Florida Marlins at Houston Astros, 1:05 PM CDT
Miami Marlins at Houston Astros, Apr 13, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
Your Houston Astros send Wandy Rodriguez to the hill against Burke Badenhop for the Fish. Badenhop is making his 1st career start and has only pitched 1 inning in the bigs. I was trying to find a little bit of scouting on Badenhop and noticed he was 6' 5" and my first thought was... I bet this guy can bring it... not exactly. From what I've read, his fast ball is high 80's and he relies more on his breaking stuff to get batters out. He's done well in the minors though racking up a 2.89 ERA in 67 games started with an 18-10 record... but he's never made a start above double-A before today.
The Astros are sending Wandy Rodriguez to the hill today to end the home stand. Cooper says he intentionally scheduled Wandy when he did so he could have most of his starts at home and he'll completely miss the mini-road trip the Astros take next against the Phillies. I guess that's smart seeing as Wandy had a 2.94 ERA at home last year and a 6.37 ERA on the road. So far this year Wandy has started 2 games, went 12.1 total innings with 4 runs against. His most impressive stat is his 12 to 1 strike out to walk ratio. If Wandy can keep this up at home and just be a decent pitcher on the road, he could have of getting through an entire season with out me calling for his head... maybe...
A win today will mean the Astros have finally won their 1st series of the season!
Today's weather is amazing. Game time temp of around 70, not a cloud in the sky... this is why living in Texas is so great!

Badenhop....
His name will create a lot of jokes if the fielder can't handle bad hops.
From your description he sounds like a pitcher in the mold of Jason Hirsh or Chris Young. Sometimes the really tall pitchers don't have to throw hard because the ball is coming from an elevated spot.
I am anxious to see the Astros win a series. Let's hope it happens.
I was actually thinking they might do this
when I was writing up the game thread... Pence hasn't been able to hit any breaking stuff so far and this pitcher is a breaking ball pitcher... This is one of the games that I would possibly have given him off. Erstad is also a lefty, so that helps a little as well. I'm sure Pence isn't happy about it... but if he doesn't start hitting, he'll be seeing a lot more off days...
Go 'Stros!
Unless you don't live in Houston
Then it's on channel f0x0rz. :p
I've got my Wandy shirt, though. I'm ready to go.

Wow
1st thing I hear of the Astros telecast is "Welcome to" and then a scrambled tape sound... beautiful..
Go 'Stros!
Ah. this game already happened.
It's a conspiracy!

No PBP for me today
Just not up to it today... kinda feeling under the weather a little and I think I'm gonna go lay down and watch the game...
If someone else wants to do it, more power to you. I'll drop in from time to time.
Go 'Stros!
Loretta
Hit by a pitch so at least we have a baserunner.

Berkman
Flies out to CF and so does Lee

Both pitchers tied with one strike out a piece after one inning.
But Wandy has one hit against him. Otherwise the pitching lines are identical.
Another hit for the Marlins
CF Cody Ross hits a single with one out. That's 2 hits against Wandy. Hopefully he'll settle down now. :p
Bad luck...
on Ross' hit. The bat splintered into many pieces and disrtracted Tejada momentarily, causing him to have a late jump....and allowing the routine grounder to get by.
Badenhop with a 1 hop grounder
for 3d out with bases loaded. I think Wandy made an intentional unintentional walk before that.
Erstad doubles
after Blum made an out. Wish Tejada had been on base. Very well hit line drive to base of wall in RF.
HR...
Towles just equaled Ausmus' 2007 HR #s...
"J.R. Drive"
Yesterday someone asked us to think of a nickname for J.R. Towles.
On of the announcers are the homeruns called it the J.R. Drive.
It struck me "J.R. Drive" actually is a good nickname for him. It has many meanings, including the fact he lives on J.R. Towles Drive.

nice defensive work
by Berkman and Wandy forr 3d out. Berkman did a good job snagging a grrounder that was already by him. Wandy had to execute a stutter step to catch the ball and get the out at 1st.
Michael Bourn
Willy T with power?

I needed those HRs
It's been a dispiriting start of the season.

So do I.
They are both on my Crawfish Boxes fantasy team and they have kinda sucked. Well, they haven't been horrible. Just not that great.

Willingham HR...
3-1 Astros. Apparently a no doubter, up on the train tracks.

Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
From the radio guys...
10 of the 11 Marlins runs in the series are off of HRs.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Badenhop's fastball...
is anywhere from 87-91 mph. Radio guy says it might be the difference between 2 and 4 seemers.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Erstad demonstrates why...
hitters should run outt even routine grounders at full speed. Marlins would have gotten the out, despite the wide throw otherwise.
Just got up from a nap
Feeling better now.. I see Towles went deep and even Bourn? WOW! They just replayed the Towles HR.. that's gone in any park.
Go 'Stros!
Another strike out for Wandy!
Hermida x2
Helms x2
Treanor
Uggla
Four more to go for my guess of 10 strike outs today.
Bot 6
Berkman Walks, then Lee singles and now we have an offensive threat. tejada up! No outs, let's go!
Well, that makes sense then.
Although maybe it's Roy who should be skipped in the rotation instead of Sampson. :p
by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions
JD/Brownie said
that it might be because Wright is hurt, they could use Sampson in the pen... although they also mentioned it could be because Sampson has been sick..
Go 'Stros!
Chacon should pitch
because Sampson pitched last out of those two. And then you don't want to hold Roy over for more than 5 days, so he won't skip his start day... Sampson is just out of luck in that case.
by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions
I dunno
holding Roy over for another day might not be bad seeing how he hasn't exactly been the Roy of old...
Go 'Stros!
That is true.
But of course that would never fly.

Bases loaded after infield single...
the hit from Miggy chases Badenhop.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Blum up
Just added him to my fantasy team. He better make some noise here. :)

Tankersley is on...
lefty to face switch-hitting Blum and left handed Erstad.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Let's see if the ghosts of the 2007 Astros
will come to haunt us... :p
by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Bases still loaded...
Tankersley done, Towles up.
2 outs. New pitcher is... Gardner? Maybe? Radio guys guessing.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Phillies tied it up...
4-4 bottom 6, 1st and 3rd with Utley up. Nobody out.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Against the Cubs that is...
And Utley breaks the tie with a Sac Fly. Situational hitting.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
I hope Towles
gets out or gets a big hit. I don't want Cooper to pull Wandy for a pinch hitter if we only score 1 run.
Not with Lee on second.
:)
In any case I just don't Wandy pulled.

Grand Slam
And he somehow automatically strikes out the side in the seventh. So they don't even play it.
by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Radio guys remind us...
that Backe's win last night was the first from a starter.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
I need Wandy to strike out four more
so my prediction will be correct.
What? Single? That's not right.
I would be surprised if he does though
Cooper is under the Phil Garner school of pitching, if you have a set up man and a closer, use them... every time.
Go 'Stros!
Aw
Now he's blocking Berkman stealing third. :)
by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions
That's 7 double for Berkman so far.
and 4 home runs..
Does he have any triples?
by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions
Well, there goes that.
Ok. now CRUZ gets another bases loaded chance.

Grah
I would have kept Wandy in until he gave up another run. Lame!

And somebody yesterday wanted Cruz
to replace Bourn in Center.
Cruz looked terrible in that at-bat

Blum and Cruz blow two bases loaded opportunies each.

Cruz fouls out...
'Stros leave the bases loaded in the last 2 innings. Hope that doesn't come back to hurt them.
Radio guys also remind us that the Astros haven't won 2 consecuative games...
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
He shouldn't be starting too much longer...
Rollins is supposed to come back Tuesday.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Thanks

Charleton Jimerson
The Mariners designated Jimerson for assignment. Any chance of the astros getting him back in our farm system?
Towles beaned in the hand
lookes like left pinky/ring finger area... Rex out there for a while then takes Towles out of the game.

Towles hit hard on the wrist...
Milo is very concerned. He said it was pretty loud.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Sounds like Quintero might be called up sooner than expected...
???
Hope not.
by entropic soul on Apr 13, 2008 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions
maybe
off day tomorrow, so we'll see... but I don't think Towles will be able to play for a day or two.. that looked like it hurt him pretty good. Even if it's not broken, his hand is probably going to be swollen for a few days.
Send Perez or Newhan back down.
Go 'Stros!
Ok
Then we have to put an end to this blown hit and run stuff. :p

Bourn
makes (probably) the last out for the Astros. He had a pretty good day though. 2 for 5 (.400 batting average) with 2 runs and an RBI.
Ok
So he's not "sick" anymore, right? So he should have a good outing, right?

Valverded tried
to give up a home run, but failed as Ross bounced it off the top of the wall in left center for a double.
Go 'Stros!
My radio feed is cutting out...
so I'll just assume Valverde did his job.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Valverde not even close to his target
Ausmus sets up outside about knee high... Valverde throws over the middle about shoulder high.
