Houston Astros at San Diego Padres, 9:05PM CDT

Houston Astros @ San Diego Padres

Your Houston Astros take on the San Diego Padres for game 2 of this young baseball season.  The Astros are sending Brandon Backe to the hill on a comeback mission to prove to everyone that he's healthy, and prove that he can stay healthy for an entire season.  Hopefully in that process, he'll also put up good numbers and win a lot of games for the Astros.

Pence, Berkman, Lee and Wigginton are all looking for their first hits... with production out of those 4 like we got last night, the Astros are doomed another losing season.

Lineups
Houston San Diego
1. Bourn, CF 1. Giles, RF
2. Pence, RF 2. Iguchi, 2B
3. Berkman, 1B 3. Kouzmanoff, 3B
4. Lee, LF 4. Gonzalez, A, 1B
5. Tejada, SS 5. Hairston, CF
6. Wigginton, 3B 6. Greene, SS
7. Loretta, 2B 7. Bard, C
8. Towles, C 8. McAnulty, LF
9. Backe, P 9. Young, P

Pretty much the same lineups as last night, only Towles is in for Ausmus.  No predictions for me tonight...  Go 'Stros!

Ths early in the season I'd rather have the Astros announcers; but so be it.

Is everyone back and accounted for?

Umm.

Is the game not televised? I'm showing Basketball on FSN, some crap on 2... more crap on Sports center..

From looking at the schedule

There are a lot of games on my20. I hope these blackouts are just a glitch.

Note - not really blackouts, more of rainbow-outs. Can't see jack but can hear everything.

Iguchi at first, Fly to deep right center, short of the warning track.

It's high; plenty of time for Bourn and for Pence to get there. After the catch Iguchi tried for second. Bourn almost casually one hopped the ball to second getting Iguchi by 6 feet.

Tejada

Quickly 0-2 on Tejada and Young goes upstairs, Tejada fishes and fouls it off behind. Next pitch, fast ball outside, another foul.

Now, 0-2 count, Tejada pokes a slider to Greene at short for out 1.

I'm eating fruitloops at 9:21PM and watching Astros.. heaven.

Wiggy

Starts bat held high, 0-2 on Wigginton pretty fast. Next, Young comes up high and Wiggy fouls it off. Next pitch in the dirt about 5' in front of the plate... Wiggy holds off to bring the count to 1-2. Now Young K's Wiggy on a slider out of the zone low.

Towles

Runner on 1st(Loretta.. not sure why I'm telling you it.. you can look up and see it, but there it is regardless) with 2 outs.

I don't know why... but to me, Towles looks like Gregg Zaun... I could be totally off, but that's who he reminds me of.

Young keeps Loretta honest at first by throwing over and then throws a 1st strike to Towles who watches. Young to first again(Has Loretta ever stolen a base? Why waste the time?). Young delivers again, fast ball just off the corner outside. Next high and inside(another fastball) for a 2-1 count. Just looked it up, Loretta has stolen 46 bases in his career.. 1 last year and a career high 9 in 98.

Next pitch, strike down the middle.. dont think Towles has lifted his bat off the shoulder. He has now as he fouls off an outside pitch... count 2-2

Towles now pops up to Gonzalez to end the inning.

Fair comparison

With the pop in his bat, you might have nailed it. I just hope he's more consistant at the plate that Zaun was.

You remember that walk off grand slam Zaun hit a few years back?

Hairston

Angel Hernandez is the home plate umpire tonight... me hates him!

Backe looks pretty strong, has good form and hitting 92-93 on the fast ball.

Hairston has a 1-2 count and Backe tries a breaking pitch over the plate, Hairston fouls it off to keep the count the same. Backe showing some good movement on his breaking stuff, just threw one that I thought was going to hit Hairston that broke just inside for ball 2. Now 3-2 after another ball by Backe. Come on K! Nope, fastball for another foul ball. Next pitch, I think it was a fastball, high on the outside of the plate, Hairston swings and flies out to Lee for out # 2

Greene

Fastball fouled down the 3rd base line, then a breaking ball popped up behind 2nd. Bourn really misread it off the bat and took a step back, then sprinted in to watch it drop about 10' in front of him. 1st hit of the night.

2 outs, runner on 1st for Bard.

1-1 count.. my fruitloops are gone.. Backe tries outside and Bard fouls it off into the stands for 1-2.

Next pitch, fastball high on the outside edge, Bard takes it that way and lines a single to left field moving Greene to 2nd, runners on 1st and 2nd now with 2 outs.

Wiggy

Wiggy Wiggy Wiggy... 1st pitch, slider down and in, swung, wiffed strike 1. Now Young throws over to keep Lee from leading off too much. Next, another slider, this one low... Wiggy swings again and wiffs.. strike 2. 0-2 count, Young looks Lee back again at 1st. 3rd pitch, another slider, swung, fouled off by Wigginton. Finally a fastball from Young, this one high to take the count to 1-2. Now 2-2.. Another slider, low, swung, fouled again. Wigginton needs to learn to read that pitch, otherwise he's going to strike out a lot... Now, another fastball, high to fill up the count, 3-2. Will Lee go? I'd say... no.. Young thinks maybe and throws over again. Lee, 4 step lead, goes.. ball 4 high.

My goal for the night is when I say "count is... " that I don't type, "account is".. not sure why, but I do it all the time.

crazy fan

the OF wall in right-center field is chain link and apparently fans can watch from behind it. When Bourn made that catch on the run near the wall, a fan ran up from the other side, right up against the fence as Bourn caught it. It wasn't a huge deal, just some guy acting stupid.

easy to run on Bard..

Padres were the worst team at stopping the steal last year. combination of pitchers who are bad at it, and Bard/Barrett at catcher.

Pence

Young throws over twice and then delivers to the plate for a high fastball, ball 1. 5 of his last 6 pitches have been high fastballs.

1-0, Young delivers again, this time for strike 1. Bourn still on 1st. I think hes trying to get Young's timing down. Young throws over again, Bourn back easily standing up.

Fastball in, Pence gets jammed and flies out to Iguchi at 2nd.

Berkman

Young does have sort of a slow delivery to home, even from the stretch. He kind of keeps the ball behind is back longer than most.

1st pitch strike to Berkman, then Young throws over again. and again.. Next pitch, Berkman flies out to center field. Right off the bat you could see the frustration in Lance as he throws the bat down and "jogs" to 1st.

Bourn should go 1st pitch.

And he does, throw is in front of the bag in the dirt. Make that 3 strolen bases for Bourn.

Bourn's techniquie.. 3 fast/choppy steps and then longer strides... slides feet first over the bag and uses his hands to stay in contact behind him.

1st pitch to Tejada, ball1.. 2nd pitch, flied out to Hairston in CF to end the inning.

My thing is...

he gets it down, they walk Towles, and you're forced to take out Backe. (You can't sacrifice and then NOT give Cruz a shot.)

It takes the bat out of Loretta, Towles and then you're in the bullpen.

by TexSkins on Apr 1, 2008 11:00 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

x

I see your point, but to play manager's advocate, bases loaded with a pinch hitter at the plate and one out seems more likely to set up a big inning than runners on first and second no outs with your three worst hitters up. In that situation, if Cruz Jr can get on base, Houston probably ties the game and they still have runners on with the top of the order up and one out. Whereas by just letting Loretta and Towles swing away, you're depending on two rather weak hitters to drive in the runners. And hell, you're probably going to have to pinch hit for Backe anyway if those two get on base.

This whole conversation is the main reason that I wouldn't ever want to be a manager. I'd be secondguessing myself all the time.

I would like to see what would have happened if he pitched another inning, considering his last spring start in which he pitched 5 scoreless innings and then blew up in the 6th. I would like to see that he can pitch well, and deep, into games.

Yes, the offense is a big disappointment. Lack of clutch hits seem like the biggest problem. The Astros had traffic on the bases. But no one came through with RISP.

Hey Thanks for the PBP

My cable company tells me they're gonna have the MLB package soon I wonder if I can believer that, but they don't have it yet, anyway. So while I was able to catch the opener, I couldn't watch last night. . . . though the Marlins game was good, Andino's homer in extras beat the Mets, kick ass.

But yeah, the PBP is a help. I went to the Chronicle and read Justice's column, and saw some guy on the forums there talking about how Chris Young was "an average pitcher at best" Never mind how he's led the NL in BAA the last two years.

There oughtta be a test you take to post on a baseball forum, I swear.

Anyway, I was like, why mess with these clowns, head over to TCB. . . sure enough, there was a rich and meaty game thread awaiting me.

So what's the deal on Bourn? 3 walks, 3 stolen bases, but a .167. He's gonna need to hit the ball or the walks are gonna disappear.

Pence and Lee both looked lost on Monday, and at least from the PBP it doesn't sound like they did much better Tuesday. It's kind of scary, we expect so much from Pence, a sophomore slump could be not necessarily ugly, but real depressing anyway.

Get 'em Wandy!

I'll end up liking Tejada. . . . just give me some time

I may sound ignorant

But I'll take Bourn's .167 BA and .444 OBP all season long :) Bourn is working the count pretty well, just not doing much with the stick... but he's made up for it with is defense and baserunning.

Good to see ya Rastro.

Go 'Stros!
