Houston Astros VS Toronto Blue Jays : Spring Training Game 30

Your Houston Astros play their final game of the "Grapefruit League" season today at 12:05PM CST, sending Brandon Backe to the hill against Dustin McGowan of the Blue Birds.  After today the Astros head home to play 2 exhibition games against the Detroit Tigers at Minute Maid Park before they head off to San Diego and open the season against the Padres on Monday.

I know I'm sounding like a broken record here, but boy can the Astros score some runs.  We scored 6 more runs yesterday against the Indians, but unfortunately, the Indians scored more.  Roy had his 2nd straight outing in which he gave up 4 runs or more, but today, only 1 was earned as his defense(and that of his team) let him down causing 4 of his 5 runs scored against to be considered unearned.  Roy only made it through 3 2/3 innings today before he gave the ball to Wright, who finished up the 4th and completed the 5th innings without giving up a run.

Cruz and Pence had good days with Cruz going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's and Pence 3 for 3; but failing to score or drive anyone in.  Cooper will be sending his 25 man roster to the comish before Mondays game against the Padres and I can't imagine it not including Cruz on it.  The roster currently sits at 30 with Cooper sending Cassel to Round Rock and Hernandez to minor league camp on Wednesday.

With Cassel being gone, the 5th starter spot is down to either Woody Williams or Chris Sampson, with neither really doing a whole lot to prove that they should have the job(Cassel was probably the best of the 3), but Cooper is going with one of them and should have a decision sometime before Monday's game.

Astros didn't score...

in the first. Pence was caught stealing, and that proved costly, since Erstad doubled behind him.

Backe starts off with 2 outs, but then gives up a hit and walk and now trying to get out of the inning. Frank Thomas strikes out.

0-0 after 1.

0-0 after 2 innings

Backe pitching well so far. However, he had to work himself out of jams in both innings. Quintero committed an error in the 2d, putting a runner at 3d base., and broadcasters point out that Astros are committing errors by the "bushel."

As Backe pitches to Eckstein...

I recall one of those dugout microphones last year picking up Backe telling a teammate: "That guy, Eckstein, is such a pest."

Backe gets an out on the pest by the way.

Wigginton bobbles the ball...

for his 9th error. 37 spring training errors for the Astros.

0-0 after 3 innings.

Backe induces a DP to short to erase the effect of Wiggy's error.

Blue Jay's McGowan...

walks the bases loaded with 2 outs, but gets out of it with a K of Newhan.

Astros get out of the 4th....

without a run, with a good throw out of the Jays' runner at the plate. At best I can tell, Cruz threw to Perez, playing short, who make a good strike to the plate.

0-0 after 4.

In the 5th....

Jays take a 1-0 lead. A couple of doubles, I think. Other than that, Backe is pitching well. Announcers point out that Backe is showing a lot of competitive fire, even though this is just a warm up game.

Backe Strong until the 6th

Then he got smoked for 5 earned runs.

Astros lose 8-3, Erstad and Loretta both 2 for 2, but the Astros only had 5 hits ont he day. Bourn, Pence and Wigginton were the only 3 Astros starters to play this game.

Sorry, I had to quit...

my posts after the 5th inning. Backe had been pitching well, but had a melt down in the 6th. Perhaps he was gassed after 5 innings. Villareal also had a bad day, with 1 IP and 3 H, 2R. This is a bit concerning, because Villareal hasn't looked good in several recent games. Valverde and Moehler looked good in relief. Cruz with a RBI and Loretta with a 2 run HR. The Astros continued their porous defense with 3 more errors. Rotoworld, commenting on Wigginton's poor spring, said that the Astros may be tied with the Marlins for the worst left side infield defense in the major leagues. Rotoworld suggested that the Astros consider Loretta at 3d base. Wigginton, by the way, is hitting .200 after going 0 for 3 today. Bourne is hitting .234 after going 0 for 3.

Like..

Loretta's defense is that great.

I don't expect Wigginton to be a .200 hitter or an error every other game type of guy once the season starts... It would be best just to let this play out for a few weeks before even thinking about moving anyone around IMO.
