Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals, 7:15 PM CDT
Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals, Apr 25, 2008 7:15 PM CDT
Shawn Chacon looks to earn his 1st win of the season today against the St. Louis Cardinals. Scratch that... Shawn Chacon has earned multiple wins this season, but unfortunately has been able to record one in the standings. Hopefully that changes tonight.
Pence has been doing well lately... I wonder how long until he finds himself hitting 6th... or do you think Cooper would be afraid to move him since he has been doing good lately? I say move him up... no reason he should be hitting behind Blum.
Astros have won 5 straight and look to do some damage to the Cardinals who sit in 2nd place behind the Cubbies. The Astros are only 3 games back from the Cardinals... and start a 3 game series tonight with the Cards... so needless to say, this series could be really productive if the Astros can continue their current mini-streak.

There should be a rule...
Visiting team gets one automatic run per 30 minutes of rain delay at any ballpark. :p
Top 1st...
Kaz Matsui grounds to 2nd and is thrown out at first.
Erstad hits it sharply into RF and has a stand-up double. On 2nd with 1 out.
Tejada...
is at 2-2 for a while, fouling off a few pitches. He works it to 3-2, then taps a ball foul down the RF line. Then flares one over Pujols, who makes a pretty good catch and quick throw to 2nd to hold Erstad.
Berkman...
bats with 2 outs and Erstad on 2nd. Hits a flyball into left center field. Duncan and Ankiel collide, but Duncan manages to hold onto the ball. Top of the inning over with no score.
Ankiel up next
Chacon’s mechanics seem rather off after the 2-hour delay, and he quickly takes it to 3-0, and then walks on the 4th pitch. This is bad news with Pujols up.
Pujols...
is up, and Chacon manages a 1st pitch strike with a 79 mph slider. 2nd pitch is low, 1-1. 3rd pitch nearly gets away, and Towles makes a nice stop. On the 2-1 pitch, Pujols pops it up to Matsui for a huge 1st out.
Duncan...
taps the 1st pitch foul down the RF line, and I had a split second’s hope of a double play ball. Chacon gets it to 1-2, and then Duncan fouls off a couple of pitches. Duncan eventually walks to load the bases.
Glaus is up...
with a .314 avg and 3 grand slams in bases-loaded AB’s. Fouls off the first two pitches to get in the hole 0-2. Chacon gets a huge K. 2 outs, the bases still juiced.
Kennedy...
takes a 1st pitch strike.
Kennedy taps it to near short, but Blum fields it and flips it to 2nd for the force play… but misses Matsui completely, and 2 runs score on Blum’s error.
Chacon was nearly out of it, and Blum blew it. Doh! 2-0 Cardinals with 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd.
Molina...
is probably receiving his first intentional pass… ever… so that Chacon can get to the Cardinals’ conveniently located 8th spot hitter—the pitcher!
Looper...
quickly goes to 0-2. 1-2. Looper then pops it up to Berkman to finally end the inning.
The error by Blum costs us way more than anything Chacon did himself.
Top of the 2nd brings up Lee...
who is quickly at 0-2. Works it to 1-2, and gets a fortunate call on a check-swing. He fouls off a few, staying at 2-2. Then taps one to 3rd and is out at 1st. 1 out.
I must admit...
that late start or no, I’m disappointed people aren’t in the thread for an Astros-Cardinals game!
I could have sworn
that Roy was scheduled to start tonight. Was it the rain delay or am I just an idiot?
a single to the pitcher?
-per Gameday. At least chacon isn’t walking everybody and their dog this inning.
Hope the guys
didn’t leave their bats in Cincy.
And where’s Blum’s glove anyway? How many errors does he have now? 3?
bases loaded
for the second inning in a row. there was a time when we seemed to have the cardinals number, but the last couple years we sorta deflate when they show up.
He's still pretty funny-looking
with his mechanics. I think he found some things that were “working” but weren’t really comfortable, and he keeps losing it periodically.
Yeah...
St Louis broadcast noted that Cardinals lead the majors in walks this season. We’re helping to pad that stat a little.
no way that stat lasts
pujols will draw a ton of walks, of course, maybe duncan, but the rest of their offense is going to drop off.
I probably won't be here long
Have company coming over and the game’s not on tv so I won’t be hanging around the computer long.
A good question...
Stros Bro suggested that maybe Coop doesn’t want to move him up to 6th since he’s been hitting better at 7th. Doesn’t make a ton of sense to me… it’s not like people are pitching around him to get to Towles.
He's mediocre in general
But Looper does have his “on” days.

Molina of the intentional walk...
has to actually bat this time. Blum tries to make a tough play on a near foul-ball (spinning, jumping, and throwing), forgetting that it’s Molina running and that he could have turned, had a cigarette, and still thrown him out. Not sure if it was scored an error.
Is Chacon getting...
squeezed a bit? According to GameCast it looks as if he is. At least that was a better inning for him. Let’s go Stros! Only down 2 (although it feels like more)!
SeoulStro
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Tejada...
gets robbed by the Cardinals’ stupid field. A roller down the LF line with no chance of a play which bounces off the turn and then goes foul. He then chops it to short for the 2nd out.
Berkman...
will have to get something serious going to have a shot at that 3-4un homer.
He fouls off the first pitch, then finds himself at 2-1. He rolls it to 2nd and is thrown out to end the top of the inning.
Bottom of the 4th...
starts with Schumaker getting out quickly with a grounder to 2nd or short (was looking away). 1 out.
Top of the 5th starts with Lee...
who is (unfortunately) leading off another inning. He pops up to right for the 1st out.
Blum (who shouldn't be hitting 6th)...
is hitting 6th again tonight. He bounces an 0-2 pitch to 2nd, and is thrown out at first. 2 outs.
This game
is almost as bad as Amy Winehouse looks. :p

Man, I can't believe this
30+ runs in the last 3 games or so and now being 1 hit by LOOPER after 5 innings!
Depressing…
Let’s go Stros, them bats gotta wake up!
SeoulStro
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Bottom of the 5th...
starts with Miles, who replaces Glaus. He pops it up to center for the 1st out.
Apparently...
Glaus was complaining of water from his eyes blurring his vision.
Hopefully it’s nothing serious—but maybe it’s tears from blowing it on 2 bases-loaded AB’s.
Molina of the inexplicable infield hit...
hits it out to Carlos Lee, who is at least participating in this game with his glove. Inning over.
It is somehow the top of the 6th...
in one of the most excruciating ball-games I think I’ve watched. But good job to Chacon for managing to make it through the 5th. All I want is for us to score 3 runs and get him in line for a well-deserved first win.
And we start with...
Towles, who grounds to short and is thrown out at 1st with a long stretch by Albert.
Chacon...
stays in the game, and is quickly in the hole 0-2. He fouls off a few and then strikes out swinging. 2 outs.
Matsui...
could help us a lot by doing anything. ANYTHING.
A bloop hit! Huzzah!
On 1st with 2 outs and Erstad up.
Erstad...
wants another swing at that 1-1 pitch. Looper gives him a nice one to hit, and Erstad gets under it a little too much and hits it out to RF. Top of the inning over. If Chacon wants his win, he needs to get through at least another inning.
btw
did anyone confirm that Bidge was actually in the running for some HS baseball coaching job? The article I read made it sound like there was speculation, but it never actually quoted anyone with authority, or you know, actual facts.
I hadn't heard that...
and I’m not sure what “in the running would” mean. “We could go with the math teacher, or Craig Biggio… hhmmmm.” Unless it’s like a really competitive HS or something.
That Bum Blum
Where are the hits tonight?
Astros can still win this thing.
Okay – I’m just tuning in and thought I’d summarize the game to this point to get me in the spirit.

If not for the error
We might be looking at a 0-0 game here.
Yes, with Shawn Chacon and Braden Looper
They really aren't so bad
But watching mlb.tv does constantly remind me of how great J.D. and Brownie are.
i've got it
astros all recorded tonight’s ep of BSG on the Tivo back at the hotel. rain delay pissed them off, so now they’re just in a hurry to get it over w/ and back to the room so they can catch up w/ Starbuck.
Ryan...
who I like just because he isn’t Eckstein, shows bunt and takes 2 balls to start the AB. LaGenius calls a hit and run that almost turns into a double play after the ball is caught by Erstad. Looper scrambles back to 1st. 1 out.
lol
radio guy just compared berkman waving at Erstad to an 8 year old Little Leaguer. I can picture that.
WOW...
Considering Chacon was at 60 pitches thru 2 innings, he managed to go 6 and keep us in the game. Now only if our bats would wake up!
Rally time – Let’s go Stros!
SeoulStro
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Top of the 7th...
in what feels like one of the longest games I’ve ever watched. I know that it’s muggy in St. Louis, and I think it’s somehow affecting my mood.
Tejada works it to 3-1 and then takes a leadoff walk. Berkman up!
Berkman...
would really like to cash in on the walk….
But he grounds into the double play. UGH. 2 outs.
Lee is now...
batting with the bases empty and 2 outs. If he walks, I’m gonna wish we had Pence in the 6 spot.
3-1, and Lee rolls it up the middle, but Kennedy was playing near the bag and throws him out at first.
What a deflating inning...
after a leadoff walk and the meat of our order up! Gotta hold them…we got a new pitcher coming in?
Go Stros! We can win this still!
SeoulStro
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Bottom of the 7th...
and Chacon is still out there. He’s still showing little flashes of wildness, but he gets Ankiel to hit a flyball to LF on the 2-1 pitch.
Pujols is up..
and I’m worried he’s about to add on. But then I’m always worried about that with this guy.
Chacon sticks to breaking balls and starts out 1-2. Pujols hits a high fly ball to CF. 2 outs.
maybe Chacon is using reverse psychology
figures that since we keep losing games where he leaves w/ the lead, he’ll leave the game behind and we’ll score some runs.
Chacon...
Goes 7 and we do squat for him! We gotta come back as we are only down 2!
Go Stros – Rally time!
SeoulStro
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Boooooottom of the 7th...
starts with Blum, who could do us all a favor by giving Pence a chance to tie it. Ryan Franklin is in to pitch for Looper.
Blum swings almost vertically at an inside pitch to make it 1-1, and then fouls one off for 1-2. 2-2 on a pitch low and outside. Blum then flies out to CF. 1 out.
Pence...
can’t tie the game with this AB, but he does manage a single on the first pitch, just out of the reach of the likeable Ryan. 1 on, 1 out.
Cruz Jr...
in to bat. He’s 2 for 22 so far this year, and I really want him to do something here.
Starts out 3-0, and he takes on a pitch over the plate. 3-1. Franklin gets a favorable call for 3-2. Cruz chops it to Kennedy to end the inning.
Bah, dropping in...
to find that the only runs scored were off an error.
Un-fun fact: Lidge is perfect in six save opportunities so far.
the question is
are they Lidge-like cardiac saves, or is he truly back to being dominant? I know his first or second of the year was typical Lidge (allow a runner or two, let the tying run get in scoring position, etc).
his line for the year
10 IP, 10 K, 5 H, 6 BB (1 intentional), 0 ER, 2 R. 2 wild pitches.
overall, not too bad. allowing more than a baserunner/inning, but the sample is so small it could have been just a bad couple games.
That's good news.
I’m glad Lidge is doing ell. There’s no guaranteee he would have fared as well with the Astros this year. I do wish the Astros had a reliable closer.

I didn't realize Lidge was 31
it was good for us to sell high (or relatively high), but I don’t think we got a very good return.
It’s not that I dislike Bourn, but it seems like we could have gotten something closer to a sure prospect.
Cruz, Jr
When was the last time he had a hit?
Astros fan for life
by Joe in Birmingham on Apr 25, 2008 11:22 PM CDT reply actions
like someone said
either on this board, or a blog, “Is there any chance he’s on this team, if his last name isn’t Cruz?”
I doubt it.
Is cruz jr. better than Orlando Palmeiro?
OP took a lot of abuse from fans….but I don’t think he hit this poorly.
Molina...
who assuredly has never been intentionally walked and had an infield hit in the same night before….
He now walks on 4 pitches.
Barton is in for Franklin...
Wright gets perhaps a favorable call on an inside pitch to strike him out. Inning over as we head to the 9th.
Isringhausen
usually dominates us. but I seem to remember a comment from Cardinals-land somewhere this week that he’s been a little off lately.
Top of the 9th brings the top of the order...
Matsui, who has one of our precious hits this evening, taps a ball foul down the RF line to start out 0-2. He strikes out on a ball in the dirt, and is nice enough to run it out. 1 out.
Erstad...
gets in the hole 0-2 and then fouls off a bunch. Molina sets up outside, and Erstad pokes the ball into LF. 1 on, 1 out for Tejada.
Tejada...
starts out 3-0, and the Cardinals fans are getting nervous. Isringhausen gets a call for 3-1. Then a 3-2, and Tejada hasn’t swung yet.
TRIPLE BY TEJADA!!!!!
Now Berkman...
can tie it with a sac fly. But I want more. Like lnewcomer said below—I’m not sure if I can take an extra-innings game.
Izzy gets a favorable call for 0-1, and then Lance can’t check his swing for 0-2. Molina has to dive to stop a ball to his left. 1-2. Lance argues that the 1-2 hit him, and the ump disagrees.
Lance hits a long fly-ball to LF to tie the game!
some announcer was bitching about that the other day
fans throwing the ball back. I don’t care one way or the other.
Now Blum is up...
in what has become a 3-2 game. He hits it hard to Pujols, who tosses to Izzy at 1st to end the inning.
Go Valverde!
although if we score runs
we need to either win or lose it outright. I don’t know if I can take extra-innings of this game.
3-2 Astros
Can they hold it? It’s like walking on eggshells. I’m not able to celebrate quite yet.

Went to change my 19-month old daughter's

Go Stros! Big V will probably give me a heart attack in the bottom of 9th!
SeoulStro
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Tejada is my game hero
He was thinking triple out of the box on a ball into the gap in right-center, and he made it happen.
I want to believe! As Valverde gets started against Ryan...
Bourn is in center for the defensive boost.
1st pitch is a nicely placed strike. On 0-2 he puts it way outside. 1-2. Ryan hits it up the middle to a diving Tejada who double clutches and doesn’t make the throw to 1st.
Schumaker shows bunt...
and then bunts it foul down the 1st base line. He stays at 0-2 for a while (my feed cut out).
Then Ryan steals 2nd, and Towles has no chance.
Schumaker advances the runner to 3rd with a groundball to Matsui, who handles it nicely to get the out at 1st.
Ankiel...
wants to end it on the 1-0 pitch and swings hard on an outside pitch. He fouls the next to get in the hole 1-2.
Ankiel strikes out awkwardly on a really high pitch.
Duncan...
has drawn 2 walks, lined out, and grounded out hard, so I’m not feeling great about this.
Berkman, Tejada, Valverde, and Towles have a little meeting.
Duncan fouls off the first pitch. 0-1. Swings and misses on a nice pitch, and it’s 0-2. Fouls off the next pitch. Duncan pops up to Tejada… and GAME OVER!
Gameday in-game video
keeps returning an error when trying to show me Carlos’ HR. sounds like it was a no-doubter.
Certainly sounded like it
Dolan was saying it had left the park right after the crack of the bat. (Or was that Raymond? Too bad Milo’s not up for travel these days.)
looked like a hanging breaking ball
right on the inner half. lee put the classic HR swing on it and it was almost a line drive, half a dozen rows deep in LF.
Just saw replay of Tejada's score on the sac fly
he should have taken out Molina. he was standing in the same spot as Towles last week.
How many infield singles do...
the Cards have this game! Blah!
Go Stros!

The game was (eventually) very much worth the wait.
Chacon really impressed me. He was obviously off after the 2 hour wait, and managed to go 7 innings.
Real Nice Ugly Win
I even had faith in Valvoline, there at the end.
My 3 nominations for Game Hero are Tejada, Tejada, and Tejada. His triple singlehandedly turned around the inning and the game.
Let's talk about something other than Tejada
