"[I was] awful, but the end result was good," said Backe, who described his performance as effectively wild. "Thank goodness I have good defense behind me, because it wasn't normal out there obviously, just a little offbeat today."

Not exactly
the quote you would expect when seeing a stat sheet that says 5 IP, no ER.

I Didn't Think Backe Was That Bad
Looked like he had good feel on his curve, threw a good slider, though I guess it's possible that his fastball ain't what it was.
Backe was dealing with a *very* tight zone, and threw a bunch of good pitches that not only weren't called, but didn't draw a swing because the hitters learned pretty early that the onus was gonna be on the pitcher.
Miller made more mistakes than Backe, but he, too, was working with a tight zone: at least the umpire was fair.
I'll end up liking Tejada. . . . just give me some time

..that he made in the interview after the game that was pretty funny - the interviewer said something like "you were very effective tonight" and he said, "Effective? Effectively wild, maybe."
