Houston Astros VS Cincinnati Reds : Spring Training Game 25

Your Houston Astros send Brandon Backe to the hill against "rock star" Bronson Arroyo at 12:05PM CST in Kissimmee.

Yesterday the Astros were beat by the Marlins 8-3 behind Roy Oswalt who gave up 4 runs to earn his first loss of the spring training season.

Backe had his best out of the spring training season last time out against the Reds when he went 4 innings giving up a hit and a walk while striking out 2.  Backe seems to have the #2 spot in the rotation down... hopefully he deserves it.

Astros hold an 11 and 13 record so far and have less than 2 weeks before REAL MEANINGFUL BASEBALL will be played!

Astros down 3-0...
in the 3d inning.  Backe has allowed 3 runs on 3 hits but none earned.  Berkman and Blum with errors. And Tejeda misplayed a ball which didn't go down as an error.  Arroyo hasn't allowed an Astros baserunner yet.

3-2 now....
Bourne and Berkman with RBIs.  Towles and Newhan score the runs.

Make it 3-3....
Bourne scores a run too.  It's unearned for Arroyo..he has 2 errors behind him too.

3-3 after 4 innings....
Backe with a scoreless, hitless 4th inning.  Backe and Arroyo have very similar lines so far, and as noted previously both have gotten poor support from their infield defense.  Backe has a 2.77 ERA and Arroyo a 2.70 ERA so far.  I hope Backe can pitch one or two more innings without raising that ERA.

No one has mentioned it yet...
but it appears that Ensberg has made the Yankees team. Since the Yanks added him to their 40 man and guaranteed his salary, it is likely that he will be on the Yanks' bench.

4-3 Reds now...
entering the 6th.  Looking at the boxscore, it appears that Griffey got an RBI double off Backe.

correction: 4-4 tie....
entering the 6th inning. Tejada with a RBI single in the 5th.

according to the boxscore
Wright had a scoreless inning in the 6h.  I hope that is correct...but sometimes the boxscore "corrects" itself later, as it did with the Tejada RBI.

Wright's ERA stands at...
1.13.  Maybe Milo's right about Wright: the Astros have to keep Wright on the roster.  I mention that, because in a previous spring game, Milo was going on and on about Wright when Drayton was in the booth, as if he was trying to persuade McLane to make the executive decision right then and there. :)

It was correct
He looked really good, IMHO.

Many people are saying
that he's making the team... I hope so.. something about having a guy who looks 13 on the team intrigues me.
Go 'Stros!

Yeah,
J.D. and Brownie said an ump at one of the ST ballparks mistook him for a batboy.

Final: Astros Win 6-5
Reds had taken a 5-4 lead in the 7th with a run off of Valverde.  But Tejada and Blum came through with RBIs in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead.  Valverde pitched a scoreless 8th and Villareal pitched a scoreless 9th.
