Houston Astros at San Diego Padres, 9:05PM CDT
Houston Astros at San Diego Padres, Apr 1, 2008 9:05 PM CDT
Your Houston Astros take on the San Diego Padres for game 2 of this young baseball season. The Astros are sending Brandon Backe to the hill on a comeback mission to prove to everyone that he's healthy, and prove that he can stay healthy for an entire season. Hopefully in that process, he'll also put up good numbers and win a lot of games for the Astros.
Pence, Berkman, Lee and Wigginton are all looking for their first hits... with production out of those 4 like we got last night, the Astros are doomed another losing season.
| Lineups | ||||
| Houston | San Diego | |||
| 1. | Bourn, CF | 1. | Giles, RF | |

Pretty much the same lineups as last night, only Towles is in for Ausmus. No predictions for me tonight... Go 'Stros!

Ths early in the season I'd rather have the Astros announcers; but so be it.
Is everyone back and accounted for?
by Joe in Birmingham on Apr 1, 2008 9:05 PM CDT reply actions
Umm.
Is the game not televised? I'm showing Basketball on FSN, some crap on 2... more crap on Sports center..
Schedule shows MLB.TV and my20.. WTF is my20?
Go 'Stros!
Game is being blacked out from time to time
If this doesn't stop... I'm not watching this...
Go 'Stros!
From looking at the schedule
There are a lot of games on my20. I hope these blackouts are just a glitch.
Note - not really blackouts, more of rainbow-outs. Can't see jack but can hear everything.
Go 'Stros!
Berkman
3-1 count quickly, then swings through a pitch to take it to 3-2. Young tries another fast ball and Berkman gets his first hit of the season on a blistered line drive to right field. Nice swing, nice hit, easy double.
Go 'Stros!
Lee
Game blacked out again for me.. not seeing Lee.. but I can hear JD and Brownie. Now getting a my20 spash screen with sound. Sounds like Lee grounded to Greene at short to end the inning.
Go 'Stros!
video problems
they must be having video problems all over. i'm intermittently getting a splash screen with the teams logos on it and just audio too.
AFK for a few
no video, I just got home from work at about 8:50 and I'm starving.. If someone wants to do PBP for a few minutes(that can actually see the game), go for it.. I'll releive you in a few.. if not.. well, we'll be missing some PBP.. no big deal ;)
Go 'Stros!
my 20 is a joke
so was last year on channel 2 or 51
My first mistake was assuming you knew what I was talking about.
I didn't even know it was a channel until 15 minutes ago
Now I know it isn't a channel :)

Bourn shines again
Nice throw to beat a runner at second.

Iguchi at first, Fly to deep right center, short of the warning track.
It's high; plenty of time for Bourn and for Pence to get there. After the catch Iguchi tried for second. Bourn almost casually one hopped the ball to second getting Iguchi by 6 feet.

Tejada
Quickly 0-2 on Tejada and Young goes upstairs, Tejada fishes and fouls it off behind. Next pitch, fast ball outside, another foul.
Now, 0-2 count, Tejada pokes a slider to Greene at short for out 1.
I'm eating fruitloops at 9:21PM and watching Astros.. heaven.
Go 'Stros!
Wiggy
Starts bat held high, 0-2 on Wigginton pretty fast. Next, Young comes up high and Wiggy fouls it off. Next pitch in the dirt about 5' in front of the plate... Wiggy holds off to bring the count to 1-2. Now Young K's Wiggy on a slider out of the zone low.
Go 'Stros!
Towles
Runner on 1st(Loretta.. not sure why I'm telling you it.. you can look up and see it, but there it is regardless) with 2 outs.
I don't know why... but to me, Towles looks like Gregg Zaun... I could be totally off, but that's who he reminds me of.
Young keeps Loretta honest at first by throwing over and then throws a 1st strike to Towles who watches. Young to first again(Has Loretta ever stolen a base? Why waste the time?). Young delivers again, fast ball just off the corner outside. Next high and inside(another fastball) for a 2-1 count. Just looked it up, Loretta has stolen 46 bases in his career.. 1 last year and a career high 9 in 98.
Next pitch, strike down the middle.. dont think Towles has lifted his bat off the shoulder. He has now as he fouls off an outside pitch... count 2-2
Towles now pops up to Gonzalez to end the inning.
Go 'Stros!
Fair comparison
With the pop in his bat, you might have nailed it. I just hope he's more consistant at the plate that Zaun was.
You remember that walk off grand slam Zaun hit a few years back?
Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz!

I'll end up liking Tejada. . . . just give me some time

no radio in austin
KVET is playing some other baseball game, I assume it's Longhorns. I'm listening to scratchy KTRH and following on Gamecast
i'll check
tried San Antonio, Temple and somewhere else w/ no joy. KTRH is coming in decent, at least for now. fades in and out sometimes. I'm going to have to spring for the $15 audio, just can't until next week prob.
Dealt with the same
Until a season ago when 760 here in SA started airing all the Stros games, I used to have to tune into 1420 KGNB out of NB.
Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz!
MLB.TV
I'm assuming it still blocks the TV stream using MLB.TV if you're in Austin, correct? I tried it season before last and couldn't watch. No cable right now, so I'm SOL.
College Station
Anyone know whats going on in CS? I saw a broadcast schedule for the astros games on the suddenlink leased access channel (22) and it said they'd play all of the myfox20 games including the one tonight, then come 9:00 its the rangers
I wish
I could wath this game live, too. It's a shame that I have to watch it on mlb.tv on archive.
Bottom 2nd
Looks like Gonzalez, Hairston and Greene due up in the inning. Could be wrong, just going off the box score since I missed the bottom of the first due to my20's foil falling off their TV antennae.
Go 'Stros!
Gonzalez
It is indeed Gonzalez who swings and flies out to Lee on the first pitch. Lee and Bourn both calling for the ball, but El Caballo takes control and catches easily.
Go 'Stros!
Hairston
Angel Hernandez is the home plate umpire tonight... me hates him!
Backe looks pretty strong, has good form and hitting 92-93 on the fast ball.
Hairston has a 1-2 count and Backe tries a breaking pitch over the plate, Hairston fouls it off to keep the count the same. Backe showing some good movement on his breaking stuff, just threw one that I thought was going to hit Hairston that broke just inside for ball 2. Now 3-2 after another ball by Backe. Come on K! Nope, fastball for another foul ball. Next pitch, I think it was a fastball, high on the outside of the plate, Hairston swings and flies out to Lee for out # 2
Go 'Stros!
Greene
Fastball fouled down the 3rd base line, then a breaking ball popped up behind 2nd. Bourn really misread it off the bat and took a step back, then sprinted in to watch it drop about 10' in front of him. 1st hit of the night.
2 outs, runner on 1st for Bard.
Go 'Stros!
Bard
1-1 count.. my fruitloops are gone.. Backe tries outside and Bard fouls it off into the stands for 1-2.
Next pitch, fastball high on the outside edge, Bard takes it that way and lines a single to left field moving Greene to 2nd, runners on 1st and 2nd now with 2 outs.
Go 'Stros!
that punk Bard
has hit bloops through 3rd 3 times now
My first mistake was assuming you knew what I was talking about.
not in reputation
but has taken 3 fastballs out of the catchers glove in these two games. One double(grounder) past 3rd and 2 bloops in front of Lee
My first mistake was assuming you knew what I was talking about.
Angel Hernandez -- GRRRR
I keep waiting for im to bait some player or manager. I thought he tried to ge to back in the first. How does he keep his job ?

Backe
Backe, still looks like a hitter, takes the first to pitches for a 1-1 count. Next pitch, high for ball 2 and then another inside that Backe fouls off for strike 2. Next pitch, strike out for Backe.
Go 'Stros!
Bourn
Tries the Willy-T approach and drops a bunt 1st pitch, but rolls foul about half way down the line. Next pitch, fouled off for strike 2. now, fastball inside, swung, fly ball to center for out 2.
Go 'Stros!
Pence
Come on Pence... Let's break this 0fer.
1st pitch, slider(maybe), check swing foul for strike 1. Next, another slider that Hunter swung over for strike 2. Now fast ball way high(89MPH) for ball 1. Another fastball outside for ball 2. Now, inside(maybe backdoor slider), Pence fights it off and punches it over a leaping Iguchi at 2nd for his first hit of the season.
Go 'Stros!
Berkman
Pence with a 3-4 step lead, Young sees him and throws over. Lance ended his 0-fer in the first with a double, lines out to left field to end the inning.
Go 'Stros!
Your memory
is better than mine ;)
I can't remember his swing last night, much less last season hehe
Go 'Stros!
Bottom 3rd
Game still tied 0-0 with both pitchers givin up 2 hits.
Padres have up Young, Giles and Iguchi in the inning.
Go 'Stros!
Young
Takes 2 straight fastballs for strikes to go behind in the count early. Now, slider low that is swung over by Young for Backe's first strike out of the game.
Blum, best moment in a game was hitting the game winning homer against the Astros in '05...
Go 'Stros!
Giles
Missed the first 2 pitches, but the count is 1-1, now 1-2 after an inside fast ball that was watched by Iguchi. Now, high fastball, popped up pretty high to 3rd, Wigginton catches just at the grass for out 2.
Go 'Stros!
Iguchi
Didn't see it(fixing a stupid mistake on my part that nobody probably seen), but Iguchi got out for a quick 3rd inning by backe.
Go 'Stros!
first runs of the season would be nice
didn't we supposedly upgrade our vaunted offense this off-season?
Top 4th
Lee, Tejada and Wigginton due up in the inning.
Astros haven't done any damage on the board yet, but have Young up to 49 pitches so far.
Go 'Stros!
Lee
1-0 count as Lee uses all of his might, to swing and miss at a fastbal outside. Next pitch, fastball in, Lee Pops to left center, too short for mcAnulty in left and Greene doesn't really try for it, so Lee gets a single to lead off the inning.
Go 'Stros!
Tejada
Takes first pitch ball and then swings at the next and pops it up to Giles in shallow right. 1 out
Go 'Stros!
Wiggy
Wiggy Wiggy Wiggy... 1st pitch, slider down and in, swung, wiffed strike 1. Now Young throws over to keep Lee from leading off too much. Next, another slider, this one low... Wiggy swings again and wiffs.. strike 2. 0-2 count, Young looks Lee back again at 1st. 3rd pitch, another slider, swung, fouled off by Wigginton. Finally a fastball from Young, this one high to take the count to 1-2. Now 2-2.. Another slider, low, swung, fouled again. Wigginton needs to learn to read that pitch, otherwise he's going to strike out a lot... Now, another fastball, high to fill up the count, 3-2. Will Lee go? I'd say... no.. Young thinks maybe and throws over again. Lee, 4 step lead, goes.. ball 4 high.
My goal for the night is when I say "count is... " that I don't type, "account is".. not sure why, but I do it all the time.
Now eating baked Lays.. Sour Cream and Cheddar(I know.. you don't care)..
Go 'Stros!
Loretta
Come on Mark. A nice single would be excellent.
Loretta first pitch, meatball down the center.. swings through it for strike 1. Now 1-1, next pitch, breakingball inside for ball 2 and then fastball outside for ball 3. Green light? I'd say.. sure why not. Yep, fastball down the middle, Loretta gets a pretty good swing on it, but lines to Koozie at 3rd for out 2. Towles up.
Go 'Stros!
Towles
Takes 1st pitch strike. I think he needs to be a little more aggressive.. Just my early opinion. Next pitch, fastball outside and low for ball 1 and then, slider in the dirt, knocked down by Bard and both runners sit still. 2-1 count. Ball 3 on a fastball outside. I'd like to see Towles get a pitch to hit here.. Backe is a good hitting pitcher.. but that's it.. just a good hitting pitche. Next pitch, slider low for ball 4. Let's go Backe!
Go 'Stros!
Backe
takes 1st pitch, fastball down the chute for strike 1. Next pitch of the breaking variety, Backe swings for the fence, misses for strike 2. 1-2 count, slider outside and low, Backe tries to check his swing, but fails as Eric Cooper (the 1B ump) says he went and calls him out. Inning over
Go 'Stros!
Raymond and Dolan
Just said that pretty much everyone has a green light -- including El Caballo.
Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz!
Dang
no wholes for the Astros so far this year
My first mistake was assuming you knew what I was talking about.
Kuuuuuuuuuuuz
Sorry Solis ;)
1st pitch, ball 1 and then next pitch fastball(86, is he losing steam?) for ball 2. Now fastball high for 92. nope, not losing steam.
3-1 count after a fast ball for strike, Koozie lines the next pitch just to the right of a stretching Loretta for a single.
Go 'Stros!
Gonzalez
Count quickly to 2-0 so Towles heads out and mentions the cute girl behind home plate. Backe agrees and Towles heads back to the plate. Next pitch, fastball, swung, driven deep into centerfield, but not deep enough as Bourn pulls it in right before the warning track. Koozie heads back to first.. out 1.
Go 'Stros!
Hairston
Backe's fastball ranging from 86-93, and his slider is around 86. Pretty good velocity to trick people up when changing between pitches.
Hairston works the count to 2-1 and then takes a Backe fastball into the seats in left field. No doubter there to give the Padres a 2-0 lead.
Go 'Stros!
Greene
Backe quickly goes 2-0 on Greene and then Green hits one hard to left field, looks like it's got enough to go to, but no.. hits the top of the fence and bounces back to Lee for a double.
Go 'Stros!
Bard
Runner on 2nd, 1 out
Backe actually gets ahead of bard 0-2 and then forces him to pop out to Loretta at 2nd. 2 out.
JD is now calling for an intentional walk to McAnulty to get to Young...
Go 'Stros!
McAnulty
No int walk to McAnulty, Backe starts him with a slider outside for 1-0. Looks like they may be pitching around him though...Now here's the Int walk after getting down 2-0 on him.
Go 'Stros!
Young
Whoa.. Towles and Backe get mixed up on signs.. Towles hops up looking for high and inside fastball, Backe throws curve ball.. looks awkward, but falls in for strike 2. Next pitch, Backe strikes out Young for the 2nd time today.
Go 'Stros!
Bases Loaded, Two Out
Astros threaten. Will Brandon Backe drive in the Astros first run of the season?
No.

crazy fan last night
radio guys mentioned the guy who ran up to the fence when Bourn made the play last night. When I saw it at the time I thought it was pretty low class.
crazy fan
the OF wall in right-center field is chain link and apparently fans can watch from behind it. When Bourn made that catch on the run near the wall, a fan ran up from the other side, right up against the fence as Bourn caught it. It wasn't a huge deal, just some guy acting stupid.
Bourn
Count at 3-1 and then Young Walks Bourn. JD immediately says "That's a double". We'll see..
Go 'Stros!
Radio says it's "easy" to run on Young...
if nothing else, Bourn has his attention.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
easy to run on Bard..
Padres were the worst team at stopping the steal last year. combination of pitchers who are bad at it, and Bard/Barrett at catcher.
Pence
Young throws over twice and then delivers to the plate for a high fastball, ball 1. 5 of his last 6 pitches have been high fastballs.
1-0, Young delivers again, this time for strike 1. Bourn still on 1st. I think hes trying to get Young's timing down. Young throws over again, Bourn back easily standing up.
Fastball in, Pence gets jammed and flies out to Iguchi at 2nd.
Go 'Stros!
Berkman
Young does have sort of a slow delivery to home, even from the stretch. He kind of keeps the ball behind is back longer than most.
1st pitch strike to Berkman, then Young throws over again. and again.. Next pitch, Berkman flies out to center field. Right off the bat you could see the frustration in Lance as he throws the bat down and "jogs" to 1st.
Go 'Stros!
Lee
Bourn should go 1st pitch.
And he does, throw is in front of the bag in the dirt. Make that 3 strolen bases for Bourn.
Bourn's techniquie.. 3 fast/choppy steps and then longer strides... slides feet first over the bag and uses his hands to stay in contact behind him.
1st pitch to Tejada, ball1.. 2nd pitch, flied out to Hairston in CF to end the inning.
Go 'Stros!
astros gettting in range...
of rercords for most consecutive scoreless innings to start the season. The record is 17, and 2d most is 15 (1965).
Was thinking the same thing
The Astros are going to kill me... I know it's a pitcher's park, but seriously. I shouldn't have to sport a rally cap to break a scoring drought this early in the season.
Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz!
Iguchi
Quickly 1-1, looks like Brocail starting to stretch in the pen. Backe uses the next 2 pitches to K Iguchi.
Backe up to about 70 pitches.
Go 'Stros!
Koozie
Backe Starts off Kouzmanoff with 2 straight balls and then barely misses him with ball 3. Next pitch, fastball, strike inside corner for 3-1. JD just said 76 pitches, the next pitch makes it 77 that Kouzmanoff fouls off for strike 2. 3-2 count and Backe walks him on a slider outside and in the dirt.
Go 'Stros!
Radio guys talking about all the breaking stuff...
not too many fastballs.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Gonzalez
2 outs, runner on 1st and Backe starts him off with a strike, low, looked like maybe a change up. Next pitch, fastball(89), Gonzalez in front of it, fouling it into the 1st base bench for strike 2. Next, maybe change up, inside.. looked good enough for me, but not for Hernandez who calls ball 1. 1-2, Gonzalez gounds to Loretta who fields easily 2-3 steps to his left and throws to Berkman to end the inning.
Go 'Stros!
82 pitches...
think he'll get another inning? Does he still look sharp? Other than Geary, anyone up?
I need to just break down and get mlb.tv... I ask too many questions.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
He should..
He looks sharp enough to go at least 1 more... Only at 82 pitches, but I'm guessing he's on a pitch count..
Go 'Stros!
Top 6th
Tejada, Wigginton and Loretta due up in the inning. Combined they are a big 0-4 with 2 walks and 1 strike out.
Go 'Stros!
Tejada
Digs in, taps his bat and takes a first pitch strike from Young. Now 1-1 and Tejada rips one down the left field line.. pretty good pop, but goes foul off of the fence for strike 2. 1-2 count, fastball high from Young. He throws a lot of high fastballs for balls... next pitch, ball high for a full count. Brownie says 94 pitches on Young.. Next pitch, ripped through the hole between 1st and 2nd for a single.
Go 'Stros!
Wigginton
Runs the count to 2-0 and then rips one through the hole between short and 3rd for a single of his own... Alright now we got something going...
Pads have the pen working now to.. I think they said Thatcher
Go 'Stros!
Loretta
Come on.. single single single... Loretta squares to bunt and then pulls back for ball 1. Shit, next pitch, bunted, popped behind home; bard turns, throws down his lid and catches for out 1.
Go 'Stros!
Towles
Towles quickly to 2-0. Next pitch, fastball, outside corner of the plate, ripped foul into the stands on the 3B side. 2-1 count as Towles takes another pitch, this one fastball on the outside corner for strike 2. Now, slider foul to keep it alive and then another fastball(89), Towles swings and gets under it a little and flies out to LF. Runners still on 1-2, now 2 outs.
Go 'Stros!
Radio guys debating the move to take Backe out...
I can't keep them straight, but one says he'd keep him in for another inning (or two) while the other talks about how the opportunity to get something on the board is too good to pass up.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Astros are desperate to break the scoreless drought
I think I'll wait and see what happens and then comment ;) I know that's lame...
Go 'Stros!
Cruz
Cruz pinch hitting for Backe
Pretty good outing for Backe, 5 IP, 2 ER and 5 his with 3 walks and 3 K's.
Cruz has his 1st AB of the season, pops the first pitch foul. Next pitch, Bard sets up outside, Young throws inside for ball 1, now 1-1.
Come on Cruz!
1-2 after fouling off the next pitch.. make that 2-2 after another high fastaball. and then another for 3-2...and then a fastball down the middle, Cruz swings and looks to have struck out, but Hernandez says he got a piece and Bard can't handle it... Cruz still alive... Now, ball 4 on a fastball inside.. bases juiced for Bourn.
Go 'Stros!
Bourn
Thatcher in relief of Young
Now both Padres starting pitches have ERA's of 0 after their apperances.
Bourn takes fastball outside and then another fastball inside. Thatcher looking a little wild... next pitch, outside ball 3. A walked in run would be ok. Exactly what we got, 4 pitch walk to end the scoreless drought at 15 2/3 innings.
Go 'Stros!
Why are the Astros bunting??
It doesn't make sense. They need 3 runs.
Is everyone back and accounted for?
by Joe in Birmingham on Apr 1, 2008 10:53 PM CDT reply actions
Well they set up for...
scoring two runs with a bunt. I'm not saying I like the play. But it's not totally a bad idea with runners on 1st and 2d. I don't like Loretta sac bunting, in particular, because he is so slow.
My thing is...
he gets it down, they walk Towles, and you're forced to take out Backe. (You can't sacrifice and then NOT give Cruz a shot.)
It takes the bat out of Loretta, Towles and then you're in the bullpen.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
x
I see your point, but to play manager's advocate, bases loaded with a pinch hitter at the plate and one out seems more likely to set up a big inning than runners on first and second no outs with your three worst hitters up. In that situation, if Cruz Jr can get on base, Houston probably ties the game and they still have runners on with the top of the order up and one out. Whereas by just letting Loretta and Towles swing away, you're depending on two rather weak hitters to drive in the runners. And hell, you're probably going to have to pinch hit for Backe anyway if those two get on base.
This whole conversation is the main reason that I wouldn't ever want to be a manager. I'd be secondguessing myself all the time.
Giants
have not scored a run yet this season..
they are 15 ininngs in.
Hairston
Villareal pitching for the 'Stros now gets ahead of Hairston quickly, 1-2 and then strikes him out, breaking ball style outside for out 1.
Go 'Stros!
Greene
Once again, Villareal ahead of Greene, but Greene takes the next pitch and drives it into LF for a single to go 3-3 on the night.
Go 'Stros!
Bard
Villareal, pants hiked up to the knees hits about 90 or so on the fastball.
1-1 count, Villareal, fastball that Bard lines to Loretta for out 2. Loretta threatens to throw to first but holds off as Greene gets back easily.
Go 'Stros!
Top 7th
Astros cut the lead in half in the 6th and also scored their first run of the year, now have up Berkman, Lee and Tejada...
Go 'Stros!
Lee
Commercial break so the Padres can bring in Meredith. First ball was a ball, 2nd was broke Lee's bat as he grounded out to 2nd.
Go 'Stros!
Tejada
Show us your STRENGTH!
Meredith has a funky delivery, quickly goes 3-0 n Tejada... Don't even swing... make him throw you at least 1 strike... And he did, 3-1 count. JD questions me by saying "Taking all the way there, but it might have been a good time to turn him lose".. hindsight being 20-20, and seeing Tejada ground out... JD was probably right..
Go 'Stros!
That at bat reminds me...
of a time period last year when Berkman was first pitch swinging all the time (it seemed) with the same result....a pop up or lazy fly.
Gerut
Villareal still in for the Astros, Gerut in to bat for the Meredith.
Count goes 2-2 and Villareal forces a fly ball to Bourn for the 1st out.
Go 'Stros!
Giles
1st pitch, driven back.. back back back, Bourn with his back towards home reaches up and CATCHES! Nice over the head play by Bourn! Out 2
Go 'Stros!
Koozie
1-0 count, Padres have Bell up in the Pen, Astros have pretty much everyone standing up in the pen.. not sure who is warming up.
Now 2-0,as Villareal misses low for ball 3. Next pitch, right over the middle for strike 1. Villareal coming back has Kouzmanoff foul off strike 2. Count now full as Villareal gets Kouzmanoff to fly out to Pence to end the inning.
Go 'Stros!
Another stellar catch by Bourn
This one all the way to the centerfield wall -almost over his head and curving to his left when he caught it on the run. What an amazing first two games for Bourn.
Is everyone back and accounted for?
by Joe in Birmingham on Apr 1, 2008 11:27 PM CDT reply actions
very nice route to the ball
Especially for a ball over his head. Looked like the ball slice on him some. Bourn has been the best player in the league that only has a .200 batting average(non pitcher).
Go 'Stros!
Gonzalez
Watching commercials(I normally zone out), Comcast says they have the most HD... more than Satellite.. funny, Satellite says they have more then Comcast.. Odd...
Brocail in to pitch, quickly ahead of Gonzalez 0-2 and then goes up the ladder with a swinging strike out.
Go 'Stros!
Hairston
1st pitch, skied to left field in foul territory. Lee runs over to catch the fly and right before he gets to the foul wall, has the ball hit his glove, bounce off the wall. Fans behind the chain link fence in left giving Lee hell. Lee ignores them.
Count 2-2 after a nice slider by Brocail. Trevertime getting ready in the pen for the Padres. Hairston then works a walk.
Go 'Stros!
Greene
1 out, runner on 1st for Green.
After a few pitchings, count is 2-2 and Hairston goes.. sorry Hairston, Greene fouls it back to waste your energy. Still 2-2 and Brocail blows Greene away with a high 89 MPH fastball.
Go 'Stros!
Bard
Before the AB, Towles and Brocail talk on the mound. Fatherly advice? Doubtful... 1st pitch, Bard lines to CF for a single.
Go 'Stros!
McAnulty
Runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs as Brocail delivers ball 1. Then high for ball 2 and on the outside corner for strike 1.
Next pitch, McAnulty grounds to Tejada charges, grabs and clutches and throws to first but is not in time, but Hairston rounded 3rd too far and Berkman(actually paying attention) charges towards 3rd and throws Hairston out trying to get back to end the inning.. Way to go Lance

HD
having both direct tv and time warner cable, i can attest that direct tv has way more HD channels than cable.
comcast HD
on the web recently was comparison of Comcast HD signal to Verizon's FiOS service that showed significant degradation in the Comcast image. They were squeezing 3 HD signals into bandwidth that was designed for 2, in order to add more quantity.
san diego fans
that chain link fence or whatever it is sure is ridiculous. i don't think that should be allowed. you guys see them screaming at Lee?
Top 9th
Lets hope there is a bottom 9th in the very near future.
Astros have pinch hitter, Bourn and Pence due up to face Hoffman.
TV shows the replay of the play at 3rd which looks like Hairston got back safely.. (but we won't argue the call).

Erstad
Erstad in to hit for Brocail against Trevor Hoffman. Quickly goes to a 2-0 count and then 3-.. wait.. 2-1 on what looked like a very high strike call.. Next pitch, fastball at 87 on the outside corner that Erstad swings through. Count now 2-2 as Erstad swings and misses on (JD called it a changeup) a pitch in the dirt.

Pence
Hoffman starts Pence out with a slider outside to go 1-0. Next pitch fastball inside which looked good to me, but Angel says no way for 2-0. Now fastball, outside corner that Pence gets a piece of, fouling it off for strike 1. And then Pence taps a dribbler to 1st that Gonzalez fields right at the dirt, Hoffman is coming over to cover but Pence beats Hoffman to the bag by a split second SAFE!

OK, time to take a deep breath...
I know we are only 2 games into the season but this has not been a good start to the season. Granted we have faced last year's Cy Young winner and a pretty good pitcher - Young but again, there is no offense (an ongoing theme year to year but this year is supposed to be different). No one is hitting really...Oh well...let's hope they can pick up a W tomorrow.

Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Here's the thing...
Did anyone expect that we would have lost any games this year 2-1? Heh, I was really expecting this offense to get it going--just haven't been able to string any hits together.
Tough loss for Backe...
I didn't see it, but it seemed like he was having a pretty good game.
5 IP, 5 hits, 2 ERs, 3 BBs, 3 Ks... Not a bad night at all.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Backe pitched well.
I would like to see what would have happened if he pitched another inning, considering his last spring start in which he pitched 5 scoreless innings and then blew up in the 6th. I would like to see that he can pitch well, and deep, into games.
Yes, the offense is a big disappointment. Lack of clutch hits seem like the biggest problem. The Astros had traffic on the bases. But no one came through with RISP.
Hey Thanks for the PBP
My cable company tells me they're gonna have the MLB package soon I wonder if I can believer that, but they don't have it yet, anyway. So while I was able to catch the opener, I couldn't watch last night. . . . though the Marlins game was good, Andino's homer in extras beat the Mets, kick ass.
But yeah, the PBP is a help. I went to the Chronicle and read Justice's column, and saw some guy on the forums there talking about how Chris Young was "an average pitcher at best" Never mind how he's led the NL in BAA the last two years.
There oughtta be a test you take to post on a baseball forum, I swear.
Anyway, I was like, why mess with these clowns, head over to TCB. . . sure enough, there was a rich and meaty game thread awaiting me.
So what's the deal on Bourn? 3 walks, 3 stolen bases, but a .167. He's gonna need to hit the ball or the walks are gonna disappear.
Pence and Lee both looked lost on Monday, and at least from the PBP it doesn't sound like they did much better Tuesday. It's kind of scary, we expect so much from Pence, a sophomore slump could be not necessarily ugly, but real depressing anyway.
Get 'em Wandy!
I'll end up liking Tejada. . . . just give me some time
I may sound ignorant
But I'll take Bourn's .167 BA and .444 OBP all season long :) Bourn is working the count pretty well, just not doing much with the stick... but he's made up for it with is defense and baserunning.
Good to see ya Rastro.
