Vacation

Hey everyone, sorry for the late notice, but I'm leaving this morning and going to San Antonio until Thursday.  I will have limited (at best) internet for those days.

I check out...
vivaelbirdos.com (the equivalent Cardinals site) every so often, and I noticed that they have the new SBNations format in place.
http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/

An article down the page (welcome to new vivaelbirdos...if I recall) talks about the changes.  Apparently the new format will allows us all to make postings on other SBNations baseball web sites.

Today's game
another rough outing for Woody.  6 R (5 ER) on 9 hits in 4.0 IP, with 1 HR, 1 K, and 2 BB.  that does LOWER his ERA to 13.89, but i'm sure it doesn't do anything to Coop's concerns about whether he's one of the top 5 candidates for the starting rotation.  he should get at least two more appearances before the season starts.  if he doesn't turn a corner in a big way, i sure hope Coop can do the right thing and give somebody else his spot in the rotation.

nice games offensively from a few guys.  Bourn knocks his 2nd home run of the Spring.  so did Pence.  Newhan and House, who had a real nice day, also went deep.  Abercrombie went 2-3, driving in a run and scoring two himself, and getting on again with a walk, stealing three bases in the process.  i really hope he can come on strong and make a bid for the last OF spot.  he's got some power potential, but definitely the speed and defense that we don't currently have on the bench.

Geary and Houston both had positive appearances in relief of Woody.  Geary was the radio guys' player of the game.  Paronto got knocked around a bit and Randolph had some control problems (again).

Another high scoring affair.  Astros pull it off though, 10-9.

Make the score 12-10
and I'll agree with this report.

I posted one below that I was drafting when littlevisigoth posted his.

sorry
i was tuning in and out at work and it was 10-9 going into the 9th.  i didn't think i had missed any scoring, and the "live" box score wasn't refreshing the last inning fast enough.  guess i missed quite a bit in the 9th.  most of my report was off the box score.

Astros beat Dodgers 12-10 Monday afternoon
I caught ony the last half inning on MLB.com. Dodgers scored one and left the bases loaded to end the game. Carlos Hines, pitching, was wild. To Hines' credit he allowed only one run after entering the game with two men on and no outs. The Astros shortstop (Maysonet?) missed a relatively easy grouder that was called a hit but looked like an error to me to allow the run to score.

Statistically, Woody Williams gave up 9 hits (one homerun) and 6 runs in 4 innings to stay on par with his 13.89 ERA. I don't think Woody Williams will make the opening day roster. Astros pitchers Geary (2 innings) and Houston (1 inning) had good outings.

If I heard correctly this was the last Dodgers game ever at Vero Beach  (or maybe the last Astros game ever against the Dodgers at Vero Beach - Dodgers are relocating)

Berkman and Lee did not play. Tejada continued his poor spring at the plate (striking out twice in 3 at bats). Multiple hit game by House,  Abercrombie, and Perez. Five Astros hit homeruns.

Woody...
said his outing was "pretty good" and that he made some good pitches.  Cooper agreed that he made som good pitches but he wasn't satisfied with the outing and says he wants to see more from Woody.  Williams was hurt by some bad defense, which kept him from getting out of the two run scoring innings, but Cooper said that pitchers have to show that they can pick up their fielders.

What was your reaction to Woody's self-appraisal?
Is he blowing smoke? or was he honest AND correct about being "pretty good"?

I can't tell if....
Woody Williams is in denial about his pitching or if he is just trying to put on a "think positive" front.  Cooper was more critical of Woody's performance.  Coop seems like the type to be fairly direct in his comments, and he says Woody will have to perform better in order to win a rotation spot.

Bourn, Quintero...
I can't emphasize enough how pleased I am with the performance of Bourn so far this spring.  While the Matsui signing may prove to be a regrettable one, the trade for Bourn may prove to be the best of them all.  If he can continue to hit near the clip he is on (and with the occasional HR too), people will be saying "Willy who?" a few weeks into the season.

I for one am getting pretty excited.  Here's what I see as the opening day lineup:
Bourn
Pence
Berkman
Lee
Tejada
Wigginton
Towles/Quintero (more on this)
Loretta/Blum
Pitcher

This is definitely an improvement over last years lineup and if spring ball is any indication, we should be scoring a few more runs this season.

I actually think the 'Stros should send Towles down to AAA for a little bit longer and see if we can get anything for Quintero.  Seeing as Towles has been injured most of spring and Quintero has been tearing it up, I say give him a chance and let him start opening day.  If he has actually turned a corner offensively, let him play.  It doesn't hurt to have an abundance of talent at a position.  We can deal Quintero if he keeps up at this pace for a decent prospect and/or major-leaguer.

Quintero/Abercrombie
Unless Towles starts the season hurt, I highly doubt there is a chance he will get the starting day nod. However, I have heard that Coop is considering carrying 3 catchers due to what Quintero has shown this spring.

Regarding keeping Abercrombie...I agree his speed would be great off the bench, but frankly I think we need more pop than speed. Erstad has good defense off the bench, but there isn't any Lamb-like pop off the bench, which is why I have a feeling Cruz will make the team. Abercrombie is not very consistent as it is, and using him in a bench role will most likely just hinder his consistency.

Bourn, Quintero, Matsui
Bourn has been an eye-opener. He's exciting. I saw part of one game on MLB.com where Bourn stole third. I could not believe how fast he got there. And he hits, too?

I read somewhere Astros might keep Quintero on the opening day roster and send him down too AAA a  few games later because, with most teams set on opening day, Quintero was more likely to pass through waivers unclaimed after opening day.

I wonder if anyone had a pool on how many games  Matsui would play before he went on the DL.  The winning number would have been 0 games.

i thought they
didn't anticipate having to put Matsui on the DL to start the season?  i thought the prognosis had him back in time for the season opener, even if he had to start on the bench?

oops
i'm a little slow on the uptake these days for some reason.  had a crazy week in the office last week, so maybe that's thrown me off.

here's the link on the official site about Matsui probably starting the season on the DL.
