More cuts

there are eight fewer guys on the roster now.

for those keeping score, that's 35 total now:

18 Pitchers (2 NRI), only one lefty candidate for the bullpen left

3 Catchers (0 NRI)

8 IF (2 NRI... I'm including Newhan here)

6 OF (1 NRI)

Star-divide

so if they carry 12 pitchers, that's 6 that still have to go, and 4 position players that need to go.

we're down to Cruz and Abercrombie for the 5th OF.  Gorneault didn't seem to get as much of a chance for some reason.  His numbers were certainly good, but a lot of it coming at the end of games.

Newhan and Perez are probably hanging around until they decide what to do with Matsui's vacated spot and whether or not they're going to deal Loretta (which I continue to read rumblings about).

it'll all play out in the next week.  Coop apparently will be managing games more like regular season games now, stretching pitchers out more, playing regulars deeper into games, using switches situationally.  i think it's safe to say that some of the "results don't matter" talk begins to fall to the wayside.

He has an ERA ....
below 2 right now.  I wouldn't call that winning by default. I think Wright's performance helped make the decision to outright McLemore easier.

Nothing surprising....
I thought maybe they would look at Hines some more; he has pitched well and has pretty good stuff.  Gorneault hadn't been getting a lot of at bats lately, so the writing seemed on the wall for him.  But Gorneault can't tell himself that he did anything to cost himself the job.  He did everything he could do when given the opportunity.  He is a little older than Abercrombie, but I like what Gorneault brings to the table.  Hopefully he will perform well at Round Rock and be an option if injuries force a call up.

I like Cecil Cooper's straight forward approach in talking about these players.  He avoids being overly negative, but he also is frank about the players' weaknesses.  I hope the players appreciate that style.  I think I would.

Tonight's game
Team looking good in tonight's game so far. Eighth inning leading 7-2. One of those runs we gave up was unearned so only one earned run by the pitching staff so far (Chacon, Valverda, Villareal)
