MLB Draft Notes
I remember someone asking the other day about the Astros 2008 draft picks. Over at the SBN site Minor League Ball, they're having a mock draft and the Astros were up at #10 a few days ago. There was an interesting discussion going on. I like the pitching available, but others seem to be more for some of the position players available. (For the record, they ended up going with Scheppers.) Thoughts?
And I was looking for the "official" draft order, but all I could find were a bunch of "mock" sites, all of which had different order. I know they have the #10... but I'm not sure after that. Can anyone fill in the details?

Does it matter who they draft
Drayton will just bow to the Selig old boys club, not go out of slot money and not sign the guy anyway.
I think MLB needs to implement slotting salaries anyway. The players have said they would support it. It means more money for the established guys instead of some guy throwing 100 in high school who is going to blow out his arm in 12 months.
Wow, I don’t remember stepping up on my soap box but I must have.
It's the next generation of Astros. Let's see if they can play like the men they are replacing.

Here...
let me help you down.
And you make a good point… but after sucking last year and getting the 10 selection, doesn’t Drayton have to spend money on at least the kid in the first round? Slotting or no, the number 10 overall is going to get a lot of money.
I dunno.I could be wrong.

After the intense...
criticism McLane has taken over last year’s draft-and justifiably so-I would be shocked if McLane doesn’t make sure that the draft picks get signed this time. I’m not saying he won’t stay within the slotting system, but I’m not sure that is devastating to the Astros’ draft this year, so long as the scouting group knows how to deal with that constraint. The Astros’ draft choices are high enough that they can pay good bonuses and stay within the slots. Also, I can’t imagine Wade taking this job unless he has assurance that he will be given the resources to rebuild the farm system.
I am counting on Wade to replenish the farm quickly. I like some of the changes he has made in the scouting/player personnel area. Those changes paid immediate results when Wesley Wright was drafted in the Rule 5. Maybe I am too optimistic, but I think the Astros will be successful in the amateur draft.
