Next Game

Florida Marlins Red-star
@ Houston Astros Red-star

Saturday, Apr 12, 2008, 6:05 PM CDT
Minute Maid Park

Andrew Miller (0-1, 12.91) vs Brandon Backe (0-1, 3.27)

Clear. Winds blowing in from center field at 5-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

The Houston Astros send Brandon Backe to try and right the ship against Andrew Miller of the Florida Marlins.  If the Astros think they are going to be anything close to a good team, they should be able to rough Miller up some.  In Miller's 2 starts this season he's only pitched 7.2 innings total and given up 11 earned runs.  Miller has yet to make it into the 6th inning this season.

Backe has pitched well so far this season going 11 innings over his 2 games started and given up just 2 runs in each game.  Backe will need to keep the ball in the yard today against the Marlins who belted 6 long balls yesterday against the Astros.

Miller looked very, very good...

against the Astros in spring training. He is one of the top LHP prospects in baseball, but it is probably too early for him to be in the MLs. But the Marlins are in no position to keep him in the minors. My recollection is that he didn't allow a run and K'd a bunch of Astros in his spring outing against them.

Backe escapes with no runs

in the 1st. But he had four hard hit balls--2 LDs to the warning track for outs and 2 singles, one of which almost took his head off.

Pence in lead off spot

K's, Loretta grounds out, and Berkman with a ground single past Ramirez.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 6:17 PM CDT reply actions

Carlos Lee

with single up the middle, almostt taking Miller's leg off, and runners on 1st and 2d.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Bloop single

by Tejeda drives in run. Close play at plate but Berkman slides to side of home plate. Ball fell between 2d and CF.

Matsui

scratched again from Corpus Christi's lineup.

Game not on TV again here

I'm sick of Comcast. I'm going to call Direct TV and see if they get the games. When they are supposed to

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 6:36 PM CDT reply actions

Ramirez

out on grounder to 3d which Blum shuffled to 2d.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 6:41 PM CDT reply actions

Cruz leads off

Astros 2d inning with double to LF..

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 6:41 PM CDT reply actions

Ausmus doubles home Cruz

for his first hit and RBI. 2-0 Astros. Ausmus with line drive to LF.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Pence K's for 2d out.

He looked equally bad in both at bats today....flailing at curveballs in the dirt. All he needed to do was make contact and he could have had an RBI.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 6:46 PM CDT reply actions

BERKMAN HR!!!!

Into LF Crawford Boxes...no doubter. 5-0 Astros. Note that this is against a LHP.

Now Lee grounds out for 3d out.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions

It's really hard watching...

Pence struggle like this, heh. He has to stop swinging at that first breaking pitch.

by BTastros on Apr 12, 2008 6:46 PM CDT reply actions

Uggla tried to bunt...

then swings away, and Blum picks his hard grounder at 3d.

I'm at work

:(

Will miss most of the game if not all.. Go 'Stros!

Back to back walks from Backe

He's not going to go six innings at this rate.

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 7:02 PM CDT reply actions

Backe

Gets out of the inning with no runs scoring. He's now at 62 pitches. Maybe he'll be our first starter to get a win.

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Way to go Pence!

Drew a walk. Gotta start somewhere

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 7:29 PM CDT reply actions

With 1 out, Pence...

has a 3-2 count and scurries to 1st base on a wild pitch. He was thinking 2d base, I guess, but didn't have a chance.

Now Pence is tthrown out on an attempted steal.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:30 PM CDT reply actions

Backe seems to have morphed...

into a breaking ball pitcher after his TJ surgery. His FB isn't going to scare anybody. If the curve isn't going in for strikes, he has BB problems.

Now on a 3-2 count, Loretta and Tejada turn a pretty DP. Tejeda takes the ball on the back hand and flips it backwards to Loretta who touches 2d and throws to 1st.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

After getting 0-2, Backe gives up

walk to Willingham. Jacobs with a ground rule double. Runners 2d and 3d. Astros saved a run because of the ground rule.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Cantu

should be Backe's last batter.

I would like to say.. but I doubt the bullpen could do much better.

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions

On Cantu..

Backe seems intent on hittting outside corner. All the FBs seem like the same place, but Backe has gotten 2 balls and 2 strikes on calls.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Cantu hit a high rainbow

to LF which everyone watches to see if it is a HR or not...but it is foul. Backe missed his spot but living a charrmed life so far.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

And so...

With a little luck, Backe makes it through five without giving up a run.

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 7:49 PM CDT reply actions

Finally...

Cantu with a hot grounder to Blum who cleanly picks it. Blum's defense is a welcome alternative to Wigginton, I must say.

And, on thatt sequence to Cantu, I can see why the pitchers like Ausmus. He always frames the ball well and moves his target from outside to inside and back, with each pitch.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:50 PM CDT reply actions

Berkman walks...

and Carlos with a line drive single in tthe hole at short, puts runnerrs on 1st, 2d.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:53 PM CDT reply actions

Tejeda foul

went into stands and Tejada seems upset/scared because he thought it might hurt someone in crowd. Tejada with grounder moves runnners up.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

grounder to 3d...

and Berkman in rundown....he keeps going long enough to allow runner tto move up.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Cruz walks

and Ausmus up with bases loaded.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions

It's bullpen time!!!

Exciting! How many runs will they give up today? I guess 6 because that would be just enough for us to lose.

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 8:05 PM CDT reply actions

Geary in the game...

he gave up some runs in last outing, but stuff still looked pretty good. I feel a litttle better about him.

Geary gets a pop up. 1 out.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:08 PM CDT reply actions

Geary gives up walk...

which bings in Gonzo as PHer for Miller.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Ramirez singles

through rightt side but runner held at 3d. 10 game hitting streak for Ramirez.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Uggla get a bit under it...

and Lee catches flyball a few steps in from warning track.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

"Bourn to Run"

he is the PHer for Backe.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Bourn can run....

but instead he walks to 1st.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Pence with 1st pitch pop up

but Cantu drops tthe ball in foul ground. Ruled error. Now he is down 0-2....come on Pence.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

OMG

He got two outs and still couldn't get on base.

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep bout to say that

Pence made two outs in the same at bat.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Bourn out at home

on grounder to 1st by Berkman. Bourn tried to tip toe on corner of bag, but was tagged. JD complains that Bourn didn't slide. Bourn may have been safe, but JD says you won't get that call if you don't slide.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Lee with bid for HR

but ball is caught near wall in R-CF.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Bourn...

You have to slide in that situation. He can run, but has very little baseball knowledge. Cruz jr. should be our CF.

Pence is the right-handed Ted Williams.

by backstop8 on Apr 12, 2008 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

don't know that I want cruz jr.

as regular CFer, but that was definitely a rookie mistake by Bourn.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Bourn not Cruz in center

Bourn covers so much more territory in Center; and is more exciting on the bases, I have not gotten tthe impression Cruz is that much effective of a hitter, either.

Geary gets 2 outs, gives up single...

then gets out of inning with grounder to Tejada.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:41 PM CDT reply actions

Good work today.

Need two more innings of good work from the bullpen.

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Astros hitting .197

with runners in scoring position. Only Rockies and Yankees are worse.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:43 PM CDT reply actions

Newhan pops up

3d out...I guess I missed one of the outs.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:47 PM CDT reply actions

Brocail

Gets 1st out of 8th inning on a flyball to Bourn.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:50 PM CDT reply actions

Brocail with K for 3d out

I still don't know how Brocail does it...his stuff doesn't seem that great, but he sure has been tthe reliable arm in the pen.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Need Berkman

to get another at bat with a homer and a couple of RBIs. My fantasy team is kinda weak today with none of my pitchers starting today.

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 8:53 PM CDT reply actions

That wouldn't be fair...

to rest of Crawforrd Box League.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure it would

He's the only person getting any decent points for me today. Well, Corey Patterson has gotten 6 points so far. He's been pretty decent overall.

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but the Astros' players

should play favorites among astros' fans. :)

Of course, I'd love to see him get another hit. I would love to see his position in the order come up.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Ah well having so many Astros players

is probably gonna cost me a good score at the end. :p I just got 2.50 points for Brocail, but I think Valverde might come in and cancel those out. :p

by entropic soul on Apr 12, 2008 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Finally home

Looks like the Astros are doing good in my absense... Hopefully me being home to watch the finall innings doesn't hurt them.

Go 'Stros!

He was probably

trying to imitate his bobble head while at bat..

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 12, 2008 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

ha!

Valverde gives up an infield hit....Tejada took the ball too far in the hole.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions

nobody

gets Ramirez when he hits it there... unless the 3rd basemen cuts it off somehow..

Go 'Stros!

Don't

blame this shit on me!

Go 'Stros!

Nice play by Tejada

But no way in hell he gets Ramirez there..

Go 'Stros!

blum got third

out on force out....don't know if he had DP chance if he didn't bobble it.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 9:20 PM CDT reply actions

Don't think he did...

runner on 2nd looked very close to the bag

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 12, 2008 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

He can do whatever he wants...

just so long as he gets out of fthis without damage. At least as far as I'm concerned.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 9:23 PM CDT reply actions

I guess...

ASTROS WIN! YAY!

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Apr 12, 2008 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

He gets swing & miss K

No real dance...just a macho look..

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Hard to believe...

Astros got their first shut out. it didn't feel like a shut out during the game. A lot of messy innings.

by clack on Apr 12, 2008 9:27 PM CDT reply actions

for what it's worth...

cooper said in post-game conference that Valverde has been sick this week and blamed his rustiness on that.
