Things that worry me...
The .275 OBP is the worst in the NL. Not getting hits AND not taking a walk. Not good.
The bullpen that Ed Wade spent the offseason revamping stinks.
That Ed Wade is the GM. Pausing to take a swig of bleach
And things that don't...
Roy Oswalt. Two poor starts do not make me nervous. Over the past 5 years he has been one of the best in baseball
The defense. I am not sure where it came from but I am not going to complain. Two errors in 10 games? Anyone who says they saw that coming I have a polygraph set up for.
Berkman, Lee, and Tejada in the middle of the lineup. These guys will hit. It is just what they do.

I'm speechless, the world's biggest AE fan turning his back on the guy . . .
:-)
PS Adam's travelling on the interstate these days, if you hadn't seen . . . .Highway .095
I'll end up liking Tejada. . . . just give me some time

Good points....
by TBurford. I mean, who wouldn't have things that worry them when the team has the worst record in the NL?
The poor OBP and lack of walks makes me worry that there were some fundamental misconceptions about how to construct an offense. But maybe it's just mostly the Pence effect.
Well, the bullpen was doing well last night...until Villareal came in the game. This is the one member of the bullpen that the Astros committed to for more than one year.
No, Tejada's defense isn't up to AE's standards (but who's is?), but I'm more than satisfied with what Tejada has brought to the table so far. He appears to be average to above average at SS, and hopefully his defense doesn't fall off later in the year if the team's record stinks (like apparently happened in Baltimore).
My only disagreement with TBurford is that I am worried about Roy Oswalt. My guess is that he is injured, even though that is obviously speculation. I have seen Roy's bad streaks in previous years, and they haven't looked like this.

oswalt - injured?
didn't he say he felt a twinge in his right arm during one of the outings? something has to be up. he claims he's not hurt though, and stated in the interview yesterday that he wonders if he's tipping off pitches. it's really mind-blowing.

his stuff
still seems good though... maybe tipping pitches, I don't know... but his fastball is still pretty good and his curveball still seems to be okay as well.

His average fastball velocity...
in 08 is down from the averages in prior years. Perhaps just a beginning of season effect? I don't know, but maybe. See the FB velocities and other data at the bottom of his player page:
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=571&position=P
Interestingly, Oswalt also has thrown fewer fastballs than normal and a lot more sliders than normal in 08. Does it mean that Roy doesn't trust his fastball as much anymore. Again, I don't know.
The most encouraging news I read is that Dewey Robinson and Oswalt were working to correct a flaw in his delivery which they think prevented him from getting enough tilt on his fastball.

Roy's Stats are Crazy
His Ks are up over last season, his BB/9 is AWESOME, any pitcher would kill for his K/BB, but his HR/9 are AWFUL?
So I have this right he is striking out batters, has good placement on his pitches, while not giving up walks, BUT can’t stop the long ball. His BABIP is poor but when balls go over the fence alot that will happen. Either way those numbers do not work out anywhere but baseball and even there they are pretty far from the norm. I can’t make too much sense of them but I AM worried about Roy now.
It's the next generation of Astros. Let's see if they can play like the men they are replacing.

strike outs
The K pattern is odd. He had 6 K’s in his first and last game, but 0 K’s in the Cubs’ game in between. My recollection of the last game is that he had most of his K’s early in the game, and that his stuff looked good early on, but that he looked out of sorts in the 5th inning when he fell apart with 3 homers in the inning…. I haven’t looked back at the game thread for his game against the Marlins, but I think it will show that.
