well..
I’m a little worried about this series. In MLB 08 the Phillies hit like 10 home runs on me in the series and I couldn’t score any runs! I hope it turns out differently.
If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there are men on base. ~Dave Barry
Eaton topping out at 89 so far...
Tejada works it 2-2, shots one to right center… Berkman scores on the single, Lee to third. Apparently a good play to keep Lee from scoring and to keep Tejada out of scoring position.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Blum up...
1-0 Astros, staking Chacon to an early lead.
Blum works 2-0. Blum pops out in foul territory by first.
Radio guys talking about how Victorino is missing in that defensive outfield and about how they might be missing Bourn. BooyaShaka!
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...

Werth, Ruiz, Utley due up...
it’s kinda weird seeing a catcher batting 2nd. Especially one batting .211 and has an OBP off .250. Injuries will do that to you though.
Jenkins had been leading off for a few days there.
Radio guys remind us that today is both Jackie Robinson day, as well as tax day.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Werth lines one just foul...
Pence was close, but there is a wall there… sounds a lot like Wrigley’s right field but I’m not sure.
Werth works it full then fouls one off… Making Chacon work. Pops up to 3rd. 1 out.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Ruiz up...
by the way, if anyone wants PBP duties, I might actually have to do some work here in a second.
Chacon starts him off with a curve… apparently a good one. Then an 88 mph fastball. Chacon at 88 and Eaton at 89? Seems off.
Ruiz grounds out to Chacon quickly.
Utley comes up with 2 outs.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Chacon pounds the outside...
gets ahead 1-2. Breaking ball misses for 2-2. Apparently another good one. Utley hits one to right, deep but Pence is there. You don’t want to test the distance of the fences in this park.
End 1, 1-0 Astros.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Pence, Ausmus, Chacon due up...
Pence is now in the 7 spot. Hopefully, it’ll help him break out of his funk. Plus, with the always dangerous Ausmus behind him, he should get plenty of pitches to hit.
Riiight.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Takes a strike...
then flies out to center on the 2nd pitch. Good patience.
Ausmus up. His average is better than Pence’s (2-10 for Ausmus).
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Radio guys talking about Towles's hand...
apparently, he didn’t know he got hit until he heard it and looked down to see laces on his wrist. Says he’s good enough to PR, if not PH (might be a stretch for tonight.)
Ausmus lines out to right. 2 out.
Guys talking about Q, Coop was asking him if he kept in shape during his 10 day vacation. He only had 1 game at RR at C. Maybe he plays later in the week?
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Shawn Chacon
You know, I didn’t know Shawn Chacon was black until I read an article the other day that said so. I always thought he was hispanic or latino.
And he..
Grounds into a double play. :p

I'm back... for now.
Tejada leads off the 4th. Still 1-0.
Chacon at 37 pitches, Eaton at 47.
Tejada works to 3-0 before a 94 mph fastball for strike one. That’s more of the speed I expected for Eaton.
Works it full after a few fouls. Radio guys wondering what kind of scouting report the Phils have for Tejada.
Miggy walks.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Blum pops up the first pitch to Utley...
1 out.
Pence up. I bet he swings and misses for strike 1 on some sort of off speed pitch. Does Eaton have a slider?
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Nope...
takes for strike 1. I was close. Strike 2 is “high” according to radio guy.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Called strike 3...
Fastball down the pipe. Radio guys talking about how Pence is guessing too much.
The mighty Ausmus is up. He fouls the first one off.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Going back to Pence...
radio guys quote him as saying he looks for breaking stuff and reacts to fastballs. I’m not sure that’s how you draw it up.
Eaton working much slower according to radio guys. P.S. Yesterday was Ausmus’s birthday. The radio guy made a joke that was actually funny: when asked what he got Brad for his birthday, he said he left him alone. Radio guy #2 laughed a lot.
Ausmus flies out to center.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
This offense is going to live and die on these kids
If Bourn, Pence and Towles can’t come through at least some of the time, we won’t win very much.

Dunno what happened, but inning over.
Chacon pops out to right for the first out.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
When's the last time he stole a base?
It’s been awhile hasn’t it?

He's gotta tell Loretta to give him time to run
before Loretta grounds into another DP.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
He should..
punch Loretta in the face next time he does that. :p
by entropic soul on Apr 15, 2008 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Bourn goes 0-2 quickly...
then grounds one up the middle for a single. Radio guys talking about possibly stealing.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Loretta up...
before a pitch, Eaton throws over to first.
Then he pauses for what the radio guy calls the longest three man staredown. Then another throw over.
Pitch bounced to Bruntlett… GIDP. Inning over.
1-0 still. Quick inning for Eaton.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Howard, Burrell, Jenkins...
Howard goes 1-1, before a big swing and miss. 1-2. Curve gets him swinging.
1 out.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Takes for strike 2...
Radio guys comment on how Chacon is working quickly…
High heat gets Jenkins. Chacon has faced the minimum through 5. 55 pitches, 2 hits, 0 walks (I said zero walks), and 3 Ks. Not bad at all.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
We need
another Carlos Lee home run. Haven’t had one in awhile.

Lee puts one off Werths glove...
that’s twice. 1st and 3rd, no outs. Miggy up. Lee was stealing. Miggy flies out to shallow left. No runs.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Blum up...
didn’t swing on the first pitch this time. Needs to get one deep to score Berkman.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Heh...
Did you see that Lance managed to not break his bubble-gum bubble while going 1st to 3rd? LOL.
Blum and Pence up
We may as well call this inning over.

taking one, lining one hard… then rips it down the first base line.
2-0, Lee to third.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Pence up...
let’s “react” to one of those fastballs, eh? Fly deep center… great catch from Werth. Lee scores.
3-0.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
I mean...
did Pence just miss it? Or did he get it and it just died at the wall?
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Looked like a pretty good hit.
Open gameday and you can see the replay.

Feliz lines one off Blums glove...
he can’t get it in time to throw him out. Hit, runner on first.
Bruntlett goes 0-2 quickly.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Bruntlett bloops one over 2nd...
1st and 2nd, no outs. Pitcher spot due up.
Eaton bats? 95 pitches… I’d guess a PH. Yep, Dobbs.
Eaton is done. 6 IP, 3 ER, 7 hits, 2 walks, 3 Ks
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Tejada makes a play...
end of the threat. Chacon at 75 pitches through 6.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Alfonso Soriano Hurt

Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Chacon due up...
I hadn’t used gameday in a while. It’s a lot better than I remember.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Chacon K's...
then Bourn chops one to first. Howard beats him there… Radio guys make a joke about how it would have been bug hitting truck. They’re just so funny.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
You get that from the radio.. or gameday?
If that was from Gameday.. then it’s getting quicker.. only about 45 – 60 secs behind
Go 'Stros!
I was looking at Gameday...
and it showed the first 2 pitches to Lee as on the invisible guy’s belt. And Lee is not the generic shape of said invisible batter…
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Utley grounds out.
Chacon gets ahead of Howard… then walks him.
Burrell is up. Then is down on strikes.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
2 outs...
Jenkins up. 91 pitches already. Gameday says 94. Who knows? 90-something.
Jenkins gets one deep. Winds now blowing out again, at keast according to radio guys. Bourn gets it. Inning over.
3-0 still. Chacon should be done. He started to struggle in that inning. He has a 2.37 ERA for the season right now. I’ll take that.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Feliz flies out...
Bruntlett out.
Rollins PH for Durbin. Bruntlett steals on the 2nd pitch.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Werth up...
flies out to Pence in right.
Chacon goes 8 and is due up 2nd in the 9th. I say he’s done. 109 pitches. 8 IP, 0 ERs, 4 hits, 2 BBs, 5 Ks, a season ERA of 2.25. Not too shabby from the team’s 4th starter, eh?
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Bourn up...
and apparently Miggy gets the Lucchese boots. Radio guys getting some laughs.
Bourn walks. Go. Steal. Now.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
I'd rather see him come on for a save...
and have Berkman crush one off some sort of building outside the stadium, silencing the crowd.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
And the truth is...
that I still really loot for Lidge. I’d prefer he just get no work at all this series, or that he pitch an uneventful inning in a blowout by the Astros.
Nah
3 makes it a save opportunity. :) Which means more points for my fantasy team. :)

I heard Brownie mention
something about the Astros having 5 picks in the first 3 rounds in this year’s draft, including the 10th pick. I was just wondering if any of you guys knew the number of the other picks.

I’m talking about you Cooper. I KNEW we were gonna lose the game when Valverde came in, so it wasn’t even that painful, just kinda funny when I watched it unfold
If Wandy hadn’t had the Cardinals game stolen from him, I wouldn’t blame Cooper, but he did, so I do.
Stupid.
I'll end up liking Tejada. . . . just give me some time
14 games in
and I’m already not liking Cooper. He seems like he’s got no guts. I think Garner leaves Chacon in.
Bourn to Run!
I just don't know...
How I’m going to take another season where I never feel safe with a 3-run lead. UGH.
Well
you know Dierker would have.
JD says 90% of managers would have made the move. Maybe so but that means 90% of ‘em are stupid cowards.
It is a simple thing to bring out your starter and have the closer ready.
I'll end up liking Tejada. . . . just give me some time
Not upset about Chacon being pulled...
it’s just that if Valverde is struggling so much…why not break conventional wisdom and use a different reliever to close the deal?...
Brocail could have used an inning too.
..agonizing since 1983...
Perhaps
but we do know that after 7-1/3, when Cooper came out to talk to him, Chacon was emphatic that he was good.
And as I was watching the meeting on the mound I was thinking to myself his body language was saying “for the rest of the game.” not just the eighth
Even as I knew that Coop would go to Valverde anyway, and even as I knew that Valverde would blow the save, regardless of this “faith” that Cooper and his brethren feel they need to show their closers.
I'll end up liking Tejada. . . . just give me some time

If Valverde is sucking...
like Lidge, who will be replacement closer while he refinds his stuff?
Villareal? Brocail? Geary?
The thing Chacon did to win me over tonight was...
when Coop came out in the 8th before J-Roll and Chacon said with a smile, “I’m good, I got him.” I was a big fan of that.
and to answer someone’s question up there, I think the best replacement closer would be someone in the minors. Maybe Nieve.
Bourn to Run!
Hmm...
Well, it’s worth a try. Need to get Valverde to be pitching in reasonably safe outings in either middle or setup, find his poise again.
None of the above
..already obvious..they pay Valverde big money to do what the does..
he’s going to have to get lit a couple more times before anything happens…
will take a **-storm in the papers to get to that point…
After that…whoever is pitching best may get some appearances for awhile..
Until Houston is 10 games below .500 expect nothing.
..agonizing since 1983...
They're already
1 1/2 games behind Cincy, although it’ll be 1 after tonight, I should think.
I’m waiting on Kaz to see if we can get things together. Though he’s not too much.
I was just reading the Phils board for...
some reaction (Yeah, I like to torture myself) and they were saying that the winning run scored looked like he was out. Obviously I’m not watching the game on TV and just going by you guys and GameCast so what’s the verdict (not that it really matters) but was the play that close at home? Curious, that’s all…
Go Stros!
Biggio and Bagwell for the HOF!
Watching live I thought there was no question he was out
and even after watching the replay several times, I still think Ausmus got him. Let’s just put it this way. If that were an Astros player sliding into home, he would definitely be called out.
Bourn to Run!
Agree, as I watched it...
I was sure he was out, and JD was calling him out, and I thought “good,” then I looked down on the field and the umpire had the safe sign. Didn’t see a replay though. I wouldn’t be surprised if the umpire wanted to get out of the stadium without the Philly fans dumping tar and feathers on him.
throw was well ahead of the runner
but slightly off-line. watching it initially, because the throw was so far ahead of the runner, i thought he was clearly out, but i replayed it in slow-mo with my DVR and it was closer than i thought. Ausmus had to swipe for the tag, but i still think it was in time.
it’s immaterial though. we had a start go 8 scoreless and inexcusably blew it in the 9th. i tried to give Valverde the benefit of the doubt in his previous shaky outings, mostly becuase he hadn’t lost a game for us, but this one was rediculous. he gave up a home run and hit a guy before throwing his first strike. man, this one hurts.
by littlevisigoth on Apr 15, 2008 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions
Watching JD and Brownie
and I thought Jenkins was gonna be out as Miggy made the throw and Jenkins came down the line.
But when I watched the replay I thought he was safe. Way I saw it he didn’t beat the ball but he did beat the sweep tag.
But then again I’d become convinced that Valverde was going to lose the game, so that idea may have influenced the way I viewed the play at the plate.

..well no matter what..
Valverde had a bad appearance….from the get-go…

To top things off...
My wife came in and tried to ask me a question just as I was throwing off my headphones in disgust after the second HR (I watch on mlb.tv with headphones on). She thought I was just reacting to her coming in the room. That took a little explaining. Thanks, Jose.
Bright note...
Early starting pitching has been excellent….Oswalt will come around…(fingers crossed)
They scored enough runs to win tonight..
Just Valverde right now…a little Villareal…
Club could easily have 8 wins…..
..agonizing since 1983...
Very, very tough loss to swallow
at the same time it’s still only a couple of weeks into the LONG grueling baseball season. I’ve seen much worse starts from the Astros and seen them bounce back. The 38-10 record(something like that) to end the season in ‘04 with Beltran, the 15-30 start in ‘05 to make the World Series and let’s not forget the one that fell short in ‘06 when they made up like 9 games from the Cardinals in the last 2-3 weeks of the season to end up just falling short to the eventual champs.
So, there is still hope.
Bourn to Run!
OK
But in retrospect, the Opening Day loss last year where Lidge gave up the homer to Nady set the tone for the entire year, and in a sense the Astros never overcame it.
Not to be negative or anything like that. . . . . just saying that sometimes things change, and sometimes they don’t.

What I hated about the game...
is that I was really feeling good about the Astros headed into the 9th. I loved what Chacon was doing. The guy was showing that he can pitch….he is probably doing more pitching, as opposed to throwing, now than he ever did when he was younger and ran it up there at 95. I loved the Astros’ defense. It seemed like things were starting to fall into place. We finally had “pitching and defense” like Wade and Tal Smith talked about when they took over. And we had just enough of the offense clicking to get a win.
Then to have all those good feelings go down the drain. Man, that is disappointing. And I really don’t want to go through another year of Lidge-like problems. But what can you do?
Totally agree clack
This game seemed like the one to get us on track as a team.
Then Valverde blew it and were right back where we started.

I had no idea he had command of a curveball like that. I’ve said some bad things about Chacon in the past, and might be giving him too much credit now. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while, as Stros Bro likes to say.
But, man, Chacon is gonna get the benefit of the doubt from me for a good bit, here on out . . . .

Yep
He’s pitched well all season so far(given the season is young)... I wasn’t a believer in him after spring training(still not sure about it), but you have to give him credit for what he’s done so far. He doesn’t deserve an 0-0 record… He now has the lowest starters ERA on the team at 2.25, tied with Backe and just ahead of Wandy’s 2.33.
Go 'Stros!
Anyone here would have thought...
2 weeks into the season that the two worst pitchers on the team would be Roy and Valverde?
You could have gotten a ton of money off me for thta one…
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Hard to watch in person
I was at the game tonight representing in my Astros jersey and all, but that finish was hard to watch… Chacon pitched a brilliant game, and the middle of the order looked pretty good. It’s a shame that Valverde has blown two great starting pitching efforts now.
... out ...
And from where I was sitting, which was section 323, right behind home plate third base side, Geoff Jenkins looked out. Although I’ll be honest, I didn’t think there was going to even be a play at the plate initially.

Jonk from The Good Phight here. Tough loss for you guys. I wouldn’t be so thrilled about Chacon though, he was on tonight, but he is likely to implode.
This doesn’t make up for that Biggio shot, but it certainly takes some of the sting away.

Why not be thrilled?
We’ve gotten much more than we expected from him… but I don’t think anyone expects him to continue this all year.
