This is a pretty interesting article...
about how much money can be saved by "homegrown" talent, which is to say talent that comes from the farm system. Check out the article and let me know what you think.
The most damning part was the part about the draft and slot money.
The next step deals directly with the draft: ignoring the slotting recommendations designed by MLB to keep a lid on signing bonuses for early-round draft picks. Some teams, such as the Houston Astros, heed MLB's scale - and now they have perhaps the worst farm system in baseball. The formula they use for assigning a monetary value for talent is pretty interesting.
Anyway, just thought I'd post it.

Though I doubt he'll sell...
I found this site which said the following:
And it is now worth $416 million, at least according to this Forbes valuation. (For the record: it does say on Forbes that the team was purchased for $103 million, so maybe the 'Dome lease was the other $12 million. That is my best guess right now.) It doesn't have a year, but I think it was done at some point during last season since it talks about the World Series being "last year" and there's a big picture of Gar. (The homepage of the article says 4-17-07. Also, using the homepage, the Astros are 11th, not 10th, behind the Nats. It also has a new figure of $442 million, which also has its own link.)
So, for all of use mathletes, that is a profit of... carry the one... $301 million or $313 million -OR- $339 million or $327 million (depending on the accuracy of the given figures). In any case, it is $300+ million. That's about $299.999 million more than I can even dream about.
The $416 million was good for 10th on the list, with the Yanks (I mean, really... who couldn't guess that?) first, followed by:
- Mets
- Sawx
- Dodgers
- Cubs
- Cards
- Giants
- Braves
- Phillies
You think if we wrote him a letter with all of these figures, he'd be so happy he'd sell the team? I bet he could get $500+ million for it. That's a lot for this man to turn down.
