Astros Sweep Padres Out Of Houston
Okay, so it was only a 2 game sweep of the Padres, but with the way things are going for the Astros so far this season; a sweep is a sweep. The Astros beat the Padres tonight 11-7 and currently sit tied for 4th in the NL central with the Reds, 5.5 games back of the Chicago Cubs.
The Astros offense has really started to mesh over the last few days, scoring 10+ runs in both games against the Padres and has pushed the Astros into a 3 game win streak. Miguel Tejada has been outstanding. Words can hardly describe the way Miggy has hit over the past few days. Starting with the last game of the Rockies series, Tejada is a combined 10 for 15 with 1 HR, 3 doubles and 7 RBI's. Tejada's average is now up to .370. The Astros overall tonight hit the ball very well with the only Astros starter to go hitless on the night, was Brandon Backe.

Other Notables
- Matsui : 2-5, 2 RBI's
- Erstad : 2-5, RBI
- Berkman : 2-2, 2 BB, 2 RBI
- Blum : 2-5, RBI
- Pence : 1-4, HR, 2 RBI
Pitching wise, Brandon Backe came back strong tonight after getting completely destroyed in his last outing. Tonight Backe pitched 7 strong innings allowing just 3 runs with 4 strike outs. Brandon left after the 7th inning with a 7-4 lead, but unfortunately ended the night with a no decision as the bullpen gave up 4 runs to put the Padres ahead for the 9th. Brocail did the most damage by allowing 4 earned runs and Valverde earned his 3rd blown save of the season and stole a win from Backe(also V's 3rd win of the season).

Way to Go Stros!
I could get used to this kind of offense all season! Let’s carry the big sticks to Cincy. Berkman should have a big series there, he has a great history of hitting well there!

hard to blame Valverde for anything....
in this game. That is about the toughest blown save you can get: Valverde came into a 1 run game with runners on 1st and 3d with 1 out. He didn’t give up a hit to get a blown save. He had his first 1-2-3 9th inning, which has to be encouraging.

i agree
the only thing he could do was strike out the first batter to not get a blown save. I saw Lidge come in one time with runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs in which he gave up a double play ball and a strike out for a blown save. Sometimes you just can’t blame them for a blown save. But still, they get paid good money, he should have struck out them for the last 2 outs :)

so Blum
doesn’t get credit for his HR? it’d be nice if he got on base a bit more often, but he’s slugging higher than he has since the last time he was an Astro (the last time he was really any good). two more dingers and he’ll have tied his highest season total since 2004. i’d have to guess that the Astros are pretty happy with his performance so far.
yeah Valverde got “credit” for Brocail’s blown save (really, they were all his ER), but i’m a bit encouraged at his last few outings. even when he let a couple baserunners on Sunday, it was a 3-2 walk and a dribbler infield hit. hopefully he’ll rattle off a few more solid outings and have his confidence fully restored. he seems like a guy that really relies on emotion and momentum.
anybody else quickly becoming a Matsui fan? if he can continue to do good things in front of Miggy, Lance, and Kabong, he’ll be scoring a LOT of runs this year. now we just need Bourn to pick up his OBP and we’ll have a truly deadly lineup.

Yeah
Papa Grande is EXTREMELY emotional—last year was really the first time that he got that house in order.

there's no prescedent
for anything happening anytime within the next year or so. even if he’s indicted, the only time he might miss would be to attend depositions and the such. he wouldn’t actually do any time until probably when his contract with us is up (assuming it’s not extended, which i wouldn’t be surprised if it is, if he puts up MVP-type numbers this year). i wouldn’t worry about that. i also wouldn’t worry too much about him getting deported. it’s just not gonna happen. not anytime soon anyway.
