t have much room to complain.
conversely, he may have thought bringing in a rookie reliever in his first MLB appearance against the oppo pitcher was a plus
He is supposed to be an elite prospect.
Has been compared to Lincecum. Had the same kind of numbers in AAA.
Scherzer
has better velocity, I believe

OT: on the internet stream
they play the opening from Mister Mister’s “Take These Broken Wings” as the bump music coming back into the broadcast.
And yes, I am ashamed that I know that song
Triple
then a 1-2-3 inning. Not too bad.

OT: Roy Halladay threw his 4th CG in a row
although tonight was a loss as he gave up the winning run to the BoSox in the bot. 9. w/ two out. Loses 1-0.
Scherzer throw sidearm?
it’s hard to tell on Gameday, but his release point on the graph looks pretty low.
Looks
sorta more like a 3/4 delivery

Here's hoping...
Berkman and/or Lee can tell Scherzer “welcome to the bigs” in their own special way.
Cubs v Brewers
Cubs are 2 runs behind the Brewers in the 8th, so if they lose and we win, we get a little bit closer to them.
down with the Cubs!!

Now that I see a couple of slo-mo replays
of Carlos Lee’s foul ball, I notice that Scherzer may drop down a bit.. not sidearm but is an unusual release.
Cassel taken out with 2 outs in the fifth
AAAARRRGGGHHHH. I feel for him. One out from qualifying for a win

I was trying to remember
If a starter leaves w/ the lead, but doesn’t go 5 innings. And the team never gets tied or gives up the lead, I think the rule is still that the starter can’t get the win, no matter what. Scorer selects one of the other pitchers.
But isn't that up to the scorer?
I thought the scorer can still give it to him.
by entropic soul on Apr 29, 2008 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions
yes, I think that's right
but it’s not automatic.
Do you think Byrdak stays in to pitch, or does Coop bring in geary or Villarreal?
Is he?
thought it was a judgment call for the scorer, based on the remaining pitchers performance throughout the rest of the game.
I thought
it was whoever was on the mound when the 15th out occurs?

I think technically
the scorer can give it the starter if the relievers are very ineffective. But that’s not going to happen tonight.
Astros fan for life
by Joe in Birmingham on Apr 29, 2008 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions
Here's what I found - a reliver would get the win
If the pitcher whose team assumes a lead while such pitcher is in the game, or during the inning on offense in which such pitcher is removed from the game, and does not relinquish such lead, is a starting pitcher who has not completed
(1) five innings of a game that lasts six or more innings on defense, or
(2) four innings of a game that lasts five innings on defense, then the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the relief pitcher, if there is only one relief pitcher, or the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer’s judgment was the most effective, if there is more than one relief pitcher.
Rule 10.17(b) Comment: It is the intent of Rule 10.17(b) that a relief pitcher pitch at least one complete inning or pitch when a crucial out is made, within the context of the game (including the score), in order to be credited as the winning pitcher. If the first relief pitcher pitches effectively, the official scorer should not presumptively credit that pitcher with the win, because the rule requires that the win be credited to the pitcher who was the most effective, and a subsequent relief pitcher may have been most effective. The official scorer, in determining which relief pitcher was the most effective, should consider the number of runs, earned runs and base runners given up by each relief pitcher and the context of the game at the time of each relief pitcher’s appearance. If two or more relief pitchers were similarly effective, the official scorer should give the presumption to the earlier pitcher as the winning pitcher.
(c) The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when at least one succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead. In such a case, the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the succeeding relief pitcher who was most effective, in the judgment of the official scorer.
Rule 10.17© Comment: The official scorer generally should, but is not required to, consider the appearance of a relief pitcher to be ineffective and brief if such relief pitcher pitches less than one inning and allows two or more earned runs to score (even if such runs are charged to a previous pitcher). Rule 10.17(b) Comment provides guidance on choosing the winning pitcher from among several succeeding relief pitchers.

damn, you just beat me
Cassel can’t get the win at all and it’s up to the official scorer to choose the most effective reliever to award it to. Right now, I’d guess Villarreal, for getting 3 outs, but maybe Byrdak gets credit for getting out of a jam.
Isn't premature conversation...
the whole idea behind live blogging games?
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Heh, that's gonna be a tough day
It has to happen pretty soon if he doesn’t start hitting, and quick.
Here’s hoping he can pick one up in his next AB.
What Cruz is doing now...
is representative of his hitting in each of the previous 2 or 3 years. I am not optimistic. Cruz probably is lucky that no outfielders are tearing it up in Round Rock.
So...
I think I can be happy to see a rookie have such a great major league debut…
So long as we don’t blow the lead.
MLB Debut Record
Max Scherzer set a major league record for numbee of men retired in a row in a major league debut. He’s only one strikeout away from tying the strikeout record for a debut performance.

I stand corrected
Both records I mentioned were for relievers (not for starters); and Scherzer was pulled before he tied the strikeout record.

no, i really just stopped being much of a fan
followed them the whole time I was growing up, but now I just vaguely keep track of what’s going on. I’ve soured on the NBA in general.

At this rate, we’ll leave the inning 6-5.

that worked out OK
after the run, a couple pop ups to end the inning and we just need to get past the 3-4 hitters next inning.
glad we could help scherzer w/ this
only 2nd pitcher since 1956 to throw 3+ perfect innings in his debut
