ST today vs. Marlins (3/24)

Didn't see a main page post, so figured I'd try this FanPost thing out.

Bit of a JV lineup on this roadtrip.  I'll post the lineups in the comments.

already 4-0

in the top of the 1st. RBI doubles from Wiggy, Blum, and Cruz, after Loretta and Erstad singled.

one out.

Newhan grounds

to the pitcher, Cruz holds at 2nd

Towles goes full, then draws the walk, and we'll at least bat around in this first inning.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:20 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Chacon strikes out

but four runs on five hits, with the pitcher batting before he even takes the mound. Like to see that. Not sure what the story on this Volstad guy is, whether he's somebody that is expected to make the roster or not, but with opening day less than 24 hours away (total BS that's an entire other rant), you'd have to expect that results are no longer poo pooed as being meaningless ST stats.

BTW, 1 RBI for Wiggy, two for Blum, one for Cruz.

Bottom 1st

Ramirez on with an infield single off the boot of Chacon.

Uggla loops one out to right. Erstad dives for it, but can't get to it. Newhan going out, trips over Erstad and the ball ends up in somebody's hat. Somebody finally gathers and throws in, and fortunately Uggla stays at 1st and Ramirez is only at 3rd. Wonder if that looked as silly as it sounds.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:28 PM CDT   0 recs

McPherson singles

through the right side. Ramirez scores. nothing hit hard yet, but three up, none out regardless.

4-1 Astros, 1st and 2nd, no outs.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:30 PM CDT   0 recs

Willingham singles

to left, but Cruz comes on and Uggla can't score. Bases loaded for Jacobs.

Jacobs also singles on a liner past Wiggy (i think). One run scores and the play at 3rd on McPherson is not in time.

4-2 Astros, bases still loaded, STILL NO OUTS.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Gonzalez

making Chacon work, not sure what his pitch count is already up to. Broken bat blooper to right, but Erstad is able to get to it. McPherson tags, but doesn't go.

Big stud aquisition from Detrot, Cameron Maybin, up. He grounds up the middle and Blum bobbles it, but Newhan is able to recover and get the force at 2nd. Hard hit, but could have been a DP. Run scores, two outs.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Treanor up

he grounds into a FC to Blum.

4-3 Astros.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Top 2nd

Bourn lays down a bunt, but is out by a hair on a great throw by Treanor.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:45 PM CDT   0 recs

Loretta

gets on, but wasn't really paying attention.

Erstad doubles up the line in right, Gonzalez muffs it, which allows Loretta to score and Erstad to get around to 3rd.

5-3 Astros

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Wiggy

grounds to the left side. Ramirez bobbles on a bad hop and his throw is not in time for the speedy Wigginton (sarcasm). Erstad scores and they comment on how crappy this field is in Jupiter. 2nd unearned run of the inning.

6-3 Astros.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Blum

works a full count, Wiggy running on the pitch and Blum singles to right center over a leaping Uggla, and Ty is able to come all the way around to score.

7-3 Astros, still only one out in this inning.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Cruz

grounds into the hole on the right side, but Uggla is able to corral and get Cheito at 1st. Blum moves to 2nd. Two outs.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 12:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Newhan

lines one to center, but Maybin is able to chase it down.

almost an hour in and we're just moving to the bottom of the 2nd. i probably won't keep up such detailed PBP for much longer.

7-3 good guys.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice job

Jeez think you missed you calling....I'd rather read this than lister to those buffons on the radio...
thanks

Bottom2nd

Volstad pinch hit for after throwing 60+ pitches in two innings, and the radio guys are commenting that maybe he needs a little more seasoning in the minors, not quite as sarcastically as maybe i'm sounding.

missed who the pinch hitter was, but Chacon gets a 1-2-3 second inning on three ground ball outs. maybe we was thrown off by having to swing a bat before pitching his first inning.

still 7-3 Astros.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:03 PM CDT   0 recs

chacon

Not a good first inning, which is worrisome. The Astros are down to basically zero margin for error on starting pitching. If Chacon regularly puts in Woody-like performances, there's only Sampson (whose durability is questionable, to say the least, after a problem-plagued late '07) and Cassel (who I suspect will fall into the OK-for-AAA, not a big leaguer) category.

I think 1 reason they keep nudging Sampson toward the bullpen is concern about how long he could hold up as a starter. But If Chacon bombs, Sampson's pretty much it.

by maris61 on Mar 24, 2008 1:10 PM CDT   0 recs

Astros don't have....

strike out pitchers, beyond Wandy and Roy O. Astros starting staff is basically a pitch to contact crew, and the Astros' defense may not be a good match for the pitchers this year. In this game, Chacon hasn't pitched poorly, in the sense of hard hit balls, but the defense hasn't been good and some plays were flukey. For instance, Blum bobbled a DP ball which allowed a run to score. Hopefully the bad condition of the spring training fields has something to do with the Astros' defense...but I can't say with certainty that is true.

by clack on Mar 24, 2008 2:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You have to consider...

that Paulino and Nieve should be ready sometime in May.

by TexSkins on Mar 24, 2008 4:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

For Paulino...

probably more like June/July. Paulino said he thinks 3 months. He might start throwing in May. We'll just have to wait and see on Nieve.

by clack on Mar 24, 2008 5:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Top 3rd

Towles goes down on strikes. Waechter on the mound now.

Chacon lines to center and Maybin traps it. Chacon foolishly tries to go for two and is gunned down at 2nd.

Bourn grouns out and this Waechter guy has a bit more success than his predecessor.

still 7-3 Astros

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:10 PM CDT   0 recs

Bottom 3rd

McPherson reaches on an E4.

Willingham flies out.

Jacobs draws a walk. Two on for Luis Gonzales.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:16 PM CDT   0 recs

Gonzalez doubles

over Erstad's head. Both runners score. Play at the plate on Jacobs was close, but he managed to slide under the tag.

of the things I've seen Towles do well, plays at home plate is not one of them, although i'm not drawing on a lot of examples. i just remember a play over the weekend that i thought he could have made, and now this one that may have been on him.

Maybin strikes out.

Treanor bloops to center and Gonzalez scores.

7-6 now.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Waechter

goes down swinging on three pitches to end the inning.

certainly not a very encouraging outing by Chacon.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Top 4th

Loretta singles, but is erased on Erstad's GIDP.

Wiggington flies out to center, and it's another quick inning for Waechter.

still 7-6 Astros

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:30 PM CDT   0 recs

Bottom 5th

not sure if it was Chacon, but it was a quick uneventful inning.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:39 PM CDT   0 recs

Top 5th

Perez, who had checked in defensively in the 3rd, homers down the line.

Cruz follows on the next pitch to make it back to back.

Not sure if it's still Waechter, but it's 9-6 now.

Three quick ground outs end it. Chacon was the last one, so I guess he's still pitching.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:41 PM CDT   0 recs

Bottom 5th

Chacon still pitching

Willingham gets on somehow. missed it and the "live" box score is so slow, i can never check back in the same inning.

Jacobs goes down looking and some words exchanged with the ump.

De Aza, who had run for Gonzalez in the 3rd, grounds into a fielders choice and Willingham is erased at 2nd.

Maybin follows with a ground out, and at times this game Chacon has seemed in control and gets the ground balls he's supposed to, but some bloop hits and some fielding miscues have cost him

still 9-6 Astros

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 1:54 PM CDT   0 recs

Top 6th

and my attention waning a bit.

Bourn retired, now 0-4 on the day.

Loretta reached on a error.

Erstad and Wigginton leave him stranded and we're on to the botttom of the 6th, still 9-6 good guys.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 2:02 PM CDT   0 recs

Bottom 6th

Saccomano in at 3rd. Abercrombie in at RF, Erstad moving to 1st. Q in to catch. Moehler in to pitch.

Moehler hits his first batter, which was Treanor.

Gomez batting pinch hitting for the pitcher (not sure which pitcher), and Q with his signature snap throw almost gets Treanor at 1st. Gomez laces one to the wall in right center and legs it out into a triple, scoring Treanor from 1st.

Ramirez grounds out, but scores Gomez from 3rd.

Uggla flies out to Abercrombie in right.

McPherson grounds out to end it.

9-8 now, with two runs on one hit.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 2:10 PM CDT   0 recs

Top 7th

Gardner in to pitch for the Marlins.

Had to take a call, but come back in to the broadcast to hear it was a quick 1-2-3 inning, all outs going to the shortstop in combination of grounders and popups.

Astros still clinging to a 9-8 lead.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 2:18 PM CDT   0 recs

Bottom 7th

Moehler still in. he strands a 1-out triple to preserve the narrow lead.

two innings, one triple the only hit in each inning, but two runs in one and none in the next.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 2:24 PM CDT   0 recs

Top 8th

Q, Bourn, and Abercrombie go down in order. Sounded like Abercrombie got robbed of a hit by a diving catch.

Still 9-8 Astros.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 2:31 PM CDT   0 recs

Bottom 8th

Borkowski in to pitch

He gets Treanor on strikes. In the meantime, they mention that Volstad is one of the Marlins' top pitching prospects, but that maybe he'll start the season in AAA.

Lambin flies out (i think)

Amezega grounds into the hole on the right side, but Newhan makes a nice diving stop and gets the out at 1st.

Nice quick 1-2-3 inning for Borkowski.

Still 9-8 Astros going to the 9th.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 2:36 PM CDT   0 recs

Top 9th

Closer Kevin Gregg comes in to pitch

Saccomano bloops a base hit.

Erstad lines to left for a solid base hit. i believe Saccomano holds at 2nd.

Johnny Ash (not sure if he's pinch hitting for Borkowski, or if he was already in on a double switch) squirts one up the right field line, scoring Saccomano from 2nd. Erstad stops at 2nd.

Perez puts down a bunt and moves both runners over.

Cruz goes down swinging.

Newhan flies out to center to end it (coulda used that from Cheito).

Astros go up 10-8 in what has become a minor league game. Astros are on one of their longer road trips, so most of their big names never made the trip.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 2:48 PM CDT   0 recs

Bottom 9th

and Wesley Wright is in to pitch.

Lambin leads off with a bloop single up the right field line.

Baker finds a hole on the right side and it's two on, no outs.

Cantu singles up the middle and scores Lambin. Wright fell behind 3-0 and had to come at him. Needs to make some pitches now to wriggle out of this one with the win.

Jacobs (lefty) at the plate. Wright falls behind 3-0 again. Jacobs laces a base hit to center, but Bourn covers quickly and the runner is not sent. Bases loaded, no outs, tying run at 3rd.

Wright gets ahead of De Aza 0-2, just misses a called strike three, 1-2, misses again with a breaking ball, 2-2, misses again with a fastball, 3-2, foul, and De Aza lifts a long fly ball to left, and Cruz playing in just does get back to make the catch, but the run scores.

10-10, one out, two on.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 3:02 PM CDT   0 recs

Maybin up

Wright gets him swinging, both bullpens active, so it looks like we'll get a 10th if Wright can get one more out.

Then Wright walks Hoover, pinch hitting for Gregg, to load 'em back up.

Gomez (another lefty) at the plate, and Wright gets ahead 0-2. Misses three times to fill it up, then gets the (bases loaded, tie game, bottom of the 9th, full count) called strike three.

Guess it's kinda nice he didn't give up the winning run and got a couple key strike outs, but not the best outing from the young lefty, still hoping for a spot in the rotation.

10-10 tie, going into the top of the 10th.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 3:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Wright seems...

pretty much assured of a spot on the team. Wade said that the team had passed the deadline for starting the process of sending Wright back to LA if they wanted to do that before the final roster is set. So he will be on the roster, barring injury.

by clack on Mar 24, 2008 3:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

hadn't heard that

but i've been a bit distracted by college basketball.

his ERA only climbed to 3.00, and he did strike out a couple batters, so i don't think this probably SHATTERS anybody's confidence in him. he'll probably get at least one more outing before next week. hopefully he can re-establish some momentum.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 3:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Top 10th

Nelson in to pitch.

Q up, grounds to the left side, off of the 3rd baseman's glove (playing the line). the short stop covers, but Q is chugging up the line and there's no play. would have been an easy out if they weren't guarding the line.

Reggies bunts Q over to 2nd. Guess we know how Coop's gonna play these extra inning games when the lead runner is on.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 3:13 PM CDT   0 recs

Bourne up

sporting an O-fer so far. this would be a nice time to break that up. not so, as he flies out to center.

Saccomano goes down swinging, leaving Q at 2nd.

Still 10-10, going to the bottom of the 10th

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 3:17 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bourn's batting average....

is falling like a rock. It was .266 before his last couple of outs. He had an 0-for day yesterday.

by clack on Mar 24, 2008 3:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bottom of 10th

and this will be it, so we're playing for our first tie of the Spring.

Jared something or other in to pitch, must be a minor leaguer they brought along. Gothreaux, as they finally spell it for me. missed the first batter trying to look it up for myself.

He walks Lambin and Baker and now it's two on, one out for Cantu.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 3:25 PM CDT   0 recs

Cantu

bounces into a double play, and IT'S A TIE!

10-10.

by littlevisigoth on Mar 24, 2008 3:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think..

Bourne is going to be a very streaky batter.

by garageinc on Mar 24, 2008 3:25 PM CDT   0 recs

Chacon is the post-game interview

said he felt pretty good. prompted, he commented on the windy conditions maybe affecting the performance.

he's remarkably well-spoken, actually.
