Burke Badenhop (0-0, 0.00) vs Wandy Rodriguez (0-0, 2.92)

Sunny. Winds blowing in from left field at 5-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 70.

Your Houston Astros send Wandy Rodriguez to the hill against Burke Badenhop for the Fish.  Badenhop is making his 1st career start and has only pitched 1 inning in the bigs.  I was trying to find a little bit of scouting on Badenhop and noticed he was 6' 5" and my first thought was... I bet this guy can bring it...  not exactly.  From what I've read, his fast ball is high 80's and he relies more on his breaking stuff to get batters out.  He's done well in the minors though racking up a 2.89 ERA in 67 games started with an 18-10 record... but he's never made a start above double-A before today.

The Astros are sending Wandy Rodriguez to the hill today to end the home stand.  Cooper says he intentionally scheduled Wandy when he did so he could have most of his starts at home and he'll completely miss the mini-road trip the Astros take next against the Phillies.  I guess that's smart seeing as Wandy had a 2.94 ERA at home last year and a 6.37 ERA on the road.  So far this year Wandy has started 2 games, went 12.1 total innings with 4 runs against.  His most impressive stat is his 12 to 1 strike out to walk ratio.  If Wandy can keep this up at home and just be a decent pitcher on the road, he could have of getting through an entire season with out me calling for his head...  maybe...

A win today will mean the Astros have finally won their 1st series of the season!

Wandilicious!!!

Today's weather is amazing.  Game time temp of around 70, not a cloud in the sky...  this is why living in Texas is so great!

Badenhop....

His name will create a lot of jokes if the fielder can't handle bad hops.

From your description he sounds like a pitcher in the mold of Jason Hirsh or Chris Young. Sometimes the really tall pitchers don't have to throw hard because the ball is coming from an elevated spot.

I am anxious to see the Astros win a series. Let's hope it happens.

by clack on Apr 13, 2008 11:41 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was actually thinking they might do this

when I was writing up the game thread... Pence hasn't been able to hit any breaking stuff so far and this pitcher is a breaking ball pitcher... This is one of the games that I would possibly have given him off. Erstad is also a lefty, so that helps a little as well. I'm sure Pence isn't happy about it... but if he doesn't start hitting, he'll be seeing a lot more off days...

I've got my Wandy shirt, though. I'm ready to go.

Wow

1st thing I hear of the Astros telecast is "Welcome to" and then a scrambled tape sound... beautiful..

No PBP for me today

Just not up to it today... kinda feeling under the weather a little and I think I'm gonna go lay down and watch the game...

If someone else wants to do it, more power to you. I'll drop in from time to time.

Wandy Strike Outs

Counting Wandy's strike outs today.

1. Hermida - Swinging strike

by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 1:10 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bourn

Called out on strike.
Ugh. He's becoming more and more disappointing as time goes on.

by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 1:15 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Loretta

Hit by a pitch so at least we have a baserunner.

by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 1:16 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Berkman

Flies out to CF and so does Lee

by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 1:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Both pitchers tied with one strike out a piece after one inning.

But Wandy has one hit against him. Otherwise the pitching lines are identical.

by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 1:20 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Another hit for the Marlins

CF Cody Ross hits a single with one out. That's 2 hits against Wandy. Hopefully he'll settle down now. :p

by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 1:24 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bad luck...

on Ross' hit. The bat splintered into many pieces and disrtracted Tejada momentarily, causing him to have a late jump....and allowing the routine grounder to get by.

by clack on Apr 13, 2008 1:25 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Badenhop with a 1 hop grounder

for 3d out with bases loaded. I think Wandy made an intentional unintentional walk before that.

by clack on Apr 13, 2008 1:28 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tejada caughtt sttealing

hit and run but Blum couldn't get a piece of sinkerball.

Erstad doubles

after Blum made an out. Wish Tejada had been on base. Very well hit line drive to base of wall in RF.

Wow...Towles HR!!!!!

2-0 Astros. Crawford Box shot, but not a cheapie. It got there in a hurry.

Towles just equaled Ausmus' 2007 HR #s...

"J.R. Drive"

Yesterday someone asked us to think of a nickname for J.R. Towles.

On of the announcers are the homeruns called it the J.R. Drive.

It struck me "J.R. Drive" actually is a good nickname for him. It has many meanings, including the fact he lives on J.R. Towles Drive.

nice defensive work

by Berkman and Wandy forr 3d out. Berkman did a good job snagging a grrounder that was already by him. Wandy had to execute a stutter step to catch the ball and get the out at 1st.

Michael Bourn

Willy T with power?

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Apr 13, 2008 1:50 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hope so.

Bourn won't achieve Willy T's batting average (most likely) because he won't have as many infield hits. But he definitely has more power potential.

by clack on Apr 13, 2008 1:51 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Both Towles and Bourn...

needed those HRs. They both had been struggling at the plate.

I needed those HRs

It's been a dispiriting start of the season.

Blum doubles.

Erstad up. 1 out.

by TexSkins on Apr 13, 2008 2:06 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Badenhop's fastball...

is anywhere from 87-91 mph. Radio guy says it might be the difference between 2 and 4 seemers.

by TexSkins on Apr 13, 2008 2:07 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Erstad grounds to 2nd...

Uggla with a bad throw, Blum to 3rd.

1st and 3rd, 1 out. Towles up.

by TexSkins on Apr 13, 2008 2:08 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Erstad demonstrates why...

hitters should run outt even routine grounders at full speed. Marlins would have gotten the out, despite the wide throw otherwise.

Just got up from a nap

JD/Brownie said

that it might be because Wright is hurt, they could use Sampson in the pen... although they also mentioned it could be because Sampson has been sick..

by Stros Bro on Apr 13, 2008 2:36 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Chacon should pitch

because Sampson pitched last out of those two. And then you don't want to hold Roy over for more than 5 days, so he won't skip his start day... Sampson is just out of luck in that case.

by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 2:39 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

holding Roy over for another day might not be bad seeing how he hasn't exactly been the Roy of old...
