Cubs sign Aaron Miles...how will that affect the NL Central?
so there goes another utility infield candidate. I think Quail and I both pointed to MIles as one of the better choices from a fairly weak field of free agent utility infielders.
Reportedly this signing was made in order to allow the Cubs to trade DeRosa to the Indians for multiple young pitchers. If that is true, combined with the trade of Marquis to the Rockies, the Cubs appear to be positioning themselves for another run at Peavy. The Cubs also are rumored to pick up Milton Bradley for their outfield. That isn't a bad choice, if it happens, but it is a tad risky. One wonders if we will see some kind of blow up in the dugout between Piniella and Bradley. Dugout fisticuffs are known to happen in Cubbie land.
You can head on down to MLBTR if you want to see the source of some of these tidbits.
As for the Astros' search for a utility infielder...how about Craig Counsell? Is he a cinch to re-sign with the Brewers or something? (Maybe Ol' Pete will give us some insight.) Counsell is a good defensive player, puts up a good OBP, though with little power. He seems like a nice Loretta-like player. (OK, maybe better defensively than Loretta, but not as consistent offensively...however, you get the idea.) A recent article at beyond the boxscore looked at the weak crop of FA utility infielders and concluded that Counsell is probably the best.

a guess
DM the GM has made comments about tightening up the payroll and one place he mentioned specifically was the bench. Rather than having a lot of veterans, he said something along the lines of he would have to go with some young guys. This is a WAG, but I think they’d like Counsell back but he made 3.5 million or something like that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they offered him 1.5 or something and he is waiting around to see what offers he gets. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him as a coach for the Brewers in 3, 4 or 5 years. I can remember him telling Yost that he might want to use a pinch runner when some lug was on base in a late inning and September call up speedster Escobar on the bench.
Side note: man I’m glad Yost is gone.
He doesn’t hit for a high average but he can play very good defense at 3rd, SS and 2nd. I’m not sure his stat line in late and close will reflect it, but he at least has that clutch reputation. There were lots of semi-jokes about him batting with bases loaded with some of his career dramatics and I vaguely remember him walking in a run.
Here is a play I really liked and what you want when people use one of the variations of the phrase veteran-ness.

the cubs
A bradley vs. sweet lou dugout fight is a lock for the 2009 season. As if there isnt a billion reason to hate the cubs, I am already starting to feel sorry for Jeff Samardjiza. Of all the teams he could play for, he plays for the one who will be willing to blow out his arm from overwork before hes ready. After Prior and Wood, the cubs still wonder why they suck?
