Big Unit inks with Giants for $8 million...Astros miss out on another
There about $4 million in incentives which could be vested for for performance marks.
The press release also has this gem:
"Adding Johnson to the Giants rotation now gives the club three Cy Young Award winners, including last season's winner Tim Lincecum and 2002 AL winner Barry Zito. The last team to have three Cy Young winners on the same roster was the 2002 Atlanta Braves with Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz."
Some how, I don't think counting Zito and Johnson as still being Cy-Young caliber counts. Either way, the Astros missed out on yet another solid innings eater that would have provided a ton value for relatively cheap...**sigh**

A lot of teams were chasing after him
The team I don’t get is the Dbacks who it was rumored he was willing to give a big discount to. I think they offered him 3 million or something absurd.
But I have an idea for the Giants: sign Eric Gagne and get another Cy Young winner.
HAHAHA
They could just collect has been Cy-Young winners.
The Crawfishboxes
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

D-Backs are in really bad financial situation.
They have laid off a bunch of employees and apparently have some debt issues. They apparently can’t afford any contracts higher than a couple of million.
Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Zito, Johnson
That’s a very good rotation from 1-to-5. Plus they have Noah Lowry if the Unit’s 45-year-old arm dies during the season or if Zito explodes again (I have a funny feeling he might actually do something next year.)
But their offence still looks horrible, so I suppose things don’t matter so much.
I think the Giants are still looking to sign a "big bat."
They were interested in Manny Ramirez at one time. Adam Dunn might be a possibiliy there. Otherwise, you’re right, without more offense, Giants’ fans will need to get used to lots of 2-1 games.
Big Unit wanted to stay West
nothing we could to about it. Just like Iguchi last year.

Wife
Isn’t one reason Johnson left before that his wife did not like Houston?
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
yes, I heard that.
You never know how true it is, though. My recollection is that his wife supposedly wanted to live near hip areas with arts and craft and non-traditional type shops and businesses . At the time, Houston didn’t have much of that kind of feeling. I recall that some of his Astros’ teammates tried to sell him and his wife on the idea that Austin is nearby.
In the end, I think the money...
was the biggest factor for Johnson. McLane made a relatively low offer to Johnson at the end of the 98 season and said he wouldn’t budge.
Never in the running
Surely no one thought the Unit was coming back. He’s a West Coast guy and primarily California/Phoenix. This signing by SF is primarily about butts in the stands to see the Big One get No. 300; not about winning. He’ll easily earn the Giants $8 mill plus at their beautiful stadium.
