Oswalt is loyal, but wants to win. Whichever trait is stronger in our star pitcher will likely determine whether or not he wants to stay an Astro.

Roy certainly seems to complain a lot

First about the lack of bats and now about the starting pitching. If things go to hell in a handbasket next season and there appears to be no hope for an upturn in ‘10, I can see him waiving his NTC – but I’m just guessing.

He only complains

because there’s so much to complain about!

I can’t see McLane wanting to trade Oswalt, but I can definitely see Oswalt asking to be traded. The Astros probably would try to talk him out of it, but if Oswalt publicly criticizes McLane, he’s out the door.

Ahh, yes… the Billy Wagner Maneuver.

The sad part is that the Astros probably can't get much in return for Oswalt...

in the current state of the market. That may change by mid-season or next season, who knows. But, right now, there appears to be a very limited number of teams willing/able to take on Oswalt, financially. And those teams have free agent choices, like Lowe and Sheets, whom they can turn to for an equivalent financial cost, without giving up top prospects. After trading prospects for Vazquez, the Braves probably aren’t in a position to give up a lot for Oswalt. The Yankees seem to have filled up their rotation, and those Sabbathia and Burnett contracts would limit their interest now. Even the big spending Cubs were limited in their ability to trade for Peavy, because they would have to clear salary space first. I could go on and talk about the other few potential trading partners, but you get the idea.

So, I’m not sure that the Astros are in a position to satisfy a trade demand, even if one was made.

Agreed

Though that all could change quickly. When the Yankees are blindsided by the news that Sabathia has the knees and back of, well, a 300 pound man; and Burnett is down with some sort of unforseeable shoulder problems, they may be in the market for another starter. Like you said though, with all the free agents and Peavy available, it will be tough to get fair value for Roy. I wouldn’t mind trading with the Braves, but they seemed intent on hanging onto Hanson, and there is no way I would trade Roy without him coming back in return.
