Houston Astros VS Detroit Tigers : Spring Training Game 7

The Astros will take on the Tigers on Tuesday at Osceola County Stadium at 12:05 p.m. CT.

Roy Oswalt will take on Nate Robertson.

The Tigers are sporting an offense like no other this season... hopefully Roy-O can keep them off the board.

Missed the first part of the inning
Pudge led off with a homer

Polanco singled

Guillen grounded out, Polanco to 2nd

Ordonez popped out

Cabrera, cracks his bat and dribbles it out to short, but Tejada bobbled and is charged with an error.  Polanco to 3rd.

Renteria doubles to the gap.  Polanco scores.  Cabrera to 3rd.

Perez works it full, fouling a few off, then singles to right.  Cabrera scores, but Erstad gets Renteria at the plate.

Roy gets roughed up for three, but only one of them earned.  Not sure how many pitches he had to throw, but I'm sure it was a lot.  Hopefully he can rebound.

bottom 1st
Matsui gets ahead in the count 3-0, but eventually flies out to right.

Loretta also ahead in the count 3-1, goes full, bounces one to 3rd and Cabrera gets him.

Tejada also chops to 3rd, and also is thrown out by Cabrera.

1-2-3 in our half.  not what you hope for after your guy has a long top half of the inning.

3-0 Tigers

Top 2nd
Roy gets Clevlen to ground out to Tejada, who doesn't screw this one up.

Guzman lines out to Tejada on the next pitch.  Miguel needs the work.

Roy gets Rodriguez on strikes this time around, and it's a quick 1-2-3 inning, which somewhat makes up for his rough start, and probably allows him to go another.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 4, 2008 12:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

bottom 2nd
Lee chops it weakly up the 3b line.  it stays fair and Cabrera has to charge it, and Lee beats the throw for an infield single.  nice.

Lance goes down swinging, batting from the right side against the lefty.

Blum falls behind quickly 0-2 on two called strikes, swings and misses at the third.

Erstad also gets behind 0-2 (Robertson and Roy both doing better at getting ahead of hitters in the 2nd inning... too bad Roy's first inning results were worse).  and after fouling a couple off, Erstad also goes down swinging.

i'd be pretty psyched about the results so far if i were a Tigers fan.

top 3rd
Roy goes full on Polanco, who then lines a single to right.  he's 2-2 now on Roy.

Roy breaks Guillen's bat, but it splits the wickets on Tejada, and a DP ball turns into runners on the corners and no outs.  i want to stay positive and believe Tejada's just out to a slow start, but this has been an EMBARASSING first few games on his part.

Ordonez picks up a sac fly that should have ended the inning.  4-0 Tigers, three unearned on Tejada errors.

Cabrera bounced to short and this time Tejada is able to turn the double play.

Damage done, though.  Tejada needs to start jacking some dingers or the naysayers are going to come out of the woodwork.

Poor Tejada start
Tejada has been disappointing.

His sloppiness cannot be attributed to rust either since he starred in the Carribean Series and in winter ball. I'm hoping lack of concentration is all it is.

top 4th
Brocail pitching.  Roy's line is 3IP, 4R(1ER), on 5 hits (1 HR), no walks, with 1 K.

Renteria bounces one up the middle, but Tejada is apparently better at the difficult plays and gets Renteria out at first.

Perez singles in front of Cruz.

Clevlen picks up their 7th hit already, singling in front of Lee.  Perez to 2nd.

Guzman singles through the gap on the left side and Perez scores without a throw.  Clevlen to 2nd.  5-1 Tigers.

Brocail gets Rodriguez down on strikes.

Polanco launches one over the head of Cruz in center.  it bounces above the yellow line for a ground rule double.  Clevlen scores.  Guzman has to stay at 3rd.  Polanco now 3-3 on the day.

Guillen grounds out to end it, but not before a couple more runs allowed by our future setup man.  How soon before the early part of spring training is over, and we start wavering in our optimism about this pitching staff?

lotta work to do in this one and closer Todd Jones comes in to get some work.

Tejada grounds to short.  He's now 1 for 13 for the Spring.

Lee draws a walk.

Berkman, batting lefty now, grounds one off the pitcher, beats the throw, and now our two big lumbering sluggers have an infield hit on the day.

Blum follows with a deep double to drive both runners home.  Berkman on his horse, scores from first without a throw.  6-2 now.

Erstad rips one to right.  Blum had to wait for it to drop and holds at 3rd.  Astros bats finally awake.

Cruz now with another RBI opportunity.  He lines one to right, scoring Blum.  Nice job.  6-3 now.

Towles at the plate, subbing in for Ausmus.  He hits a long high fly ball up the left field line.  it's just fair enough and just long enough to be a three-run home run.  Tie ballgame 6-6.  JR now 4-8 with 4 RBI for the Spring.

Matsui misses a bunt attempt, rolls a 1-2 pitch up the middle and is thrown out.

Loretta is the 9th man to bat this inning.  He hits a long fly ball to left, but it's an out up against the wall.

1-2-3 for Valverde; really fast. I was reading the above summary from littlevisigoth and the first 2 outs had already happened, so I have no idea about the first 2, but the last out was on grounder to Wigginton.... on to the bottom!

Really encouraging that we allowed zero walks today, induced a lot of ground ball outs and that the offense was quite alive, getting 17 hits.

thanks for picking up the PBP
i'm good from 12-1, but at some point, i feel guilty that my productivity is in the toilet and actually working takes me away from paying close attention to the game.

by the way, Exit 53 on which road?

not a road at all; exit is a musical project of mine and years ago when i was trying to make my handle on boards just 'exit,' it was always taken.... 53 just kinda got added on...

funny
picking a screen name is annoying.  i chose littlevisigoth, cause my girlfriend called me her little visigoth once (i guess cause i'm a bit of a brutish slob), visigoths being a barbaric tribe of early europeans.  i thought it might be original.  it never occurred to me that people might think i was a little goth kid.  none of the those three words describe me.

oh well, i'm too lazy to pick something else, so i'm littlevisigoth on every board i participate on.

Thanks for telling us...
the origin of your nickname.  Littlevisitgoth always seemed like an intriguing screen name, and I wondered why it was chosen.  I chose "clack" on a whim, because I happened to be thinking about a "click and clack" car talk column when I was asked for a username one time.

by clack on Mar 5, 2008 3:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm Joe in Birmingham . . .
because my name is "Joe" and I live in  Birmin- wait  - I don't live in Birmingham but in the next town over  - I guess I better change my handle - maybe to "Colt .45"

I chose "Joe in Birmingham" as a take-off on the radio call-in shows where callers are identified as  "Bob in Bessemer" or "Pat in Beaumont."

Also the name shows I do not live in Houston. I've learned most posters on TCB live outside Houston so I am not as exotic a creature as I first supposed.

Some good highlights offensively at least
Huge game for Towles.  Another good one for Cruz Jr, but in limited action, Abercrombie and Diaz both had some positives.  Cruz probably has the inside track, but maybe it'll be a close race for the last roster spot.

Erstad also with a good day, and he was the postgame interview.  He had a couple of hits and an OF assist to end the rough 1st inning.  Loretta drove in a run and Blum drove in two, with a double.  Maybe our bench won't be so bad afterall.

Roy had a pretty forgettable start, but the errors really hurt, making him have to work more in the 1st and 3rd innings than he should have.

Valverde really was the only Astros pitcher with a decent showing.  Borkowski actually wasn't too bad, going two innings with 2 K's and 4 groundball outs, but did yield a couple hits and a run.

Guess this might be the kind of game (11-10) we'll have to get used to.  Hopefully Tejada's defense won't actually be this bad throughout the season.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 4, 2008 3:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

actually
looking at the ST stats to date, i see Diaz is still looking for his first hit, sitting 0-8 with 5 K's, although he did get a walk and a SB today.

Abercrombie is now 3-11, with 2 BB, 2 SB, and 2 RBI.

Cruz is now 5-15, with 1 BB, 1 SB, and 3 RBI.

Ramirez is also looking for his first hit, sitting at 0-6 with 1 K, although he's been flashing some defense when in the field.  I don't think anybody really believes he's in the running for a roster spot anyway.  Hopefully he'll develop his offense at RR this year.  I'm sure he'll stick around major league ST for a while though, just for the experience.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 4, 2008 3:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Reserve outfielder competition
With Erstad assured a job, I assume one more reserve outfielder makes the roster.  Cruz has an advantage, in name and reputation, probably.  Abercrombie has done some good things, and he is out of options.  So maybe he has the advantage.  However, I think Nick Gorneault is a darkhorse possibility, based on what he has done.  He has gone 4 for 7 in hits, and scored 5 runs with 2 RBIs. Plus he has run the bases very well, broken up double plays, and made a good defensive play in the OF.  He also has a good accurate arm; in short, he seems to do a lot of things well.  I like Diaz, and, hopefully, the walk today means that he will settle down and start hitting.  It seemed to me like Diaz was swinging too much to try and impress, and lost his plate discipline in earlier games.

another lefty bites the dust
Well, following dismal outings by McLemore & Randolph, and a 2-walk inning from Wright yesterday, Muecke got bombed today.  Those are the 4 lefty reliever candidates.  It's not looking good in that respect.

Responding to comments on this topic yesterday, I don't seriously believe Wade & Cooper will go with an all-RHP pen.  When Howard, Dunn, Delgado, et al. come up in late innings with the game on the line, you don't need a lefty in the pen?  Nonsense.  Take a look at the other 25 teams' rosters on Opening Day & see if there's anyone else with zero lefties in the pen.  My bet is no.  And the Astros shouldn't do that, either.

I doubt it..
Hell, he had a 4.13 ERA vs lefties and a 5.63 ERA vs righties last season... not exactly something to be envious of.

The 4.13 ERA vs lefties isn't terrible, but not exactly in the "specialist" category.

Go 'Stros!

by Stros Bro on Mar 4, 2008 10:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

A lefty/righty split...
based on ERA isn't very meaningful for a specialist reliever.  (I'm not even sure how it would be calculated...is it based on allowing a LHH to drive in a run or on allowing a LHH on base who eventually scores?)  Trevor Miller had a 1.18 WHIP with .209 BA against LHH and a 1.76 WHIP and .289 BA against RHH.   Those are good numbers against LHB and I doubt the Astros have a RHP who can do that to a LHB.

by clack on Mar 5, 2008 7:29 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i don't know
cooper said a couple days ago that if it came down to it, he would take the BEST pitchers - regardless if they were all righties or what. i totally agree with you that yeah, we really SHOULD have a lefty - but i have to agree with Stros Bro - i'd rather have  a good righty than any of our lefties. just please god no stephen randolph. please.
