Houston Astros @ San Diego Padres


Finally, the day we've all been waiting for has finally arrived.  Opening Day is here!!!  I think tonight's game will be a really good game, but in the end... I believe the Astros will come out on top.  Why?  Well, I'll put it as simple as this...  I think the starting pitching match up is pretty much a wash; Oswalt and Peavy are both Cy-Young caliber pitchers and either can be the other on any given day.  Offensively, I think the Astros are a much better team and should be able to do more against Peavy than the Padres will do against Oswalt.  So that's my reasoning.  I know it's simple(maybe too simple), but over complicating it in my opinion isn't needed... so there you go. 

Last year, the Astros opened up their 2007 season at home against the Pirates and we're beaten 2-4 with Roy-O going 7.2 innings and giving up just 2 runs.  This game was the beginning of the end for Brad Lidge who blew his first save of the year in the 9th inning by giving up the game tying run(game was 2-1 Astros at the time) to send the game into extra innings.  Qualls pitched the 10th and gave up 2 runs to earn the loss.  The best offensive player in that game was Luke Scott who went 2-4 with 2 RBI's and a home run.  Luke, you and your Star Wars themed intro music will be missed.

Some Astros Opening Day Stats

  • Astros have played the Dodgers on opening day more times than any other team(11 games).
  • The Astros have never lost (only counting teams they have played) to the Cubs(2 games), Marlins(1 game) or Padres(1 game) on opening day.
  • The Astros have never beaten the Reds(1 game), Braves(1 game), Phillies(3 games) or Cardinals(2 games) on opening day.
  • Astros record on opening day is 22-24.
  • The 2008 opening day will be the 2nd time the Astros have ever started the season in March(last time was 3/31/98 against the Giants)

I'm just excited for real baseball.

I'm going to leave work as early as I can (I'm supposed to get off at 10) and run home to watch.

There were some really fun games this afternoon. I hope the night cap doesn't disappoint.

Oh, and Oswalt needs to do good for one of my fantasy teams. Extra incentive.

Hitting left here, PV throws over to keep Bourn honest at first. PV working Lance away with two straight balls outside... Make that 3 straight balls outside as Bourn takes off, throw high at 2nd by Bard but Bourn's in easy with the steal.

Lee batting with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd. PV playing the same game with Lee, starting him off outside. Misses ball 1. Again aiming outside but it curves back and gets most of the plate. Bard snaps a throw to 1st trying to get Berkman not paying attention, but Berkman is back safe sliding in.

Count 2-2 now, PV throws what looks to be a slider and get's Lee off balance and pops him out to Greene at short.

Runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.

MLB gameday looks nice, but it's way behind(at least a whole batter behind in the live update)

PV trying to nip corners again, misses 3 times sending the count to 3-0 on Tejada. It's 3-0 so he throws a fastball right down the middle. Miggy a little behind, fouls it off to the right. A 2nd straight fastball, Tejada swings under it fouling off to the net behind.

3-2 count, crowd is getting noisy for PV....A 3rd straight fastball, Tejada fouls off.

3-2 again, a 4th straight fastball, pops it behind first base as Gonzalez jogs back and play's it easily.

2 runners on, nothing happening.

and combined with the fact that Gameday (along with the entire astros website) apperantly decided to stop working on my computer, this is a pretty frustrating opening day for me.

By the way, this SBN 2.0 thing is pretty cool, though having to append a vers 2 to my username(because i was beat to plain old mg) isn't.

The game is on ESPN. In the first game tonight on ESPN, Adam Everett hit a foul ball that came wthin a few feet of being a grand slam homerun. Then he popped to left to end the inning. The Twins won anyway.

2-2 count to the big lefty. Roy doesn't look to be too phased by being beaned. Gonzalez watches what looks to be a slider in the dirt to bring it full. Roy challenges him with a heater inside which is fould off. Still full.

Wooooo.. Roy challenging him with fastball after fastball, inside and out. Gonzalez keeping him honest, fouling them off.

Roy comes right down the middle with another fastball.. Too much for Gonzalez who swings through it.

If I didn't have the game on the TV

I'd listen to the game before I'd rely on Gameday. I like radio + box score > Gameday. Gameday just isn't fast enough to be of any use.

They black out games on MLB.tv

when the game is on the local cable channels. Since the game is on ESPN, it isn't online. You should be able to watch the archive... but maybe not until tomorrow. And you can see the game online any time it isn't available in the Dallas area.

I'm in the same boat... but without paying for mlb.tv... yet.

2-2 count, Roy throws another fastball and forces Giles to fly out to Pence in right.. Inning over, but damage done.

Roy's already given up 4 hits and 2 doubles. I think he needs to work in a few more curveballs... he may be a little too aggressive today.

PV seems to be taking a different approach than Roy. Roy is challenging pitch after pitch where PV is trying to hit corners on basically every pitch. Most of his pitches over the plate were pitches that he missed his target on.

Count is 3-2 as Pence flies out to Giles in right.

Doubled last time up, takes a curve for strike 1, then a fstball for strike 2. Another fastball from Roy is fouled off.. 1-2 count. Bet you can't guess the next pitch! Yep.. another fastball, this one inside.. fouled off again. and again..

Roy throws a nice 12-6 curve ball getting Iguchi off balance, popping up to Bourn in CF for out 1.

Another fastball, fouled off and then another fastball that Kouz couldn't handle for strike 3. Not sure what he was looking for... but he should have been looking for a fastball..

1-2 count, fans get a little louder(I'm sure it was for Loretta.. ) now 2-2 after PV misses outside. Loretta steps out for a 2nd and then reaches on an outside pitch, fouling it off to keep the at bat going.

Still 2-2, Bard sets up outside and PV misses over the plate with a fastball, but Loretta misses as well and strikes out. Inning over.

Bourn on 1st, Bourn takes off and EASILY steals 2nd. Earlier I heard someone say that it was mentioned that Bourn was the fastest player in the NL. He's stolen both bases easy today..

I've said it already, but I think Roy is being too aggressive. They basically know what is coming everytime and they are putting the ball in play(and hitting holes).

I wouldn't expect to get anything to hit. Next pitch, breaking ball outside and low, check swing, palms down at 1st.

3-2, fastball low that Tejada drives to center. Field too big as Hairston pulls it in to end the inning.

It was over his head slightly toward right. .

Petco has a deep centerfield. At first the ball looked like a sure double or triple. It looked like the ball would fall 30 or 40 feet past Bourn, but he made up the distance in no time and caught the ball with an outstretched glove.

Wright in making his debut throws strike 1 to Giles. Now 2 straight balls low and one outside for a 3-1 count. Now Wright challenges with a fast ball that Giles fouls off to run it full.

It amazes me how young Wright looks... he could pass for 13.

Count still full... Runners going and Wright gets Giles to ground out to Tejada who fields and gets the out at 1st. Inning over.

Meredith in for the Padres. Meredith is a side arm/submariner, but he doesn't fool Tejada who hits a single to left center, but Tejada gets greedy and goes for 2, but gets thrown out at 2nd. Like the hustle, but not a very smart play when down by 4.

Oswalt said he had no breaking

pitches working this game. He said he had to throw about 85% fastballs, which is why they got so many hits.

My only questioning of Cooper is this: should he allow Oswalt to throw 116 pitches in the first game of the year? No harm if it doesn't affect his next few games. But Oswalt had complained of a "dead arm" at the end of spring training. Hopefully, this pitch count won't make him weaker in the next few starts.

on his hip didn't affect him.
From McTaggert's blog in the HC:

He also said the line drive that Kevin Kouzmanoff hit that glanced off his hip in the first inning had no affect on his pitching.

"I was terrible from the get-go, way before he hit me," he said.

Oswalt said he had a mark on his leg from where the ball hit him, but wasn't about to bellyache about it.

"I don't like when the batters complain when they hit, so..." he said.

Oswalt is spending the rest of the trip staying at the San Diego-area home of Peavy, his close friend. .
