Today is my birthday...
…and all I want is the next Johan Santana. Make it happen Ed Wade.
I’ve seen a lot previews of the Rule 5 and it looks like there are plenty of players to go around. My guess is that we grab a LHP that can potentially take Byrdak’s place. My backup guess is that we grab a speedy SS that can serve in a utility/backup function (although the Astros player development people would prefer playing our pickup every day).

Happy Birthday!!

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

good guesses.
I find it interesting that Wade believes it is possible that the Astros might make two rule 5 picks. I can’t recall when the team has done that before.

I think it’d be very interesting, too, clack. Doing so would basically be an admission that we have the worst farm system in baseball, but it’d be a cheap way to create competition in Spring Training. Baseball America says that scouts at the Winter meetings are predicting between 10 and 12 players get picked, which sounds like the draft may not even last past the first round.

They've made their pick!
Astros take another pitcher from the Royals:
Gilbert de la Vera, a AA lefty.

Interesting
I imagine there would be no need to have Wesley, Byrdak, and de la Vera. If I had to guess, Wade might trade Wesley.

Does this foretell a non-tender for Byrdak?
There had been some question, given the Astros’ budget cutting, whether Byrdak would be non-tendered. de la Vera may be a back up plan in case Byrdak doesn’t return?

Byrdak had some great results last year...
…but I’m afraid they’re mostly unrepeatable luck.
His BABIP was .243, about 60 points lower than one would expect. That’ll probably trend back to the norm next year and he won’t have as good of a year.
Seeing as how Byrdak made $712,500 last year, and he’s arbitration eligible, and he had good enough results last year to make the case to an arbitrator that he deserves a raise, my guess is that he gets non-tendered, and the savings from that go to cover Backe’s increase.
At the very least, it gives the Astros what negotiation theorists call an Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement, which is a fancy way of saying they can still try to get Byrdak to sign cheaply, but have an option that allows them to walk away from the table if Byrdak asks for too much.

Also
The Orioles took catcher Lou Palmisano from the Brewers with one of their first picks, and mlbtraderumors is speculating that they will trade him to the Astros.

Baseball America reports that Palmisano was traded to the Astros.
He was in the Brewers organization, so this may be someone Heck knows about. His offensive numbers in AA aren’t bad for a catcher, but he had undergone knee surgery which is why Milwaukee didn’t protect him.
The Astros traded for a AAA LHP (Lumden) from the Royals a couple of weeks ago. It is reported that Astros’ outfielder Jordan Parraz is the PTBNL in that trade. If I recall, Parraz was eligible to be drafted in the Rule 5.

Hmmm
that doesn’t seem like all that good of a deal for the Astros. Jordan Parraz had a pretty good year last season. It seems to me that, unless there’s something (and I’m sure there is) that I don’t know about Parraz, he is a far better prospect than Lumsden.

Parraz
Baseballanalysts.com’s pre-Rule 5 article had this to say about Parraz:
Jordan Parraz is not quite as athletic as Iorg, but he has a better chance of hitting for average. He has moved slowly through the system and was old for High-A but he hit .289/.382/.419 with 21 stolen bases in 425 at-bats. Parraz also has a cannon for an arm and can hit the mid 90s off the mound.
Yeah, I agree that he seems like a better prospect than Lumsden. Maybe the Astros figured Parraz would be picked in the Rule 5 draft anyway, and this was a way for the Royals to acquire him without having to keep him on the ML roster (if he was a Rule 5 pick).

Yeah
My other thought is that our scouts saw something in Lumsden that they truly feel is fixable and that for our pitching starved team, the prospects of breathing new life into a LHP was well worth the gamble—especially given the points you raise.
