Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals, 1:15 PM CDT
Houston Astros @ St. Louis Cardinals
The Astros take on the Cardinals for the final game of this 3 games series. A win today means the Astros have successfully won their 3rd straight series in a row. The Astros send Brandon Backe to the hill to face Kyle Lohse.
The main question for me today is... which Backe will we see? Will wee the Backe who went 7 innings against San Diego on Tuesday allowing just 3 runs? Or will we see the Brandon Back who pitched just 3 innings against the Phillies, giving up 6 earned runs? This season Backe's made 5 starts, and 4 of them have been pretty good. If he can continue to pitch well 4 out of 5 starts, then the Astros will have to be happy with those results. Backe has only allowed more than 3 runs in 1 game this season.
Kyle Lohse for the Cardinals has been pretty good this season as well, but is coming off his worst start of the season in which he only went 4 innings and gave up 4 runs.

Backe may carry a chip on his shoulder...
facing the Cardinals. His “discussion” with Pujols may have been a factor in yesterday’s bench clearing episode involving Ausmus. Backe is ultra-competitive and you have to wonder how that episode, as well as Backe’s stated dislike for Pujols, will affect the game. I hope that Backe can channel his competitiveness constructively. Hopefully he won’t allow his emotions to distract him from concentrating on the no. 1 task, getting hitters outs. I wouldn’t be surprised if LaRussa tries to create another incident in order to fan the flames and try to get Backe off his game.

I agree
I missed the bench clearing chat yesterday, but in my head I was picturing Backe shooting out of the dugout and drop kicking Pujols… Hopefully cooler heads prevail… I’m not a Pujols hater anyways.

Just Visiting
Cards fan here visiting from Viva El Birdos. I think Backe would have a problem drop-kicking Pujols seeing as Pujols outweighs Backe by about 50 lbs. Anyway, just wanted to say that these two teams play the most competitive games of any two teams I have ever seen. There never seems to be a blowout when these two teams play. Doesn’t seem to matter who’s pitching or hitting either. I enjoy watching series between these teams and regardless of the recent dustups between these teams I don’t hate the Astros the way I hate the Cubs….maybe Marty Brennaman was right.
Observations on your team from a Cards fan:
Tejada can still play SS
Berkman is a great hitter…but he’s Ted Williams when he plays the Cards.
Chacon’s walks are going to catch up with him.
Oswalt’s bad start should not be a concern going forward.
Hunter Pence needs to learn to recognize a slider…and lay off it.

Thanks for stopping by
If Pujols ever got a hand on Backe, it would be lights out.. Pujols is a monster!!
I always enjoy the Cardinals Astros series and have always had a sort of respect for the Cardinals more than other teams… especially the Cubs :)

Can't say that I disagree much...
with your 5 observations about the Astros. Tejada’s defense has surprised me. If you think Berkman is Ted Williams vs. the Cards, he must be Babe Ruth vs. the Reds…Berkman’s career OPS at Great American Ballpark is 1.296. Chacon probably is due for some regression, but I think he will be a league average starter. Hopefully, Oswalt’s regression to his mean will offset Chacon’s. I think pitchers are taking advantage of Pence’s excessive aggressiveness; he has to adjust or else he will get nothing but sliders and outside breaking pitchers.

If Backe would like to put his life on the line...
...then by all means go ahead and throw one in Pujols back. I think Backe needs to look at himself in the mirror and then look at Albert and then probably decide he doesn’t really want to get his a—kicked.

Interesting to see the hoop-dee-doo yesterday
Caught some of it on Baseball Tonight. Maybe you guys can be the enemy instead of us.
Everybody knows about the Tony v Ned last year. This year everybody says it over but… there was a Card plunked a couple games ago (unintentionally it appeared) and then Gagne hit their SS in the forearm and injured him. There was no glaring or accusations, but Tony impresses me as someone who always gets even.

LaRussa likes the mind games...
and I think he likes to use incidents to fire his team, or particular players, up. LaRussa always has some stuff going on with specific teams each year.
However, I thought Berkman’s comments were funny. As a laid back kind of player, Berkman doesn’t find the feuding unusual. He said both teams are loaded with Type A personalities. He compared it to what happens when you put 4 bulls in a pen together.

Yeah...
I’m fine with Pence moving up over Loretta… but what’s with Kaz in front of Bourn? The greatest advantage of Bourn is that if he gets on, he usually gets to 2nd. This doesn’t quite make up for his low OBP, but it’s not an argument for having him hit 2nd.

I am guessing that Cooper
wants to put him in more bunting situations. Of course, if Kaz doesn’t get on base, it doesn’t matter. But Bourn is struggling at the plate so much, Coop may figure that the sac bunt attempt still may produce a hit. Garner used that thinking sometimes when Willy T was struggling.

it's a mystery why Bourn isn't a better bunter
I have no real idea how much skill/talent it takes to be a great bunter. I’m not sure if Willy T would be considered great, but he seemed to be well above average.
but if you have the speed of Bourn, wouldn’t that be something that you were working on your entire life? It’s kind of like Shaq’s inability to shoot free throws.

Larrry Dierker (as a broadcaster)...
had no patience for fast hitters who couldn’t bunt. Apparently Dierker prided himself on his bunting ability, and he said there is no excuse for a poor bunter, because it doesn’t require great physical skill…just practice and using the right technique. I remember that he harped on that point when Brian Hunter came up as a rookie, because he wouldn’t bunt. Dierker became manager the next off-season and Hunter was traded before thee season started.
Bourn has been practicing the bunt, but, based on his quotes, it seems like Bourn doesn’t have a lot of confidence in his bunt. Maybe he neeeds to be forced into a bunting situation.

I remember Dierker doing that, now that you mention it.
Somebody tell Dierk to start writing essays on his website again. I just checked and he hasn’t posted one since last August. Maybe the Astros are too depressing for him to contemplate this year.
(Although for an interesting idea, you can read his last post that suggested we should have tried to convert Luke Scott to a third baseman a la Denny Walling. Would have been a nice way to get his bat into the lineup).

Swear he’s gay (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I’ve always thought he had a huge crush on Ausmus. A couple of years ago, Ausmus gets hit in the hand, and who’s the first person to “comfort” him? Yep, our friend Yadi. And then, there was another game where Bradley gets on base somehow, gets to second, and Molina “tries” to throw him out. Molina was grinning like a fiend. J.D. said, “Must be a catcher thing.”

Video of Molina pitch up now via Gameday
Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a way to link directly to it (this goes to today’s Gameday and you can click the link for Videos http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2008_04_27_houmlb_slnmlb_1&mode=gameday)
In my opinion it was a typical up and in pitch that wouldn’t be anything in the normal course of baseball, but b/c of the situation it is blown up. Definitely
Cards announcers on the video said Backe should have been thrown out for clearly throwing at Molina’s head. Sure. They also referenced the time out on the previous pitch.
Towles and Molina almost got into it which would have been funny.

If we get to the eight still trailing by three, let’s say screw the game and bring in Brocail and have him bean pujols. Let’s see if Fat Albert is so chippy when he doesn’t have 50 pounds on the guy.

Borks and Moehler
making it hard for Astros brass to decide who release since they both suck.

Coop on today's lineup
“Do I have to have a rationale? I don’t have one,” Cooper said. “I just pick ‘em out of a hat. I don’t have one. There is no rationale.”
it’s clear it was said in jest, but sometimes you wonder.

Berkman's line drive looked like it had chance...
off the bat. But it was caught on warning track.

well that sucked
at least we get to play the cards a bunch more times this year. that should be fun. their pitchers are not going to keep this up and one series we’re bound to catch them when the bats are going and we’ll pound them.

i feel guilty
for enjoying the drama of bench clearing.
i dont want anyone to get hurt- but that part of me wants to punch molina in the face for being a sensitive weinerface.
p.s. i am really proud of backe this season. in fact, i am proud of our starting rotation.

I'm not proud of Backe
He need to learn to start using his brain to pitch & not trying to get by on an adrenaline rush for 6 innings. Lost in all the non-fight nonsense was the fact that Backe threw 2 pitches out of the strike zone to a rookie (Ludwick), who fished for them both. With an 0-2 count, Backe grooved a fastball right down the middle. Ludwick’s hit broke the game open. Dumb pitching. I’d rather Backe get smart from this point on than get even. His act, as well as the number of walks he gives up, is wearing thin.

Backe made some mistakes.
But I don’t think it had anything to do with the Molina episode or any “get even” stuff. I agree that some of the walks were terrible mistakes, given the batters involved. Backe isn’t the same pitcher he was before his injuries. He is primarily a breaking ball pitcher now. His fastball velocity isn’t great, and he isn’t throwing it as much. Backe can throw some good curveballs, but when his command of the off-speed pitches lapses, he will have some trouble. I am impressed that Backe is doing a pretty good job adjusting to his current style of pitching.

Don't feel guilty
We enjoy it, too. Especially when Backe talks trash! Pujols has 3 of his 5 homers against the Astros. Please, keep talking, Brandon. We love it!
BTW, Ausmus looked like a High School Senior waiting for the Principal to break up the fight before it starts. He doesn’t want any of Yadi. He owes Yadi a Gold Glove, too.
Can’t wait to see Fat Elvis, Migrandpa Tejada and Mr. Backe again.
